Songs of the Week: June 02 - 08, 2025

June 09, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Save Your Soul” and “Say Goodbye, Tell No One” by Kathleen Edwards

Last week Kathleen Edwards graced up with not one, but two brand new singles, while announcing her next album, Billionaire. Both “Save Your Soul” and “Say Goodbye, Tell No One” are classic Kathleen jams, with soaring choruses and sharp, barbed lyrics.

The album was produced by Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson, and Edwards shared, “I decided to call the record Billionaire because the word is used in such a caustic way these days. But we should all want to be billionaires in life, to be rich in experience, friendship, purpose, and the pursuit of the things that bring us joy.”

If the new songs are any indication, I can’t wait for Billionaire to drop on August 22, (pre-save it here!)

“Little Plans” by Dust Cwaine

Vancouver’s Dust Cwaine returns with their latest single “Little Plans”, the lead from their upcoming album, Twin Lakes.

Co-written by Hotel Mira’s Charlie Kerr, the song is an upbeat, synth-rock banger, which Dust explains is “a T4T love story that celebrates the joy of trans love. I wrote it in my living room with my friend Charlie Kerr. I was excited about the new person I was seeing, and this potential for transformation and magic seemed to be all around me. I told him I was so in love that every time I saw this person, I refused to wash my hands after they left so the scent would linger. That excitement of new love, and that particular power that T4T love brings, can take the everyday minutiae of your life and transform it into something you would have never thought was possible.”

The album is out later this year, but you can watch Dust slowly twirling through some familiar Vancouver locations in the video below!

“Peter and the Wolf” by Patrick Watson

We’ve been getting a few singles and teasers from Patrick Watson, but officially have an album announcement - Uh Oh will be released on September 26th!

Little bit about the album from the press release: “The eleven new, original songs find Watson meditating on the idea of life being a series of “uh ohs”, a little phrase uttered in response to everything from childhood accidents to our most overwhelming anxieties. For Watson, it came to mind when faced with the biggest “uh oh” that a singer could endure: he lost his voice. Unsure if or when he would be able to sing again, his new album took a new shape. A collection of collaborations with friends and strangers; artists that he wanted to hear sing. Uh Oh represents a vision that Watson has chased for his entire life, the culmination of 20 years of musical exploration and lived experience that enabled him to translate the films in his mind to the sounds and words swirling in your ears.”

The new track “Peter and the Wolf” doesn’t have a collaborating vocalist, it’s an eerie and dark tune “inspired by the ghosts of New Orleans and the pitch black-ness of being in the forest in the dark”.

“Eye Of The Storm” by Georgia Harmer

Georgia Harmer has been releasing a steady stream of music this year, and now we finally get news of an album release, with the release of the title track “Eye of the Storm”.

The soft, intimate song highlights her stellar vocals, and Harmer says it’s “about the feeling of carrying the weight of someone else's well-being on my shoulders. It's about the feeling of responsibility and helplessness towards the problem of someone else's sadness. It's about emotional labour and my default willingness to take on the feelings of people around me, whether it even helps them or not. And how the weight of that can hold me back from my own life.”

Eye of the Storm is out on August 15th, and below you can check out the very mood-appropriate video — director Norman Wong with cinematography by Tristan C-M. She’s also announced a slew of Canadian tour dates, including here in Vancouver at the Biltmore Cabaret on November 22!

“Andy Magoffin” by Two Hours Traffic

I Never See You Anymore, the first album in over a decade from East Coasters Two Hours Traffic, is finally here!

The song was inspired by people and places that the band never sees anymore since they stopped touring full-time - hence the album title.
The song references Two-Minute Miracles’ Andy Magoffin, and a tavern in Sackville they used to perform at that’s now closed.

Filled with sing-a-long-able bah-ba-da-buh-ba’s and a fun guitar solo to close out the song, this one is CATCHY!

“Headcrusher” by Penny & the Pits

Penny & The Pits is the new project from Maritime musician and Motherhood bassist/keyboardist Penelope Stevens, and last week they shared a new one from their upcoming album, Liquid Compactor.

“Headcrusher” is a raucous surf-punk anthem about “trying to blame yourself for someone else's bad behaviour. But then it's also about refusing to do that anymore and just sending them out to die at sea,” says Penelope Stevens.

Liquid Compactor is out on June 27th, and of course the video is an homage to the beloved Kids in the Hall bit!

Songs of the Week: February 24 - March 02, 2025

“Gordon In The Willows” by Patrick Watson ft Charlotte Cardin

The piano on this track alone is amazing, but with the addition of Charlotte’s vocals - I got goosebumps!

Patrick Watson returns with another collaboration, this time with Charlotte Cardin, with whom he previously co-wrote a song with for her 2023 album.

His new album will be composed of song with different artists and I’m eagerly awaiting the news of it’s release date and who else will appear on it.

“Gordon In The Willows” is hauntingly beautiful with both the vocals and piano gradually building and it feels like it was written for a movie. Speaking of, the pair did a rendition of it on top of snowy Mont-Royal - which you can see a clip of by clicking here.

“On The Spot” by Two Hours Traffic

Earlier this year, Two Hours Traffic surprised everyone with a brand new song, and this week they’ve announced a new EP!

I Never See You Anymore comes over a decade after the Charlottetown group’s last album, Foolish Blood, and the announcement comes with another new single, “On The Spot”

The song is a slow burn, that singer Liam Corcoran says “was one of the first songs we started to work on once we decided that we'd write some new material. I wanted to go back to basics and write a high-energy song that would have fit into our sets back in the early 2000s. The acoustic guitar off the top, the driving rhythm section, lots of electric guitar hooks...as the song started to come together, it reminded us of the old days in an exciting way.”

Andy MacDonald adds, “Liam and I routinely exchange demos of songs we are working on, and when I first heard his demo for 'On The Spot' it reminded me, in a great way, of something that could have fit on the first Two Hours Traffic (self-titled) album. Once the full band started playing around with the song and Nick added the main guitar riff, it came together really quickly, which is often the sign of something special.”

Have a listen to the new tune below, and mark May 23rd for the release of I Never See You Anymore!

“Get Paid” by CJ Wiley

This past Friday, CJ Wiley released their debut LP, So Brand New, and to celebrate shared the new single “Get Paid”,

Co-written with Dave Monks (Tokyo Police Club) Wiley says the song takes “a tongue-in-cheek look at how expensive it is to be alive, reflecting my frustration with the relentless grind of life. It captures the feeling of being stuck in a society we’re sick of, enduring it for the sake of our loved ones, while knowing full well that we all deserve something much more meaningful.”

Check out the video, from Doran Brooks, and you can grab So Brand New now via Tiny Kingdom!

“Silarjuaq” by Maya Cook

Multidisciplinary artist Maya Cook recently announced her debut album salt, and last week released the album’s second single, “Silarjuaq”.

The energetic song is a total earworm, and Maya explains the song was written “for a friend in Igloolik who was going through a hard time. It’s a song about how despite all the bad things that happen, and the harmful things we do to others and ourselves, the world is an incredibly beautiful place-because we are alive and get to exist in it together. Silarjuaq, meaning ‘the universe’ or ‘the world’ in Inuktitut, is a declaration of that, an ode to the heartbreaking beauty of being in this world.”

salt is set for release March 21 via Aakuluk Music, and you can have a listen to “Silarjuaq” below!

Songs of the Week: October 14 - 20, 2024

October 21, 2024 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“The Ballad of You and Me” by Tariq

Tariq is back!

The Vancouver musician makes his return with a new style - departing from the folky sound he’s known for best. Of it Tariq says: “this project is a way to experiment with collaboration and also a heavier sound. I want to create something that resonates in its live form, in front of a big crowd at a festival, something that will be entertaining to watch and sound big and bold.”

His new band is full of familiar faces from the Vancouver music scene, including Robert Chursinoff on drums, Peter Carruthers on Bass/Keys, and Adam Nanji on Guitar.

The first single “The Ballad of You and Me” will be on a three song EP, which is slated for release mid-January 2025.

“Do Like I Do” by Peter Dreams

As a July Talk fan, I’ve been eagerly following the slow drip of songs from Peter Dreimanis’ new solo project, Peter Dreams. And I’m happy to see there’s finally an album announcement, along with the latest single!

For his solo debut, Peter is joining forces with Toronto’s MOONRIIVR, and next year will be releasing the aptly titled Peter Dreams and MOONRIIVR. The latest song off the album is “Do Like I Do”, a slow burn that builds to a chaotic wail of synth and saxophone.

Peter Dreams and MOONRIIVR is out on February 14 next year, and a month later you can catch Peter on the big screen in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming film SINNERS!

“Silencio” by Patrick Watson

We’ve got new music from Patrick Watson this week (and I’m hoping everyone reading this knows him for more than his song “Je te laisserai des mots” that went extremely viral on TikTok)!

“Silencio” is about the almost three month period of time where he couldn’t speak or sing, and the thoughts that arose during that time - “Does he talk too much?,the anxiety that comes with reliving a conversation, learning to be a better listener and the power of silence.”

The track sees him partnering up with French singer-songwriter November Ultra, who also experienced the trauma of losing her voice after her body shut down after her first tour - “I could hardly breathe and had to relearn”.

Hopefully this single being released means even more new music is on the horizon.

Song of the Day: September 12, 2018 - "Fever" by Klaus

September 12, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I literally said "Oh this is FUN" the second this song started...

Scrolling through my inbox (11 days ago, we are STILL catching up on all the new music!) I saw the word "supergroup", which will always make me pause. Then I read: "members of Patrick Watson, Karkwa, Galaxie", and knew I had to listen.

Klaus features François Lafontaine (Karkwa, Galaxie), Joe Grass (Patrick Watson), and drummer Samuel Joly, and was formed, as many things are, while out drinking at a bar.

They released their self-titled album on September 7th, and I've posted the track "Fever" below. I'm not sure how I'd categorize the genre (which is fine by me), but it will definitely make you dance. Take a listen:

Song Of The Day: August 23, 2015 - "Love Songs For Robots" Patrick Watson

August 23, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

A new video for "Love Songs For Robots", the title track off Patrick Watson's latest album (by the name name) was released recently.

The video was directed by Academy Award-nominated Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, and they said it was their: "attempt to create the sort of film Martians might make for humans, if those Martians had only observed us from afar."

If you watch/listen below, I'm sure you'll agree they did just that.

Patrick Watson returns to Vancouver on October 5th at the Commodore.
