Song of the Day: March 20, 2016 - "Same House" by Hot Panda

March 20, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been a few months since Hot Panda teased us with "Other Spooky Is", the first new single from their upcoming album. And now they've got another brand new one, "Same House". Starting with a clatter of drums, the song builds to a soaring -- and ridiculously catchy -- chorus, before crashing back down.

From what I can gather, the album is called Bad Pop, and while there's no release date yet, if the rest of the album is even half as good as the first two singles, I'm hoping to hear it sooner rather than later.

Song of the Day: March 19, 2016 - "Paradise" by Emily Millard

March 19, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New Miss Emily Brown song...well, kinda! Emily has dropped the stage name and is using her own (Emily Millard) now, but that doesn't change how excited I am for new music from her.

Also announced was a future album and poetry collection titled By Heron & By Season, scheduled for release in the fall of 2016.

Emily will be touring in Germany throughout March and April, but keep an eye out for Canadian tour dates for the spring and summer!

Song of the Day: March 18, 2016 - "Join The Band" by Shotgun Jimmie

March 18, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Shotgun Jimmie released his new album today titled Field of Trampolines, produced by fellow musician Joel Plaskett.

The first single, and today's Song Of The Day, "Join The Band" premiered a few weeks back on the website of a staple breakfast stop for Canadian bands Aunties and Uncles. The song is about the joys of touring/life on the road, and many of the other songs celebrate the 'joys' of other elements, including camping!
Speaking of the road, Jimmie will hit Vancouver on June 22nd at the Lido, so be sure to mark it in your calendar.

Check out the song below and the entire album by clicking here.

Song of the Day: March 17, 2016 - "The Magician" by Andy Shauf

March 17, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Circle May 20th into your calendars, as it's the date of Andy Shauf's latest album release The Party via Arts & Crafts records.

For now we have a new single called "The Magician" (no, not a Camilo cover) which you can hear below and a gorgeous description of what is to come with this album:

“With The Party, Shauf masterfully creates a cast of memorable and unique characters. They show up “Early To The Party”, reveal secrets (“To You”) or try to reveal nothing (“The Magician”). In “a city the size of a dinner plate” everyone knew the guy who keeled over after smoking what he promised would be his last pack of cigarettes (“Alexander All Alone”). There’s the girl dancing by herself in the middle of the room, with the “Eyes Of Them All” upon her. One moment you’re dancing with someone who bears an uncanny resemblance to your ex (“Martha Sways”), and later slagging your best friend as a way of endearing yourself to his recently dumped ex (“Quite Like You”).

All of this is set to ornate arrangements of fuzzed-out guitars, string sections, clarinets and dreamy synths, draped over delicate piano, acoustic guitars and rainy-day drums. Listen in on The Party with the lead single “The Magician”.

The Party is not exactly a concept record, but it was a way for the singer-songwriter to get out of his own head. An after-party record, more like it. Or for the hangover the next day, when only Shauf’s songs can make any sense of the emotionally-charged scenarios that played out the night before. When The Party was over, Shauf had no regrets—even if its characters have more than a few. You’re invited to The Party. It’s one you’ll never forget.”

Andy's heading out on tour with The Lumineers in Europe, and then will head across Canada with the trio of case/lang/veirs - stopping in Vancouver on June 29th as part of the Jazz Festival.

Song of the Day: March 16, 2016 - "Logic Of A Dream" by Explosions In The Sky

March 16, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The Wilderness is easily one of my most anticipated albums of this year. Explosions In The Sky have not put out a proper, non-soundtrack album since '011 with Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, and if the song below is any indication, it is going to be a good one.

If you want to be excited too, just sit back, listen to "Logic of a Dream", and let the wailing guitars and pounding drums overtake you for six and a half minutes.

Song of the Day: March 15, 2016 - "Swan" by WILLA

March 15, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Ali Milner's pop outfit WILLA has released another single ahead of her debut album Criminals & Dreamers (set for May 6th), titled "Swan".

I've heard her do this one live several times and it's always captivating, and now we have a recording of it!

WILLA is currently in the Toronto/Ontario area for most of March, performing at in and around the city. And hopefully we'll get a music video from her soon as well (I know one is coming because I got to be in the background).

Song of the Day: March 14, 2016 - "Teenage Autumn Nights" by Jeremy Allingham

March 14, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Jeremy Allingham [Like A Martyr, Factories & Alleyways] is about to release a new solo record called Memory Electric this week on March 18th, with a show at the Biltmore on the same day.

We're excited to release the first single from the album, titled "Teenage Autumn Nights".

Of the tune Jeremy says: "The song's all about some of the crazy shenanigans me and my friends got into growing up out in Langley! Going to shows, driving around places we shouldn'tve (baseball fields), getting in fights (hugely ill-advised haha), an "incident" with the police and generally just being lunatics in love."

Check it out below and be sure to see the show at the Biltmore with guests Westwinds.
