Song of the Day: November 21, 2016 - "Sleep In The Heat" by PUP

November 21, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

If you're a dog lover, prepare yourself for this one...

PUP has released a new music video for their song "Sleep In The Heat" that features the kids from the "Guilt Trip" video, including Finn Wolfhard, now of Stranger Things fame. Grant Lawrence doesn't come back from the dead in it, but it picks up "three years" after the last video, showing the band/kids on the road. They run into an adorable dog, annnnnd I'll let you watch it from there.

What? I'm not crying. YOU are crying.

Conveniently, PUP is in town tonight, performing at the Cobalt this evening with Meat Wave and Chastity - hope you've got your tickets, because it's sold out!

Song of the Day: November 17, 2016 - "Walk Out On The Water" by Royal Canoe

November 17, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Royal Canoe has just released the a brand new video for "Walk Out On The Water" which, near as I can tell, is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the lead character wants to be less of a Mad Max and more a Broadway Dancer.

It's off their latest album Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, but if you're in Winnipeg, you can catch them performing new music written for a contemporary production of Shakespeare’s Richard II titled “Am I Not King?”. They'll be accompanying the play from December 14-17 at the West End Cultural Centre.

Song(s) of the Day: November 16, 2016 - "Back/Rings" by Drowzy

November 16, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

House of Commons is a brand new record label started by Stephen Ramsay & Catherine McCandless of Young Galaxy, and the latest release is from Ramsay's new electronic project Drowzy.

Back/Rings reflects the spirit of electronic improvisation, and Stephen says:

"With Drowzy, I wanted to underscore how the creative process and workflow has changed, and how important spontaneity and immediacy are in this day and age. 'Back/Rings' is an exploration on themes of minimalism, repetition, dissonance and drone. Both tracks were recorded live, with minimal edits done to the finished product. Both are limited to less than 10 overdubs and no acoustic instruments were used in the recording. The idea was to capture some of the kinetic energy of the analog synths and to document the interplay."

Song of the Day: November 15 2016 - "Youngblood" by Little India

November 15, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

So, right off the bat, as far as I know this song isn't about the band Youngblood, but that would be fun, right?

New music from Little India this week, with an album (Neon Jungle) on the horizon as well. "Youngblood" has shades of other songs that I can't put my finger on (it's driving me nuts), but it's all the good stuff: danceability, a sing-along chorus that's already stuck in my head, driving drums.

Take a listen below and be prepared to shimmy in your seat.

Song of the Day: November 14, 2016 - "That's The Way I Walk" by Tommy Hawkins

November 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know Thomas D'Arcy from the band Small Sins, or his own solo albums, or being a pretty prolific producer.

You may know Hawksley Workman from supergroup Mounties or, you know, being Hawksley friggin' Workman.

Well, seemingly out of nowhere the pair has teamed up for a brand new project called Tommy Hawkins, and dropped the first single, "That's The Way I Walk". It's off a six-song EP called Amy, which comes out at the end of the week (Nov 18), and pretty much demands being cranked. Check it below.

It's a Ned Flanders-themed metal band called Okilly Dokilly. Their first single is called "White Wine Spritzer" (spritzer... spritzer... spritzer...) off the album Howdilly Doodilly.

That's all you need to know.
