Song(s) of the Day: June 2, 2016 - Ancient Shapes Self-Titled Album

June 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Surprise!
When Daniel Romano released his record Mosey, he also unexpectedly dropped a new album under a new moniker Ancient Shapes, and it's a punk rock record!

I grew up in the Niagara Region in Ontario where it feels like almost all of Canada's punk rock scene came from, including Attack In Black.

Ancient Shapes isn't as loud as early AIB, and not as mellow as late AIB, and it's definitely not country-Daniel Romano. It's it's own thing with clear influence from his past and present, and I love it. Give it a listen below...

Song of the Day: June 1, 2016 - "Life As It Happens" by Krief

June 01, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been almost four years since we last heard music from Krief (aka Patrick Krief, who you may know from The Dears, and is also one of my favourite guitarists).

Well, he's making up for lost time this fall, with a double album. automanic comes is two halfs, red and blue, and Patrick Krief says in the press release that they are "autonomous in their flow, yet not meant to be listened to in one sitting."

automanic red will feature "a bold sound and brash lyrics fueled by anger, anguish and ego" while automanic blue will be more a "sober reflection, grappling with reality, and mortality".

You can hear the first hints of automanic red below, with the lyric video for "Life As It Happens"

Song of the Day: May 31, 2016 - "You and I Are a Gang of Losers" by The Dears

May 31, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

May 31, 2009. That was the day of the very first post from 3am Revelations appeared on the internet. First there was a introductory blurb, and then a show recap from The Dears at Richard's on Richards from the night before.

Even if you haven't been following for seven years, you may know that The Dears are one of my top 4 favourite bands, so I was very happy to be leading off the new blog with their amazing live show (plus, the opening acts were Jets Overhead and Black Diamond Bay; what a lineup!)

So what better way to celebrate those seven years than with a classic from that very band. From the album Gang of Losers, one of my all-time favourites: "You And I Are A Gang Of Losers".

(PS: the above was the first logo for 3amR. The llama never made it into the final version. Don't ask.)

Song of the Day: May 30, 2016 - "Rideback" by Hannah Georgas

May 30, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Saxamaphone! As a former band geek, I was super excited when I heard the horns on the new single from Hannah Georgas, "Rideback".

The new album, For Evelyn, is less than a month from it's debut (June 24 - pre-order it here) and a few tour dates have been announced for the summer, including a headlining slot at Khatsahlano on July 9th.

Check out the beautiful new song below, and be sure to get your hands on this spectacular new album!

Song of the Day: May 29, 2016 - "Joni" by BRAIDS

May 29, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last week, Braids released their Companion EP which is, well, a companion to their JUNO-winning full length Deep In The Iris.

We already heard the title track, but they've released another video, this time for the song "Joni".

The song has a kind of frantic energy to it, with a video that "explores the end of a relationship, with a couple striving to reclaim their individuality while remaining close together."

This week The Sheepdogs released a cover of Lead Belly's "Cotton Fields" that they recorded backstage while rehearsing during their international tour.

Song of the Day: May 27, 2016 - "Mind Over Matter" by TUNS

May 27, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New supergroup alert! TUNS consists of Chris Murphy (Sloan) Matt Murphy (Super Friendz, Flashing Lights), and Mike O’Neill (Inbreds).
I actually spotted this band when I began going through the NXNE 2016 lineup, and did a double take when I spotted Chris Murphy's mug in the band photo.

Their self-titled debut will be out on August 26th, and the first single, which is our Song Of The Day, is called "Mind Over Matter". I haven't spotted any tour dates outside of the NXNE gig, but we'll be sure to let you know about them!
