Song of the Day: January 4, 2017 - "RAPIDS" by The Acorn

January 04, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The Acorn's album Vieux Loup came out in 2015, and we have a music video for "RAPIDS" now. I still continue to start many mornings off with this album, so i thought this would be a good reminder for you all.

Now, if only we could get a tour out west...pretty please!

Song of the Day: December 26, 2016 - "Sierra Nevada" by Windmills

December 26, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I have a feeling that you might need something to put you at peace today. To make you tranquil. That's where this new song from Windmills comes in.

The looper from Kelowna just released a brand new song called "Sierra Nevada", and it is the perfect song to just sit back, close your eyes, let it wash over you and drift high, above the Sierra Nevada mountains.

It'll be out early next year on a 7", and hopefully is a tease of a new full length album soon.

Song of the Day: December 23, 2016 - "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by The Darcys

December 23, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

There aren't many original Christmas songs that are written that stick around like the traditional ones do, but Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is definitely one of them, and honestly, it's a favourite of mine.

So combine this with one of my favourite acts of 2016, The Darcys, doing a cover very true to them, and I'm a happy caroller. Turn this one up, and sing along!

Song of the Day: December 21, 2016 - "Santa Baby" by Nice Horse

December 21, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Call me whatever grinchy names you want, but I am going to admit something: I do not like Christmas music. I do not like traditional Christmas songs. I do not like covers of them. I do not even like newer Christmas songs, for the most part.

But, of course, there are a few exceptions. And while I was mighty skeptical of any cover of "Santa Baby", the country gals of Nice Horse managed to put a smile on my face with their new rendition (the whiskey in the opening line probably helped).

They call themselves "the Zac Brown Band in miniskirts; the Runaways at a hoedown; the Spice Girls on a whiskey bender" and I certainly can't argue with that. So while we keep waiting for their first proper single, let's all forget the eggnog (it's gross, Team Antinog), grab some whiskey instead, and have a listen.

Song of the Day: December 20, 2016 - "Coconut" by The Pack A.D.

December 20, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's that time of year when indie bands start releasing holiday/Christmas songs, and we just got one from The Pack A.D.!

The most important thing we learn from this song is that the ladies are pro-Nog (Team Eggnog FTW).

And they're giving the song  "Coconuts" away for free - click here to download it!

Song of the Day: December 19, 2016 - "Dancing on your Grave (acoustic)" by The Matinée

December 19, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's a hobbit birthday tradition to give gifts to others, so today I am gifting you a stripped down song from The Matinée.
(Okay, so, it's kind of a re-gift, since they initially gifted it, but whatever, you get the point.)

It's an acoustic version of their newest single "Dancing On Your Grave", and and unlike some acoustic songs which just sound like 'the song, but slower' this one almost drastically changes the tone of it. Take a listen for yourself!

Song of the Day: December 18, 2016 - "Neon Dad" by Holy Fuck

December 18, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Holy Fuck's new album Congrats came out earlier this year, and just the other day they released a brand new video for the track "Neon Dad"

Director Scott Cudmore says "The song title ‘Neon Dad’ made me think of some kind of psychedelic god, like a patriarchal, biblical God…and then that made me think about the David & Goliath story and what if that happened now, in our modern world? How would the sudden celebrity affect that young man? That was the jumping off point…it’s a bit of the classic fish-out-of-water story mixed with a parody of “lifestyle” culture. The real Goliaths are of our own making."

Check it out below!

Song(s) of the Day: December 17, 2016 - "Astrocolor EP" by Astrocolor

December 17, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Last year Victoria's Astrocolor released an album of experimental holiday songs (Lit Up), and now the band is back with a short, self-titled, EP of 3 (non-seasonal) songs.

We're told to expect more new music in 2017, and if it's most of this disco-esque, funky electronic music, I'm all in. Put your dance shoes on and give it a listen!
