March 28, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Happy National Piano Day!

Conveniently we have a new release from Nathan Shubert's solo piano project, put out especially for today.

The composition is called "Saga Norén, Länskrim, Malmö" and there is also a performance video to go along with it.

You might recognize Nathan's face from many other Vancouver/Canadian bands where you'll find him playing keys, Jody Glenham, David Newberry, and Rich Hope to name a few. Enjoy the new music below...

Song of the Day: March 26, 2016 - "Wonderful Life" by STARS

March 26, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

STARS has released the third song from their year long cover project, this time putting their twist on "Wonderful Life" by Colin Vearncombe aka Black.

Tragically Colin died in January after a traffic accident and Torquil Campbell of STARS said (in a press release) "We love this song and wanted to pay tribute to a great artist who you may not be familiar with."
Check the song out below.

Song(s) of the Day: March 25, 2016 - for you remix EP by The Belle Game

March 25, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

In light of the news yesterday, The Belle Game wrote this on their Facebook, and their bandcamp:

If we can’t rely on legal systems to protect victims of sexual abuse then lets support the people who will.
For the next week our discography will be available to download here at any price you choose. 100% of the proceeds will go to Women Against Violence Against Women in Vancouver.
Lets support organizations that we know are working to protect and help victims of sexual assault, abuse, and rape.
Encouraging our music friends to do the same.
♡ x 1,000,000 to you all! ‪#‎believewomen‬ ‪#‎IBelieveSurvivors‬

Along with that, they released an EP of remixes from STINT, 8PRN, Andy Dixon, and Prison Hair. Listen below, and click through to their bandcamp to download.
(I also highly recommend their 2013 album Ritual Tradition Habit if you don't already have it)

Song of the Day: March 24, 2016 - "One Heart" by Joshua Winstead

March 24, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know Joshua Winstead as the bassist & synth player for a little band called Metric. But this June, he'll be releasing his own solo album titled MMXX. It'll be out on Royal Cut Records, but will be available through his website for a pay-what-you-want price.

In the press release, Winstead says his desire to make a solo record “stemmed from writing all these very personal songs and served as a way to connect with his lifelong love of singing.” And that “I grew up singing and I played in a number of rock bands where I was always a singer/guitar player.  I realized that I really missed singing, and knew it was time to make an album.”

You can hear the results of that desire in the first single off the album, "One Heart".

Song of the Day: March 23, 2016 - "No Worries Gonna Find Us" by Plants and Animals

March 23, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Plants and Animals continues to tease their upcoming album, Waltzed in from the Rumbling. It's due out April 29th on Secret City Records, but they just dropped the second single, "No Worries Gonna Find Us". It's an upbeat and carefree song, perfect for slow drive to nowhere in particular, as the sun is setting.

And they'll be touring this spring, which will take them through Vancouver when they hit the Imperial Theatre on June 16, with another favourite Royal Canoe supporting them. That's gonna be a show you won't wanna miss!

Song of the Day: March 22, 2016 - "Face On" by Animalia

March 22, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A little while ago I stumbled across a song called "Paradise" by Animalia, and was immediately infatuated. It was the first single off her upcoming album (dissonance) -- which is out April 16th, and is really, really good -- and now we have an aural peek at another song, "Face On". It's another song that just overflows with emotion.

She says about the song:

"I think people that are emotionally sensitive to the world around them often feel betrayed and abused by the power those events have over them. But that self-awareness, often feels like self-obsessiveness, feeding a guilt cycle.
The world seems to toy with your emotions, picking you up and then dropping you back down just as quickly. 'Face On' plays with the idea of being in an actual relationship with the world – the world being the collective of life and it’s events – and in a moment of hopelessness I ask it how and why can it be so cruel and yet, how can I remain so deeply in love with it at the same time."

Well, you're in luck! because the band released a brand new video for a brand new song on Friday. "Buckle" is off their fifth full length record, due out April 22ns, called Helter Seltzer.

So crank it, watch the food fly, and go pre-order the album here.
