Songs of the Week: May 05 - 11, 2025

May 12, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Try a Little Tenderness” by Peter Dreams

Hot off his role in the incredible Ryan Coogler flick Sinners, Peter Dreams has released a cover of the classic “Try a Little Tenderness”.

A follow-up to his debut solo album, Peter Dreams and MOONRIIVR, the song is a perfect fit for the July Talk frontman, with a burst of soul and his distinctive vocals.

You can check out the song below, or pick up his album now, or find him in a couple songs on the Sinners soundtrack! Seriously, the movie (and the music in it) is so good, go see it when it returns to IMAX this weekend.

“The overpass” by Amy Millan

With her new album out at the end of the month, Amy Millan is sharing one more single off the album with “The overpass”

The song is a gorgeous, contemplative single looking back at Amy’s youth in Toronto. She elaborates: “When I was 22, my first boyfriend’s mom died. It was a shock, it happened fast. The night of her funeral, a group of us went over the Bloor viaduct in Toronto and a couple of us got on the ledge and walked across what could have been a deathly end. There was no protection from falling off and below is a hundred feet directly onto the highway. It was famous for suicides in Toronto until they finally put up protective wiring a few years ago. That night still haunts me with the thought of what an idiot I was. As weird as aging is, being in my 20s was a stupid time. Kissing all my friends to figure out which one was the one. It was all very unruly and I felt mostly lost. Turning 30 was the best thing that ever happened to me. I never believe people when they say “oh the good old days” so my sardonic sarcastic feeling on that notion finally made it into a lyric.”

Watch the video below, Directed by Sara Melvin, and catch Amy when she heads out on tour this fall, including a date here in Vancouver on October 20th a the Fox Cabaret!

“The Evil That You Know (Let it Go)” by Twin Rains

This is the guitar solo I needed today!

Toronto’s Twin Rains is back with more new music, hot on the heels of the release of their song “Quick Sickness”.

“The Evil That You Know (Let it Go)” was inspired by a storm, says one half of the band Jay Marrow: “This tune started as a wall of sound of guitars and drums that felt like a loud thunderstorm, so the synthy break was created to mimic the calmness of the storm’s eye. It ended up really working and now my favourite moment is when the storm crashes back in for the final chorus.”
“This song—and a lot of our work, actually—examines self-deception,”
added singer Christine Stoesser “I don’t think I’ll ever run out of things to say on that subject.”

Let’s hope there’s more where this came from!

“coloured lights” by Yawn

We’re a month out from the debut LP of Yawn, the new project from Julia McDougall, and are getting another taste with the “coloured lights”.

The new single is an upbeat dreamy synth-pop tune, and McDougall says it’s a “party song for existentialists. It’s a song dedicated to the lonely and the weary, for everyone who’s ever wondered if they might always be alone—even in a crowd. In the song we meet some familiar characters at a party; the loud guy joking and telling stories on the balcony with a lit cigarette in his hand, the best friend who knows something is wrong. Ultimately, we realize that some things never really find a resolution - you can be left questioning the same things forever and sometimes there’s nothing else you can do but dance.”

wish i could’ve is out on June 13th and Yawn will be doing a quick jaunt through BC next month, including a show on Jun 21 at Green Auto.

(Also, I am really digging the pixel art for the single!)

Songs of the Week: October 14 - 20, 2024

“The Ballad of You and Me” by Tariq

Tariq is back!

The Vancouver musician makes his return with a new style - departing from the folky sound he’s known for best. Of it Tariq says: “this project is a way to experiment with collaboration and also a heavier sound. I want to create something that resonates in its live form, in front of a big crowd at a festival, something that will be entertaining to watch and sound big and bold.”

His new band is full of familiar faces from the Vancouver music scene, including Robert Chursinoff on drums, Peter Carruthers on Bass/Keys, and Adam Nanji on Guitar.

The first single “The Ballad of You and Me” will be on a three song EP, which is slated for release mid-January 2025.

“Do Like I Do” by Peter Dreams

As a July Talk fan, I’ve been eagerly following the slow drip of songs from Peter Dreimanis’ new solo project, Peter Dreams. And I’m happy to see there’s finally an album announcement, along with the latest single!

For his solo debut, Peter is joining forces with Toronto’s MOONRIIVR, and next year will be releasing the aptly titled Peter Dreams and MOONRIIVR. The latest song off the album is “Do Like I Do”, a slow burn that builds to a chaotic wail of synth and saxophone.

Peter Dreams and MOONRIIVR is out on February 14 next year, and a month later you can catch Peter on the big screen in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming film SINNERS!

“Silencio” by Patrick Watson

We’ve got new music from Patrick Watson this week (and I’m hoping everyone reading this knows him for more than his song “Je te laisserai des mots” that went extremely viral on TikTok)!

“Silencio” is about the almost three month period of time where he couldn’t speak or sing, and the thoughts that arose during that time - “Does he talk too much?,the anxiety that comes with reliving a conversation, learning to be a better listener and the power of silence.”

The track sees him partnering up with French singer-songwriter November Ultra, who also experienced the trauma of losing her voice after her body shut down after her first tour - “I could hardly breathe and had to relearn”.

Hopefully this single being released means even more new music is on the horizon.

Songs of the Week: September 02 - 08, 2024

“ElectroComp” by Rich Aucoin

I think I might need to make this song my new morning alarm.

We’re finally getting a taste of Synthetic: Season 3, the four-part project from Halifax’s Rich Aucoin.
Like the first two releases, Rich composed the instrumental albums at on vintage synthesizers at the National Music Centre, and the Vintage Synthesizer Museum.

The track, aptly titled “ElectroComp”, was made “on a bunch of old ElectroComp synthesizers” and is a hard and driving techno song, that when I closed my eyes I immediately pictured the rave scene in The Matrix Reloaded - which might just be because no matter what style of music he creates, Rich finds a way to scratch a nostalgic itch.

You can catch Rich doing his penultimate tour of the current version of his live show on October 3rd at the Fox Cabaret.

“come on, baby! be a good girl for the camera” by Ada Lea

Last week, Ada Lea announced her new EP notes, with the brand new single, “come on, baby! be a good girl for the camera”

Her lilting vocals drive the song, that Ada Lea said she wrote “while on a very challenging tour that took everything out of me. Over the years, I’ve developed a suspicion that your skin must be made of macho steel to ‘make it’ in the industry—you’ve gotta be able to suck it up, put a nice smile on your face, and do a little dance with a twinkle in your eye. The chorus runs with that belief, in a cheeky, non-committal and playful way.”

You can pick up the notes EP on October 4th, and check out the video co-directed by Lea and Lawrence Fafard below!

“Come Save Me” by Peter Dreams

July Talk frontman Peter Dreimanis has released his second solo single under the moniker Peter Dreams.

“Come Save Me” sees Peter joined by members of MOONRIIVR for a song full of energy and swagger, that is “a foil to a deeper, more delicate truth about overconfidence and the human condition: our self-doubt will be waiting for us at the end of the ride.”

Still no word on an album from Peter Dreams, but if you’re lucky enough to be in the Hamilton area, he’s part of the incredible lineup for this year’s Supercrawl!

Songs of the Week: May 27 - June 02, 2024

“Kate Moon” by Said The Whale

Last week, Said the Whale released their 163rd song, “Kate Moon” — though members of their recently relaunched patreon may have heard it a bit sooner.

Joined by their long-time friend David Vertesi, who produced as well as played bass, the band described the new tune as “a warm hug on a cold and damp west coast day” which has been needed after the last few days here in Vancouver!

Sink into the embrace by listening below!

“Say Goodnight” by Debra-Jean Creelman

Okay, this new single from Vancouver’s Debra-Jean Creelman is STACKED with talent.

First off, obviously the woman herself, but on trumpet on “Say Goodnight” you’ve got JP Carter (of Destroyer), multi-instrumentalist Sean Cronin, and Jo Passed’s Jo Hirabiyashi! And on top of that, in the live version below, Jasmin Parkin of Mother Mother on vocals, as well as a whole horn section.

The song itself “questions whether it’s possible to maintain one’s artistic edge while being in love”, and comes from DJ’s upcoming album Ego Death, which is out on July 12th (and I cannot wait!).

“Keep Me Free” by Peter Dreams

You probably know Peter Dreams better as July Talk’s Peter Dreimanis, but last week he unveiled a brand new solo project with the first single, “Keep Me Free”.

A bit lighter than July Talk’s grittiness, the new song is a breezy summer jam that was made in collaboration with the fine folks of MOONRIIVR.

No word yet on a full album from Peter Dreams, but he will be at the Hillside Festival in Guelph this summer, so here’s hoping we hear more soon!

“Anyone Else's Eyes” by Meko Brain

Speaking of solo acts using a pseudonym that’s close to their real name: Mike O’Brien has debuted his latest project, Meko Brain.

Best known as part of Zeus, O’Brien has also worked with the likes of Dan Mangan, Bahamas, and Jason Collett (among many others) but now dropped his solo song, “Anyone Else's Eyes”.

The new single is a chill tune perfect for a warm evening, and Mike explains “I think we can all benefit from the old adage of walking a mile in someone else's shoes. It has to be possible to step back and zoom out and try to see someone else's point of view. The easiest way to adopt this mentality for me is to apply it to my immediate personal relationships. In a sort of montage way, I think I wanted to express this idea/feeling in the song.”

Have a listen below!
