Song of the Day: February 10, 2016 - "Love You Babe" by Jason Collett

February 10, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you didn't pick up the new Jason Collett album this past weekend, maybe this song will convince you.

And not only did Collett release a new video, but he also announced a tour! He'll be joined by Kalle Mattson, and his backing band will be none other than the mighty Zeus. They'll be here in Vancouver at the Fox Cabaret on April 26th, and you can check out the rest of the dates here.

Song of the Day: February 09, 2016 - "Capsized" by Andrew Bird

February 09, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While he hasn't necessarily been silent since '012's Break it Yourself, it's been a while since the last "proper" album from Andrew Bird. But just the other day he dropped the first single from his new one Are You Serious -- contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills -- due out April 1st.

"Capsized" is a bit more bluesy and soulful than you might expect from Bird, but still manages to feel familiar. I am really interested to hear the rest of the album and see the direction he takes with it.

I have been waiting so long for new Plants & Animals, and now we finally have something!

"Stay" is the first single off their new album Waltzed In From The Rumbling, which is out April 29th on Secret City Records, and I am just going to sit here and listen to it on repeat all day.

Song of the Day: February 07, 2016 - "Sacred Sites" by Well Sister

February 07, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

High fives and bonus points to Dave Thiel from For Esmé for bringing this talented artist to my attention.

Winnipeg musician Jaymie Friesen aka Well Sister released her debut album Sacred Sites in November of 2015, and a video for the title track came out last month.

The ethereal tune is set over scenes of Jaymie cutting her hair and digging into the landscape around her. Check the video out below and the rest of the EP by clicking here.

Song of the Day: February 06, 2016 - "Comes A Time" by Matthew Barber & Jill Barber

February 06, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I can't imagine how proud a parent must be to have one child grow up to be a succesful musician, but two, who made names for themselves independant from one another? That's just amazing.

As is the case for Matthew Barber & Jill Barber, who for the first times in their careers have come together to create an album. The Family Album will be out on April First, and contains a selection of originals and cover songs.

I had a sneak peek and a few of the songs this summer at the Folk Fest, and I am really looking forward to hearing more of how their amazing talents blend.

Song of the Day: February 05, 2016 - "Paradise" by Animalia

February 05, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I stumbled across this song the other day and was immediately drawn in by the dark, cinematic sound of Animalia.

The songwriter is originally from Hobart, Tasmania, but now lives in Toronto, by way of Ireland, and her upcoming album is called (dissonance). She says she wrote the album with "each song focusing on a different element of my relationship with the world around me."
"Paradise", in particular, "was written after what seemed like an endless news stream of young people losing their lives through gun violence."

The album comes out in April on Culvert Music, and I can only hope it is as captivating as this single.

Song of the Day: February 4, 2016 - Smash Boom Pow

February 04, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Smash Boom Pow are performing tonight at the Media Club in Vancouver along with Derrival and Torontonians, Modern Space (fresh off their two performances with Arkells at the Commodore) so we decided to have their song "Regrets" as today's Song Of The Day.

And I'm sure that's what you'll have if you don't check out this show.

The band has a new EP coming in May, so if we're lucky we'll hear some of the new material tonight as well. Check the song out below and be sure to head to the Media Club this evening!
