Song of the Day: March 31, 2018 - "I Really Like You" by Little Junior (Carly Rae Jepsen cover)

March 31, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Not sure I knew that I needed a shot-for-shot remake of Carly Rae Jepsen's song "I Really Like" you, covered by Toronto power-pop band Little Junior, that stars Schitt's Creek's Annie Murphy in a (pretty freaky) Tom Hanks mask...but I guess I did.

From the band:
"Whatever money we get for covering this tune by the flawless Carly Rae Jepsen is going to Youth Line, a youth-led organization that provides peer support for LGBTQ2 youth in Toronto. It's a great cause and we feel we have a responsibility to use our privilege to give back to our community. To our LGBTQ2 family and friends: we see you, we're here for you." - Rane Elliott-Armstrong

Also, good luck getting it un-stuck from your brain after watching it!

P.S. The band will be on tour across Canada with Born Ruffians, including a stop in Vancouver on May 4th at Fortune Sound Club.

Song of the Day: June 25, 2017 - "When The Levee Breaks" by Harrow Fair

June 25, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

If you haven't heard Harrow Fair's cover of the Memphis Minnie song "When The Levee Breaks" (which they recorded live at Revolution Recording in Toronto), let it haunt you this Sunday morning!

The band, made up of Miranda Mulholland (formerly Great Lake Swimmers) & Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players), still haven't made it out to Vancouver for a show (that I've seen), but I'll definitely be there when they do!

I have to admit I hadn't heard the original song by Phantogram, but since I love everything that Pup does, I knew this had to be good, and I was right.

Check out the band covering "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" below, and be sure to get your tickets to come see them when they're in Vancouver live on November 23rd, with Meat Wave, at the Cobalt.

Apologies if you're singing it for the rest of the day, but it's worth it.

Song of the Day, July 27, 2016 - "Hold Up" by Stars [Beyoncé cover]

July 27, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Stars have unveiled the latest in their year long, monthly cover series, and it's "Hold Up" by none other than Beyoncé.

“Why did we cover this Beyonce song? Because we love it. Because she's the queen of pop and we're not. Because it's, very oddly, right in Torq's singing range. We don't know. We don't know anything anymore … At least there's this: A song about love. It’s all we've ever had. It is all we will ever have. And we are fools to have counted on anything else. Happy last summer on earth everyone. Beyonce has got you."

Song of the Day: July 19, 2016 - "Hand In My Pocket" Alanis Morissette cover by Seaway

July 19, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

All I saw was "covers Alanis Morissette's "Hand In My Pocket" and I knew I needed to listen.

Oakville, Ontario outfit Seaway took on the song with their pop-punk twist and it's definitely catchy.

The band will be in Vancouver tonight (July 19th) at the Cobalt with Coldfront and Rarity - more info here. Give the cover a listen below, and hear their latest album Colour Blind by clicking HERE.

Song of the Day: June 25, 2016 - "Lay Down In The Tall Grass" by Skye Wallace [Timber Timbre cover]

June 25, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you've seen Skye Wallace perform live in the last little while, you may have seen her cover Timber Timbre's "Lay Down In The Tall Grass". In fact, I saw her play a solo set this past weekend for Car Free Day, where she admitted the song almost made her new upcoming album, but it was cut because she was recording with the drummer from Timber Timbre, and that may have been a bit weird.

Anyway, you can hear the cover below in a session she did with Southern Souls, or you just might be able to hear it tomorrow (Sunday) night at the Rickshaw Theatre, where Skye is playing a show with David Newberry!
