Song of the Day: August 30, 2016 - "Deo Gratis" by Krief

August 30, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton

The new album from Montreal's Krief doesn't come out until the end of September, but you can get another taste of automanic with a lyric video for the latest song, "Deo Gratis".

When asked about the song, Patrick Krief said “The lyrics were written and all the arrangements recorded in just a few hours in my home studio. The content of the lyrics touching on religious upbringing and eventually losing faith, yet always wondering if that in your final moments, you might still call out to God.  That same night a close friend of mine's grandfather (which whom he was really close) passed away. He came over that night to go over the words of the eulogy with me. I asked if I could name the song after his grandfather whose name was Deogracias. Which translates to "Thank you God" I changed the title to the Latin version of the name. Deo Gratias”

Pick up automanic September 30th via Culvert Music and check out "Deo Gratis" below.

Song of the Day: August 27, 2016 - "Real Life Turns Me On" by Combine The Victorious - Kreap Remix

August 27, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Saturday morning calls for a disco-dance party, and Combine The Victorious has you covered.

Their song was recently remixed by Australian artist Kreap, and while it still has the core of their awesome song, even more of a dance vibe has been added.

Rumour has it there is more new music on the way from CtV, and I can't wait to hear it!

Also, check out the original below:

Song of the Day: August 26, 2016 - "On My Own" by Bear Mountain

August 26, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Here's a collaboration I don't think I ever would have imagined. "On My Own" is the second single off the upcoming Bear Mountain album called Badu, and was cowritten by none other than Nelly Furtado.

On their soundcloud page, frontman Ian Bevis writes:

"Earlier this year I got the opportunity to write a song with Nelly Furtado. Right away it was a great vibe and connection. Nelly had the idea to write about the fights or breakups you see couples getting into outside of a bar or club. "You don't have the right, to come ruin my night", it feels like this person is trying to protect themselves against this ex-lover who has come to re-hash the past. In the heat of the fight they say something they might regret, "You're such a joke". The line is so direct, mean even. But this person has to protect themselves from getting caught up in their past. It was such a pleasure to write with Nelly, she's so talented and iconic, and this is easily one of my favourite song's on our album."

The song is deceptively upbeat and catchy for a slightly darker subject; you can check it out below, and then pick up Badu when it comes out September 9th on Last Gang Records

Song of the Day: August 25, 2016 - "Love You Like That" by Royal Canoe

August 25, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The new album, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, is out in a few weeks (Sept 16) but Royal Canoe has just enough time to sneak out one more song in advance. "Love You Like That" seems a bit more experimental and outer-spacey than the previous two singles, but keeps coming back to a funky, catchy chorus.

They'll also be hitting the road soon and I would highly recommend being at the Imperial on September 30th.

Song of the Day: August 23, 2016 - "Drove Through Town" by Donovan Woods

August 23, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

2016 Polaris Prize (long list) nominee Donovan Woods has announced a new national tour this fall, including a stop at the Fox Cabaret on November 11th.

He's released a song from the They Are Going Away EP, called "Drove Through Town", which, as the press release puts it "provides a backdrop for the big issues, from living up to expectations to escaping a dead-end relationship".

The simplistic song, with beautiful guitar and piano parts, only accentuates Donovan's infectious voice. Have a listen below.
