Song Of The Day: July 25, 2015 - "Let It Be Now" Liam Corcoran

July 25, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I think a lot of us were sad to hear the news of Two Hours Traffic's disbanding but perked up a bit when we learned that Liam Corcoran would be making his own solo music.

Well, that day has come, and his first single "Let It Be Now" from the upcoming album ROM-DROM has been released. August 28th is the date the album is due, but until now, enjoy the single, linked below.

Song Of The Day: July 24, 2015 - "Bernie" Twin Within

July 24, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Twin Within released their debut album Horizontal Lines on Hidden Pony Records two weeks back, and I've been listening to their single "Bernie" a lot lately.

They list The Beach Boys and Scott Walker as their influences, and I almost get an Alan Parsons Project "Eye In The Sky" vibe from the vocals on this song, but definitely more upbeat.
"Bernie" is apparently about Bernie Taupin, whom I definitely had to google to find out about (he collaborated a lot with Elton John). But you don't really need the backstory to enjoy the song, take a listen:

3am Playlist #5: Polaris Prize Short List

July 23, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

[CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE PLAYLIST]

As we told you last week, the Polaris Prize Short List has been announced for 2015. This year's Top 10 artists cover a WIDE range of genre's and sounds, to say the least, and I'm going to have a tough time deciding on my ballot (which is blank right now).

I decided to give you a sampling of each song in this week's playlist, but encourage you too to go through each album, and maybe you'll find something surprising.

Eight of the Ten artists nominated for the Polaris Prize are in the playlist above, but two didn't have new songs on their CBC Music pages, so I decided to add them in below with their latest videos from the nominated albums. If you haven't seen the Drake one yet, be warned, it's a strange one.

Who are you rooting for from the Short List? What was YOUR favourite album this year? Comment below!

Song Of The Day: July 23, 2015 - "Geist" LADYFRND

July 23, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

LADYFRND consisted of Peter Ricq (HUMANS, Gang Signs) and Yuki Holland, and fittingly their last EP is titled Farewell.

The 6-song EP can be streamed by clicking here, but I chose to highlight "Geist" as it was my favourite of them all for the haunting yet upbeat vocals.

Song Of The Day: July 21, 2015 "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (Theme)"

July 21, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I suppose that should be a photo of John Williams up there, but Indy will do just fine.

Why have I chosen the Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade theme, you may ask?
Because the Summer Cinema series is back and showing the film in Stanley Park tonight! Last time we tried to watch an Indiana Jones film a HUGE storm came out of nowhere and forced us all out.

Before all that, the theme would pick up here and there in the crowd and everyone would start singing along (as well as you can sing along to an orchestra). So now I've passed this earworm on to you.
Oh, and remember, ""X" never, ever marks the spot."

Song Of The Day: July 20, 2015 - "Destroy" In-Flight Safety

July 20, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Halifax band In-Flight Safety, just released their single "Destroy", in the UK and it reminded me how much I enjoy it. While it's just over 4 mins long, it definitely doesn't feel like it, and you'll find yourself hitting the replay button a few times.

They also just released a video for the song, which you can check out below. Apparently the track has been featured on both Vampire Diaries, and The Office (US). You can find their whole album, Conversationalist, HERE.

Song Of The Day: July 17, 2015 - "Done" Frazey Ford

July 17, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I think this is my song of the summer, if not everyone's new anthem. I love Frazey Ford's entire new album (Indian Ocean), but "Done" is just a masterpiece. You don't want to look at the play counts on my iPod or iTunes...

So you too should listen to this one, on repeat, all day, and then go see her perform live at the first night of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival (aka this evening). Enjoy.
