Songs of the Week: June 30 - July 06, 2025

July 07, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Sunshine” by Royal Wood

Summer’s in full swing, so maybe you need a little more “Sunshine” in your life?

The new song from Royal Wood comes with the announcement of his ninth studio album, Dear John. It’s an upbeat, summer jam that Wood says is “inspired by the Buddhist ideology that behind every cloud is a forever blue sky. No matter the metaphoric storm in life, peace and love are always present. Once you steer your heart with this principle, hope and faith return. I wanted the song to feel like sunshine itself. Like I had it in a bottle, and I could drink it. This is my summer jam.”

Have a listen below, and kee an ear out when Dear John drops on October 17 via Cordova Bay Records.

“Good Luck, Babe!” (Chappell Roan Cover) by Rose Cousins

I’ve heard Chappell Roan’s song “Good Luck, Babe!” probably 100 times, so when I saw that Rose Cousins covered it, I needed to hear it.

There’s something special about a cover when it completely becomes it’s own, and this is definitely one of them. It takes the sentiments from the original and puts it into a delicate and soft reworking that creates an air of melancholy.

Beautiful job and hopefully we can hear it in October when she performs at St James Hall on the 6th!

“Pine” by Kathleen Edwards

Kathleen Edwards is giving us another tease of her upcoming album Billionaire with the stripped down, vulnerable new track “Pine”

The song came to Edwards on the road, as she explains: “On the 2-day drive from Ottawa to Nashville, a line popped in my head, ‘when we go our separate ways, the thought of you stays.’ By the time I arrived in Nashville I had written ‘Pine’ and it was the first track we put down for this album. Friends who can’t be lovers. A classic country song. At first the arrangement made me feel incredibly bare and exposed, but I now love the spare production, Jason’s super dry electric solo makes me feel like Dusty.”

It’s a gorgeous song to crank on the car stereo on a late summer night, with the windows down as the sun sets. Listen for yourself below, and note down August 22nd for the release of Billionaire.

Songs of the Week: October 23 - 29, 2023

“Dark Angel” by Rose Cousins, Jill Barber, and Jenn Grant

Can you think of a better trio of Canadian singers than Rose Cousins, Jill Barber, and Jenn Grant? Neither could Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy.

Barber explains that she was backstage at a Blue Rodeo show last spring with Grant, when “Jim Cuddy turned to us and suggested that, along with Rose Cousins, we should form a trio... like a Canadian version of the Dolly Parton, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris ‘Trio’. The next thing we knew we were sending Rose a video message saying: ‘we're doing this, because Jim said so’.”

So of course, their first single is a gorgeous & haunting cover of “Dark Angel”, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of Five Days In July.

Hopefully we hear more from the trio in the future, but for now, check out the cover below!

“Halloween Store” by Andy Shauf

Phewf! We got this one in under the wire…couldn’t leave out “Halloween Store” by Andy Shauf the day before Halloween!

It’s a fun, and chaotic, little song, and now it has a fun, and chaotic, little video to go along with it.

I hope you all have your costumes for tomorrow - I have to get back to work on mine.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Songs of the Week: October 25 - 31, 2021

November 01, 2021 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

“Lost Cool” by Holy Fuck (feat. Lucia Tacchetti)

Toronto’s Holy Fuck is getting the jump on a busy 2022, with a brand new single, “Lost Cool”.

Following their previous single “Airport Dreams” — which features Sarah Bonito from Kero Kero Bonito — “Lost Cool” continues the trend of guest vocals with Madrid-based Electro-Pop artist Lucia Tacchetti lending her pipes to the dark yet danceable tune.

The pair of songs proceed a comprehensive tour, starting February 4th right here in Vancouver, and crisscrossing the globe for the next four months.

“Life Goes By And I Can’t Keep Up” by Dear Rouge

Dear Rouge has slowly been releasing new music from their highly anticipated next album (due out next year), and after a banger of a song in “Fake Fame”, we get a delicate ballad in “Life Goes By And I Can’t Keep Up”.

Drew joins Danielle on sharing the lead vocals on this one, and in the video the pair roam the Vancouver streets (Burrard Hotel and Granville Street being the main recognizable landmarks).

Around the 3:15 mark of the song, I got SERIOUS “Anthems For A Seventeen-Year-Old Girl” by Broken Social Scene vibes, and that makes sense as the song was born during a jam session at Brendan Canning of BSS’s home.
It’s a beautiful track, with incredibly relatable sentiments. Give it a listen or five.

“The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” by Rose Cousins (feat. Tim Baker)

What’s better than a new song from Rose Cousins? How about a new song from Rose Cousins featuring a duet with Tim Baker?

“The Lullaby (My Oldest Love)” sees the pair of celebrated East Coasters come together for a song that was co-written after a conversation that the two had over coffee “revealed a theme that resonated deeply in both of us,” says Cousins. “Being a human is vulnerable and it's hard to remember the harsh voices in our heads are our own creations. We needed a lullaby for ourselves and that's what we made. I'm glad we recorded this duet to honour how it felt to share the experience. Sometimes just knowing you're not the only one is the greatest comfort."

Have a listen below, but make sure you’re sitting down first, because you’re going to need a chair to melt right into.

March 18, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Rose Cousins has released another single and video, "White Flag", from her new album Natural Conclusion which is out now. The song is a slow, sad but moving song with beautiful piano, and the visuals in the video pair perfectly.

She will be performing here in Vancouver tomorrow night at the Wise Hall - click here for more information!

Song of the Day: January 29, 2017 - "Chains" by Rose Cousins

January 29, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

First we received "Freedom" from Rose Cousins, and now we have a new single (and video) called "Chains". If the two singles are any indication of the new album (Natural Conclusion on Feb 3rd), holy moley am I ever excited.

"Chains" is verging on country, which is definitely visualized in the video below, and seems like a new direction, at least for this album. Happy Sunday everyone, have a listen below.

Song of the Day: December 13, 2016 - "Freedom" by Rose Cousins

December 13, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Rose Cousins has released a new single, "Freedom", and announced a new album Natural Conclusion, due out February 3rd 2017!

"Freedom" is a beautiful song that instantly reminded me of early 90's Tragically Hip ("Grace, Too"), and represents the idea of choice, and giving up something in order to get something.

The record has an all star lineup from producer Joe Henry, to the band (Gord Tough, and Kinley Downing to name a few), and a choir that includes the likes of Jill Barber, and Miranda Mullholland. Have a listen to "Freedom" below.
