Song of the Day: April 04, 2016 - "Xed Eyes" by Holy Fuck

April 04, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

So much new music coming out lately, and when this one landed in my inbox I may have let out an excited squeal.

Holy Fuck has released a new song titled "Xed Eyes" from their upcoming LP Congrats, following up their first single Tom Tom.

I think I listened to the new song about 5 or 6 times in a row, and it got me up and out of the butt groove I've established in my desk chair.

Tour plans for late spring/early summer include the Field Trip festival in Toronto, and here in Vancouver in Stanley Park as part of the Levitation Festival on June 17th.

Song of the Day: April 03, 2016 - "Murphy's Law" by Chersea

April 03, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

All you need to know about this song is that it features Chersea playing the keytar.

Okay... you probably want to know a little more than that. "Murphy's Law" is Chersea's newest single, and her entry into this year's CBC Searchlight competition. As you can see from the video, the looper has added a couple members into the mix, Chartwell Kerr on drums and Adam Dean on bass.

In a Facebook post, Chersea said about the song:

In the wake of several media-laden sexual abuse charges/cases, I was inspired to write this song. It is a discussion between victim and abuser. This is my answer to this socially constructed issue.

Take a listen below!

Song of the Day: April 02, 2016 - "If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will" by PUP

April 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

More new music from Toronto band PUP, that, and this is just a guess here, may have stemmed from the 2 straight years of touring?

"If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will" is the latest single off of the upcoming new release The Dream Is Over (out on May 27).

PUP will (shocker!) be touring this spring starting April 17th in Europe and then heading across North America. The only Canadian date so far is Toronto on May 26th, but fingers crossed when they're on the west coast of the USA, they'll pop back up here.

Song of the Day: April 01, 2016 - "Untitled//404" by Kirsten Ludwig

April 01, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I love being caught off guard by an album; not knowing what to expect and then being pleasantly surprised. And that's how I felt listening to the new one from Kirsten Ludwig. I hadn't really heard any of her music before listening to Honest Tracks, and I was immediately drawn in by the haunting and moody and beautiful album. I even had a hard time choosing just one song (I changed this post three times while writing it).

Ultimately, I went with the gorgeous piano and heartfelt vocals of "Untitled//404". I highly recommend clicking through to Bandcamp below and listening to (and/or purchasing) the whole thing.

Kirsten is also a part of the latest Madic Records House Show tour, with the Vancouver show taking place on April 5 where she'll be joined by Alexandria Maillot.
You can find out more details, and how to attend, through the facebook event.

Song of the Day: March 31, 2016 - "Forest" by David Beckingham

March 31, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Yesterday I posted the latest song from Hey Ocean's David Vertesi, and now we get to hear from his bandmate David Beckingham, with the first single off his upcoming solo album, Just When The Light.

According to the press release, the album "chronicles an intense and personal time leading up to and following the hiatus of Hey Ocean, and the demise of a long-term relationship."

The first single "Forest" features guest vocals from the third Hey Ocean member Ashleigh Ball, and you can pick up the full album May 22nd.

Song of the Day: March 30, 2016 - "Mountainside Part II" by David Vertesi

March 30, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

David Vertesi may just be one of the busiest musicians in Vancouver. Between putting on benefit shows (#SingItFwd) and cover nights and playing in Hey Ocean!, it's a wonder how he had any time to record his second solo album, Sad Dad Cruise Ship.

The album is out April 22nd on and the latest single is "Mountainside part II", which features Vertesi's deep voice taking you along some of the same themes as its predecessor, "Mountainside" off his first album Cardiography.

You can catch him live soon touring with Said the Whale, both as the opener, and filling in for them on bass! They hit Vancouver at the Fox Theatre May 7th.

Song of the Day: March 29, 2016 - "Forgettery" by Dan Mangan + Blacksmith

March 29, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Amazing Factory living up to their name once again, with a brand new video for "Forgettery" by Dan Mangan + Blacksmith.

One of my favourite songs off their album Club Meds, the video was directed by We Are The City drummer Andrew Huculiak -- who also directed the award-winning VIOLENT -- and follows several characters through moments of self-realization, including one portrayed by none other than Rainn Wilson!
