“Light the Light” by Tim Baker

Tim Baker is no stranger to holiday songs, and this year he released a whole holiday album, Full Rainbow of Light.

Comprised of twelve new songs, and a cover of the standard “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” Tim expanded on the album, saying: “I started recording this album in Montreal with my great friends & go-to collaborators Marcus Paquin & Liam O’Neill, but it sat sidetracked by other projects for over a year. It took a long east coast winter and half the musicians in St. John’s to help me finally get it there. I guess it makes sense it had to come home, since ‘Town’ is such a central character to it. I was lucky enough to get the likes of Tom Power, Aaron Collis, Emilia Bartellas, Matthew Byrne & Rich Klaas of the townie trad legends The Dardanelles; stars in the their own right Kelly McMichael, Mara Pellerin, Nico Paulo & Maria Peddle singing backups; not to mention social media superstar Billianne backing me up on the title track; Rob Brown on the haunting Uilleann pipes; Peter Lannon lending his lead guitar sweetness; honorary Newfoundlanders Mike Brushey & Jason Haberman grounding everything on bass & drums; my dad sings on it, my friends are all over it, to say it's ‘of my home’ is funny cause so much of it was actually recorded in my literal living room, pausing when the snowplows ground past, or the wind got too loud in the chimneys.”

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”/ “Vous êtes méchant, M.Grinch” by Jill Barber

Hot off her latest, French-language album ENCORE!, Jill Barber celebrated the season with a few covers of Christmas classics. And true to form, each song was recorded both in English and en français!

Below is her sultry version of Dr. Seuss’ “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” — as well as “Vous êtes méchant, M.Grinch” — but you can also hear her takes on “Sleigh Ride”/ Promenade en traîneau” and “I’ll be Home for Christmas”/”C’est la nuit de Noël”

“The Little Drum Machine Boy” by Jane’s Party

This was too funny not to include and I’ll just let Jane’s Party vocalist and guitarist Tom Ionescu tell you about it:

“With this holiday song, I wanted to add to the Christmas lore. One character that stood out to me as needing some extra attention and a revamp was the Little Drummer Boy. I’ve really been getting into old drum machines and exploring ways to include them into the songs we write and produce. With our attention on all this drum machine stuff, I thought maybe the modern re-telling of ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ would be ‘The Little Drum Machine Boy’. The rest of the concept fell into place quite fast!”

“It Can’t Be Christmas” by Johnny 99

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Johnny 99 — the solo project of John Sponarski, who is currently part of City & Colour (or long-time readers of this blog may remember him as one half of Portage & Main).

But now he’s back with a holiday song, “It Can’t Be Christmas”. Backed by his C&C bandmates Matt Kelly, Erik Nielsen, and Leon Power, the tune fits into the “sad Christmas song” genre, with Sponarski explaining, “This song was one of those magical moments you don't have to work for, or coax out of the ether. It leapt from my imagination as soon as I awoke early one morning with the holidays right around the corner. The previous evening I had spoken with a friend who was grappling with the loss of his mother. We talked about his grief, how it weighed on him and took away the joy and comfort he normally felt during the holiday season. It’s really a song for anyone who has experienced loss around Christmas, and how that has changed what it means to them.”

Elliott BROOD did a Christmas parody of Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage”, and I kind of hate how well it works???

“Santa Must Have Winter Tires” by Future Star

You can always count on Mint Records for some local Christmas cheer, and this year it comes from Future Star with “Santa Must Have Winter Tires”.

The bedroom-pop jam was written in about a snowy winter night in 2022, with Future Star dedicating the song to “all the shiftworkers and commuters who gambled on it being a mild winter and lost.”

“The Sound Of Christmas” by William Prince

We got some more original Christmas music from William Prince his his track “The Sound Of Christmas”, as well as “Don’t Go Leaving Me (It’s Christmas Eve)” and a cover of “Silver Bells”.

In “The Sound of Christmas” he “puts an ingenious twist on classic themes, celebrating the role that music and the real-life sounds of Christmas - laughter, clinking of glassware, skates carving ice, bells carrying through the air - play in our memories and festivities.”

“Santa Man” / “Hot Christmas” by The Sheepdogs / BROS

We’ve got a double whammy of Christmas music from the combo of The Sheepdogs, and BROS (Sheepdogs bandmates Ewan and Shamus Currie).

Of “Santa Man” Ewan says: “There’s a lot of Christmas music out there, but not nearly enough Christmas Rock N Roll. So we’re making like Santa and delivering the December goods: a Xmas party banger for your next holiday shindig.” (I agree, more rock n roll holiday songs please!)

Shamus adds: “‘Hot Christmas’ is a spicy piece about getting away from it all and having a Christmas vacation complete with Latin grooves and rhythmic piano ideas.”

“Another Place” by Shred Kelly

As we creep closer to the release of Blurry Vision, the sixth album from Shred Kelly out on October 20th, the stoke-folk band is sharing another preview by wishing they were in “Another Place”.

Band member Tim Newton says the song is about never quite feeling like you’re in the right place, explaining: “When we’re on the road, we miss home, and when we’re home, we miss the experiences that travel brings. Our hearts are always in two places at once.”

One of those places will soon be here in Vancouver, as they are soon kicking off their tour with Elliott BROOD and stop at the Biltmore on October 6th!

“Pilgrims” by Tim Baker

With his new album, All Along The Mountain Road announced for October 20th, Tim Baker has released a new track called “Pilgrims”.

Of the song he says it is: “…sort of about being born in the wrong time - feeling more spiritual and religious than our modern, rational, digital reality encourages. It’s about feeling close to sweetness, ease, goodness, enlightenment even, but always being pulled away from it by reality - specifically the reality of the climate crisis and our inability to fix it, ignore it, or find some deeper meaning in it beyond senseless destruction. It also speaks to my life as a traveller, a searcher, someone who is always leaving, always reaching for something, but never quite seems to arrive and find it. But somehow still has hope and keeps going.”

Tim has announced a fall tour that’s billed as “an evening of songs, stories, stripped back and solo performances” - and he is doing two nights at St James Community Square here on November 23rd and 24th.

“Heading Home” by wiL&Co

For about two decades now, BC singer/songwriter William Mimnaugh has been going by the stage name WiL. But recently he wanted to highlight that there is more to WiL than just him, especially his legendary live shows which frequently feature drummer Keith Gallant and Matt Bromley on electric guitar. And so the name has evolved to: wiL&Co.

And along with the updated moniker, there is a brand new song, “Heading Home”.

A heartwrenching song about looking back, as Wil expands: “Not many songs are written from the perspective of someone who is ready to die. Our culture tends to shy away from the topic; perhaps since we are all heading there and we can't do a damn thing to change it we spend hours obsessing over its inevitability versus the alternative of being genuinely present; to acknowledge and appreciate what is right in front of us, good or bad rather than wile away the hours worrying about what hasn't happened. When you have lived 'a life' and arrived at a place where you know it's time; it can be peaceful; even liberating. This is what I realized after having had some remarkable conversations; knowing that once I leave the room, I may not see them ever again. In this case, a gent I got to know over the years who recently passed. He had accepted his imminent fate but also spoke some brutal truths with a glint and a grin. I was able to sit with him for one final scotch and a great chin wag”

“All Your Fails” by Kevin Drew

I’ve really been enjoying the vibes of the new music that Kevin Drew has been putting out lately, and am excited that the new album is finally out (physically - digitally that will be November 3).

The Aging LP has taken on a more sonic and melodic route, with songs reminding me of early Broken Social Scene.

“All Your Fails” fits that bill as well, and of it he says "Live by the mirror, die by the mirror. The loops of the constant reflective trauma continue within exploring vocal ranges beside Lake Ontario. I have always kept a journal next to my mouth for better or worse. I hope you enjoy this struggle anthem for the outdoor bedroom lovers of yesterday."

“Twenty Twenty” by Tim Baker

Just shy of a year out from his last album, The Festival, Tim Baker has announced a brand new companion EP, Along The Mountain Road.

The first single off the EP, “Twenty Twenty”, is a soaring song about Tim’s move from Toronto back to Newfoundland, and bracing himself for the uncertainty of the eponymous year.

Along The Mountain Road drops October 20th!

“Sure To Come” by iskwē

It’s always a good day for new music from iskwē.

“Sure to Come” is an incredibly catchy song — thanks in part to a marimba played by Miguel Haller, recorded in Mexico City — but with a much deeper undercurrent, as iskwē describes: “With so many ways to become obsolete in this world, and all the things we’re afraid of, it brings me a sense of calm knowing the only piece that’s certain is some day I’ll be forgotten. We cancel each other at the push of a button, we crumble at the thought of being entirely alone. Whether it be our turn now or tomorrow, that day is sure to come.”

So check it out below for the most upbeat existential crisis you’ll have all week!

“Change of Scene” by The Matinee

The Matinee have officially announced the release date for their fourth studio album, as well as the title track, “Change Of Scene”.
The album by the name name is set to be released on September 22nd and will be their first independent record.

With the announcement, we also got a video of the band out on lead singer Matt Layzell’s boat in English Bay. The song was a collective effort from the band after sharing a road trip down to Oregon and back - with no real itinerary or plan (or shows) - just a classic trip with the room to see everything and anything along the way.

The band will be performing at the Mosaic Arts Festival, and Harmony Arts Festival this week/month.

“Mama” by Hotel Mira

When the new track “Mama” from Hotel Mira kicks off, you might think you were going to get a pretty little ballad, but it quickly takes off into a fun, emo-tinged banger!

The band is set to release their new album I Am Not Myself, in just over a month on September 8th, after setting out on a huge tour this past spring.
But if you want to hear them in person this summer, you’ll be able to catch them if you’re in Kelowna for Rock The Lake on the Friday evening.

“3/2 (Loves Me)” by Clare Siobhan

I was hooked on the new song from Clare Siobhan, “3/2 (Loves Me)”, with the first line:
“We’re not a perfect match, we’re a perfect misfit”

The charming song was inspired by a prompt from a creative writing exercise, to craft a song with the word of “misfit,” though Claire explains, “I was thinking about it and didn’t really want to write a misfit-themed song in the original sense of the word, so I decided to start writing something I knew: I was falling in love at the time, and it was exciting and scary and all I could think about.”

“3/2 (Loves Me)” is the first single off her upcoming debut EP, which should be out later this year.

“Just Know It” by Dan Mangan

We’ve been getting singles and teases from Dan Mangan as of late, but we’ve finally got a new album announcement.
Dan’s 6th album Being Somewhere will be released on October 28th, and of it he says: “I wanted this album to feel like the inside crook of a familiar elbow on the nape of your neck, a comforting embrace”.

We also got another single off of the LP, “Just Know It”, a soft, piano-heavy track about “shooting yourself in the foot, told from the foot’s perspective”. It kind of reminds me of a track you would hear in a late 90’s early-2000’s drama like Dawson’s Creek - but in a very good way.

“Tooth and Nail” by Skye Wallace

Speaking of October 28… that’s also the day we’re getting the brand new album from Skye Wallace! The new album is Terribly Good and will be out on Six Shooter, and comes with another tease, the gritty “Tooth and Nail”.

Wallace says “This record is a banger of a journey through all the messy, sometimes ugly pieces of being alive and the beauty of growing while moving through it. I realized after it was completed that it was a love letter to myself, telling me to keep going.
“Tooth and Nail shouts defiance at all the expectations of failure I’ve met along the way, be it from outside sources or my own brain. The road here has been long, but creating music that makes me whole, and getting a chance to connect with people and feeling something altogether – That’s what it’s all about.”

Skye’s currently on tour in Europe, and will be returning home to Canada for a string of shows in November, including here in Vancouver at the Fox Cabaret on November 9th.

“You’re Not the Worst” by Housewife

The string of October announcements continues with Housewife, and their new five song collection called You’ll Be Forgiven, out on the 14th.

If the songs we’ve heard so far are any indication, the album will be incredibly catchy, and the latest single is no different. The duo says the new song “You’re Not The Worst” is “about undervaluing yourself and allowing people who are overbearing and arrogant to affect you emotionally. Why am I spending time with someone who doesn't respect me or my time? Then finally working up the courage to cut them out of your life when you've had enough.”

The new song comes with a fun animated video, which you can check out below.

“Echo Park” by Tim Baker

It is only one month until Tim Baker’s new solo album The Festival is released, and we’ve got a sweet little ode to the west coast in his new single “Echo Park”, a song about moving to LA and homesickness.

When the song started I immediately got a Wes Anderson vibe from it (maybe it’s just the slow motion vibe of and colouring of the lyric video) and could see it fitting into a teary-eyed montage.

“sucker4u” by Little Destroyer

Vancouver alt-rock band Little Destroyer have officially announced their new album 1134, out October 18th, and the first singles off of it have been some of their best yet in my opinion.

And with this announcement came a new single and music video - and the second I saw the cover still for it, I knew it would be a fun one.
Fo “sucker4u” the band, dressed up as ““Ace of Spades” era Motorhead”, start out in a sunny field, but end up crashing a pool party, Jack Daniels in hand.
A song about love, and lead singer Allie Sheldan coming-to-terms with the reality that she was “now an absolute love-sick sucker”.

“Summer Slaughter” by Babe Corner

Last Friday, Vancouver’s Babe Corner released “Summer Slaughter”, the first single off their debut full length album, Crybaby.

The breezy tune is the perfect end-of-summer comedown, inspired by “the chicken factory down the street from [their] house and the stench it gives off when mixed with the summer heat.”

“Grow Up Tomorrow” by The Beaches

Reading the words “the song was co-written with LOWELL”, I already knew this was going to be a great new song by The Beaches, and I wasn’t disappointed.

”Grow Up Tomorrow” is super fun, incredibly catchy, and has one hell of a house party music video to go along with it.
I expect to hear this on the radio for the rest of the summer.

“Fire Escape” by Dan Mangan

I can’t imaging anyone wanting to hurt Dan Mangan, but that’s exactly what Steven Ogg is set out to do in the brand new video for “Fire Escape”.

Dan shares that the song “is about our unshakable longing to be seen, heard, and understood. When everyone was isolated at home I became enamored with the idea of fire escapes becoming a gathering place, a way to connect with your neighbors. I love the idea that even in the very worst of circumstances or with limited resources, humans will find a way to feel unity.”

The video, directed by Lester Lyons-Hookham, features Ogg following Dan around to attack, abuse, assault, and generally make his life a bad time… though it might not quite be what it seems at first.

“Causeway Road” by Adam Baldwin

East Coast artist Adam Baldwin has released a new live video for his song “Causeway Road” off his upcoming album Concertos & Serenades (due out September 23rd).

I love both Adam’s voice and storytelling ability in his music, and this new tune is no different.
So in that vein, I’ll let HIM tell you what the song is about: “"Neil Young sang, 'The devil fools with the best-laid plans,' and in this case, a fellow's well-meaning ambition costs him a brother, a boat, and ultimately his livelihood. From betrayal to revenge, this story affirms another adage, 'An eye for an eye makes the world go blind.’"“

“Survivor’s Guilt” by Haley Blais

After headlining Khatsahlano and playing the Squamish Constellation festival this month, Vancouver’s Haley Blais isn’t slowing down, having just released another new song, “Survivor’s Guilt”

Haley says, ““Survivor’s Guilt” puts us at the scene of the crime where everything fell apart: the death of the family dog. I originally wrote it as this sad piano ballad, but David Vertesi (Producer) shifted the song towards something more summery and upbeat, contrasting the song’s stark lyrics and showcasing a sweltering slide guitar a la the style of Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do”. As we get older, inevitably we’ll lose things that are important to us. And when those losses come out of decisions, sometimes you can’t help but blame yourself. Sometimes the death of a childhood dog bursts up out of you, representing so much more than a dog, representing nothing more than a dog.”

“Year of the Dog” by Tim Baker

At last, we have a release date for the new Tim Baker album! The Festival will be out on October 7th via End Times Music, and the announcement comes with yet another tease of the album.

“Year of the Dog” starts with a soft piano, the song builds to an emotional release, possibly emblematic of the album as a whole; Tim says the album is “about living through, and actually being thankful for, difficulty and pain, for how they make you grow and appreciate beauty you couldn’t otherwise.”

Songs of the Week: June 20 - June 26, 2022

“Dance With You” by Arkells (feat. Cœur De Pirate and Aly & AJ)

Here is a collaboration I was not at all expecting. “Dance With You” is the disco-y new track from Arkells, and features not only francophone singer Cœur de pirate, but also pop duo Aly & AJ.

In tandem with the new single, the band also announced Blink Twice, their follow-up to their latest album Blink Once. Along with “Dance With You” and their previously released collab with Cold War Kids, they also team-up with the likes of Lights, Tegan and Sara, and most excitingly (for me, anyway) Joel Plaskett!

The album comes out on September 23, and you can catch them here in BC playing Laketown Shakwtown on June 30, or in Surrey for a free show on July 1st!

“secret” by nêhiyawak

While this song by nêhiyawak is not by any means new, the video is and I thought it worth sharing!
The song “secret” is from their 2020 debut album “nipiy” (translates to ‘water’ from the nêhiyaw language).
I adore this album (and have it on vinyl) and the new video was directed by Dene multidisciplinary artist Casey Koyczan
The video itself is an “exploration of Indigenous customs through the prismatic lens of First Nations youth and performers, as they drum and dance through blasts of full spectrum colour and enveloping texture”.

I really hope we get some new music from nêhiyawak soon - I’m on the lookout.

“Some Day” by Tim Baker

Last week we got another brand new song from Tim Baker, and also a preview of a new project!

“Some Day” is a summery tune — perfect for the current mini-heatwave here in Vancouver — with bouncy piano and beautiful harmonies.

Baker also put out the teaser trailer for a series of sketches he’ll be releasing, teaming with his long time friends and producers/writers Jordan Canning and Adam Christie (of Schitts Creek, Baroness Von Sketch Show). Tim says: "We put together a series of sketches filmed in Toronto. You'll see me awaken from my covid stupor, endeavour to become relevant, fit, road ready, all the while surrounded by incredible comedic actors and usually dressed ridiculously. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did filming them. Keep an eye out on YouTube for the full series."

“Mountain” by JEEN

As she gets ready to release her third album in as many years(!) JEEN gave another tease of her upcoming album Tracer last week, with the new single “Mountain”.

JEEN is joined by frequent collaborator Ian Blurton, as well as Robin Hatch and Stephan Szczesniak on the new song, and says, “I wrote ‘Mountain’ in early spring 2021 after spending too much time fixating on the irreparable parts of everything...it’s really just a song about trying to let that shit go. There was so much going on out there politically and morally at the time. I had just started releasing a record (Dog Bite) and I was also writing a new one (Tracer) all while dipping in and out of lockdowns...I started getting panic attacks a lot and just needed to chill out. I guess this track was my attempt to try and keep things in perspective.”

The new album Tracer is due out October 21.

“Lucky Few” by Tim Baker

Tim Baker is back! In his first new release since 2020’s Survivors EP, Baker dropped the brand new song “Lucky Few” last week.

An unsurprisingly gorgeous, piano-driven tune, “Lucky Few“ is about longing for people and the attempting to make connections. Tim says "This is a song that grew directly from these years of social isolation. It’s about missing people, and missing the power of connection, shared emotion and music. The rhythm section and I performed it live off the floor (the second floor of the Fogo Island Inn to be exact - an incredible piano they have there, among a lot of other incredibles), and I later added violins and a little choir of friends at home."

“Unseen” by Harrison Brome

Vancouver’s Harrison Brome just announced a 5-song EP titled Strange to be released on June 17th. And with it comes a new track “Unseen” which reflects on “feelings of frustration, self-doubt, and rejection that can come along with breakups”.

Harrison is such a talented artist, and is one whose genre I couldn’t even begin to nail down. Give it a listen.

“On and On” by JEEN

JEEN might just be the hardest working musician in Canada right now. She released a self-titled album in 2020, and then Dog Bite in 2021, and is already announcing a third album is as many years, Tracer due out on October 21.

The first single, “On and On” is a gritty rockers, and JEEN revealed, “I wrote ‘On and On’ last spring/summer when nothing felt worth it anymore…everything was grinding me down when I was working on this one. On and On is about breaking points and falling down more times than you’re willing to get back up.”

“Faith In Doubt” by Holy Hum

Last week the sophomore, full-length release from Holy Hum, Let It Be Desire, was announced and released digitally (physical released in the fall).
The album explores “what it means to yearn, to accept, to question, and, ultimately, to become” and kicks off with “Faith In Doubt”.
It’s 17 minutes long, so buckle in!

“The Other Man” [Sloan cover] by Twin River

You know me, I love a good cover! And last week, Twin River dropped their version of Sloan’s “The Other Man”.

The live video sees the Vancouver band put their own spin on the classic song (which, fun fact, is allegedly inspired the real-life love triangle between Sloan’s Chris Murphy, Leslie Feist, and Broken Social Scene member Andrew Whiteman!)

“Lost Cool” by Holy Fuck (feat. Lucia Tacchetti)

Toronto’s Holy Fuck is getting the jump on a busy 2022, with a brand new single, “Lost Cool”.

Following their previous single “Airport Dreams” — which features Sarah Bonito from Kero Kero Bonito — “Lost Cool” continues the trend of guest vocals with Madrid-based Electro-Pop artist Lucia Tacchetti lending her pipes to the dark yet danceable tune.

The pair of songs proceed a comprehensive tour, starting February 4th right here in Vancouver, and crisscrossing the globe for the next four months.

“Life Goes By And I Can’t Keep Up” by Dear Rouge

Dear Rouge has slowly been releasing new music from their highly anticipated next album (due out next year), and after a banger of a song in “Fake Fame”, we get a delicate ballad in “Life Goes By And I Can’t Keep Up”.

Drew joins Danielle on sharing the lead vocals on this one, and in the video the pair roam the Vancouver streets (Burrard Hotel and Granville Street being the main recognizable landmarks).

Around the 3:15 mark of the song, I got SERIOUS “Anthems For A Seventeen-Year-Old Girl” by Broken Social Scene vibes, and that makes sense as the song was born during a jam session at Brendan Canning of BSS’s home.
It’s a beautiful track, with incredibly relatable sentiments. Give it a listen or five.

“The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” by Rose Cousins (feat. Tim Baker)

What’s better than a new song from Rose Cousins? How about a new song from Rose Cousins featuring a duet with Tim Baker?

“The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” sees the pair of celebrated East Coasters come together for a song that was co-written after a conversation that the two had over coffee “revealed a theme that resonated deeply in both of us,” says Cousins. “Being a human is vulnerable and it's hard to remember the harsh voices in our heads are our own creations. We needed a lullaby for ourselves and that's what we made. I'm glad we recorded this duet to honour how it felt to share the experience. Sometimes just knowing you're not the only one is the greatest comfort."
