Song of the Day: February 03, 2016 - "Brother's Bothers" by Magnolia

February 03, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know Stephanie Chatman from playing violin with Jasper Sloan Yip, as part of the Four on the Floor String Quartet, or you may have heard her solo EP Compass Rose.

But now Stephanie has released the first song from her brand new project Magnolia, which also features The River and The Road's Andrew Phelan on drums, electric guitar, backing vocals, as well as Marcus Abramzik from Jasper Sloan Yip, The Matinée, and Lydia Hol (among others) on the upright bass.

"Brother's Brothers" is a warm and intimate song, about family (as you may have guessed from the title) and you can hear it below.

Song of the Day: February 02, 2016 - "DVP" by PUP

February 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's been a hot minute (2 years almost) since PUP released any new music...touring extensively and putting out awesome music videos...but we finally have a new tune.

"DVP" has been performed live by the band since 2014, and now there's a recording of it!
[For those not from Ontario/Toronto, DVP is short for Don Valley Parkway - which is mentioned in the song. Though how someone could ever do 180 on that is beyond me.]

The new album is said to be coming "later this spring", so we'll have to keep our eye out for it (and surely for more tour dates supporting it to follow). Check out "DVP" below:

February 01, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Another full length debut has been announced, this time it's Operators, with their album "Blue Wave", coming out on April 1st (no joke, I hope).

The first single, "Cold Light" premiered recently, and between that, the announcement that Wolf Parade are working on new music, and Operators tour this Spring (Vancouver stop on April 5th at Fortune Sound Club), Dan Boeckner has been busy.

Check it out below!

Song of the Day: January 31, 2016 - "Gambling Hearts" by Harrison Brome

January 31, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I came across Vancouver artist Harrison Brome via a post by his cousin Charlie on Facebook...... that cousin would be Charlie Kerr of JPNSGRLS. I was curious if talent ran in the family, and boy does it ever.

"Gambling Hearts" grabbed me instantly, and I immediately looked up the rest of his music (3 songs on Soundcloud, which are free to download!).

I'm super pumped to see where this kid goes, and I say kid because he's only 19 years old, not that you'd know that from these songs. Take a listen for yourself!

Song of the Day: January 30, 2016 - "Hey, No Pressure" by Ray LaMontagne

January 30, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Grammy Award winning Ray LaMontagne is gearing up to release his sixth studio album, Ouroboros, on March 4th via RCA Records. The album is produced by Ray and My Morning Jacket's Jim James (making it the second album I am looking forward to this year produced by James) and the first single is a little more crunchy than previous albums, perhaps solidifying his shift from acoustic folk troubadour to full-on rocker.

"Hey, No Pressure" is a slow burning jam that builds to a swirling ending, and if it's even just a hint of what's to come on the new album, I am definitely looking forward to it.

3am Playlist #31: Modern Space Guest Playlist

January 28, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

When a band is playing your city 3 times in 4 days, it's only polite to invite them to make a playlist for you!

Modern Space is on tour from Toronto and will be performing alongside the Arkells at the Commodore for their two night, sold out, stand this Monday February 1st and Tuesday February 2nd. Then after a day off (hopefully Vancouver will give them some sunshine) they're over to the Media Club on Thursday night with Smash Boom Pow, and Derrival.

We asked them to make today's playlist, including a few of their favourite Vancouver/BC artists. Click the image above to hear it, and be sure to catch them at one of their three shows!
