Songs of the Week: March 09 - 15, 2026

“See the Light” by Whitehorse

Not only did we get a new single from Whitehorse last week, but a new album has been announced as well!

The folk rock couple of Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet released their latest single “See the Light” a gorgeous song which harkens back to the early days of the band’s romanticism, ‘with a perspective only afforded by over two decades of musical and matrimonial partnership.’

The album was inspired by Melissa holding a photo of a 19th century farmhouse and saying “Let’s make a record that sounds like this place” and will be a family affair, with their son Little Jimi playing Wurlitzer and Hammond organ on the album, and daughter Chloë Doucet opening for them on tour!

The new album All I Want Is All of It is out May 8th, and they’ll be on tour this spring (no Vancouver date yet, but crossing my fingers for one soon!)

“Hey Amanda” by Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene recently announced their first new album in over 10 years was set to be released on May 8th.
Remember The Humans will see the regular players as well as additions throughout Hannah Georgas, Lisa Lobsinger, and Feist and more.

The second single “Hey Amanda” is a groovy track (I’m partial to the horns!) that they describe as an “anthemic expression of youthful rebellion through melodic refrains, memorable lyricism, and the brash, beautiful punctuation of the sprawling group's many voices” and that “this is a song about being yourself, and how people will always question that.”

The massive tour they announced with Stars and Metric still only has one Canadian date in Toronto, but crossing our fingers we’ll be added on soon!

“Ride” (feat. GROUPLOVE) by Arkells

This past week Arkells released their fourth track from their upcoming album Between Us and this one comes with a collaboration with GROUPLOVE!

Of the song “Ride” lead singer Max Kerman says: “On its face, the song is about riding a bike in the city. That unbridled feeling of pedalling along to the song in your head.  But beneath the surface, the bike's a metaphor. When life tries to bribe you with a litany of material things, can a simple, utilitarian object like a bicycle be all you need?”

It certainly makes me dream of summer bike weather, which should be here by the time the band is in town to play their three sold out shows at the Penthouse, Hollywood Theatre, and Commodore Ballroom in May!

“Beaten To Write” by Total Fucking Darkness

Every time Total Fucking Darkness releases a new song, I just want to copy the press release verbatim, because nothing I can say will match their energy.

The trio of Torquil Campbell, Stephen Ramsay, and Tom McFall have promised to usher us back into the Void with the pulsing bass and earworm chorus of their new single, stating “Oh! You didn't think you were leaving, were you? Whether you thought you wanted it or not, you're getting, ‘Beaten To Write’.”

It’s a beautiful day out for once. You decide to treat yourself to ice cream even though you never allow yourself the indulgence because, after all, at this stage of your life it’s “a moment on the lips, and a lifetime on the hips,” but you decide to do it anyway because you went to the fucking gym this morning, after all. So there you are, feet hurting, you left the gym two hours ago and you’re still sweating and you’re asking for two scoops of pralines and cream, and you pay fucking ELEVEN dollars for it but you think “I don’t care today, it’s beautiful out and something’s got to change eventually, this bad luck can’t go on forever” and then suddenly SPLAT… the sound of your ice cream hitting the ground because you just got a low balance notification from your bank and your phone got caught in your jacket pocket as you were taking it out to check it, and it knocked the fucking ice cream out of its cone.

Fuck yeah. Beaten to write.

What surrounds the stars in the sky? Total fucking darkness.
Where can you have the most fun? In Total fucking darkness.
Who’s yer new favourite dance act? Total fucking darkness.

You may now pass.

“The Otherside” by Rise Carmine

Rise Carmine is the moniker of Toronto based, multi-instrumentalist Liam Colbert, and last week he released his latest single, “The Otherside”

The song is a trippy psyche-rock jam, with Liam explaining, “We understand and experience the world in moments, beats on a grid. All we can ever experience is right now. Even past memories or future plans are fabrications that we rehash or conjure up in the very immediate ‘now’. I can’t help but see my life in terms of periods of time (years, months, minutes, seconds) that are slowly (or quickly) ticking by. This song is about yearning to see, feel and hear what exists in the in-between, and in turn, hopefully escape the the cage of time and the very human experience of watching life tick by.”

The release comes with an incredible, seven minute one-take video, that combines “The Otherside” with another new track “Second Love”, and features a dance choreographed by Tavia Christina, danced by her and Christian Lavigne.

Have a watch below!

“I Know What You're Thinking And It's Awful (Acoustic)” by The Dears

This week, The Dears Return to Lover’s Rock with a brand new acoustic album. To celebrate (finally) being able to play shows, the band is releasing an expanded version of their 2020 album Lover’s Rock, with five new acoustic versions of songs from the album.

Natalia Yanchak says “We originally released Lovers Rock in 2020. It was an album we were, and are still, very proud of. Murray and I recorded an acoustic session just before we released the album. Again, back in 2020 we spent the day at Hotel2Tango studio in Montreal -- we put out the videos of some of these sessions, but now can finally share the audio on this deluxe upgraded version of the album, Return to Lovers Rock. It's kind of like Return to the Planet of the Apes: we can't not go back there. There's unfinished business down on Lovers Rock, so it's time for a spin off!”

The full album is out now, and you can hear the gorgeous “I Know What You’re Thinking and it’s Awful” below.

And as a side note! Check out Riley & Rochelle — a detective game about two musicians in the 90s who fall in love — co-created by Natalia, alongside Tim Sheinman.

“I’M GOOD” by Snotty Nose Rez Kids

I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Kenny vs Spenny referenced in a rap before but I absolutely love that Snotty Nose Rez Kids did it in their newest release “I’M GOOD”. (“This ain't David vs Goliath, it's Kenny versus Spenny".)

In their first new music since their Polaris Prize Short Listed album Life After, SNRK gave us a song that is “a call for anyone to focus on themselves rather than others”.

We’ll have to wait another week to find out if the duo claim this year’s Polaris Prize, but in the meantime, check out the new song below.

“Division 5” and “Leave Me As You Found Me” by Whitehorse

During their set at the Constellation Festival this summer, Whitehorse teased a couple new projects coming down the line, including a full-on country album. Now we’re getting our first look at I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying with not one, but TWO new songs.

“Division 5” features Luke Doucet singing a tale of a sad sack trying to enlist the help of Mounties to reclaim his lost love, and “Leave Me As You Found Me” features Melissa McClelland’s gorgeous voice joined by some pedal-steel.

I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying isn’t out until next year — January 13 — but you might just be able to catch some of the new songs live as the duo is on tour right now, including a show here in Vancouver at the Hollywood Theatre on October 8th.

“It’s Not Up To Me” by Hyaenas

Vancouver’s Hyaenas released their latest single last week, the 80s-inspired, synth-rock infused “It’s Not Up To Me”.

Produced by Jesse Gander, the band says the song “alludes to the fight, flight, or freeze stress response and that serving up anger can be warranted (especially when it’s towards a toxic manipulator who is the subject of this track). The choruses support the cathartic healing that anger brings, and the bridge encourages the release of letting it go.”

Check it out below, and catch an acoustic duo set from the band at Westminster Pier Park this Friday as part of the TD Play the Parks Music Series.

Songs of the Week: August 09 - 15, 2021

“Sometimes Amy” by Whitehorse

Not content with releasing one album this year, Whitehorse is gearing up to drop their second album of 2021 with Strike Me Down coming on September 10th.

And just ahead of the album’s release, we’re getting another tease with a new song “Sometimes Amy”. The song is described as “a laugh track for heartache”, with the catchy and upbeat melody belying slightly darker lyrics, with a slightly manic video to match. Check it out below!

“Swing Swing Swing” by Arkells

I’ve got all the ROMO today after a weekend of FOMO while seeing pictures and video of the sold-out 3-night stand the Arkells just did in Toronto at the Budweiser Stage. But hey, at least we got another song this week from them!

”Swing Swing Swing” is the latest off the upcoming Blink Once album (Sept 30th), and fits right in with the other singles released so far. The video is in the same jittery, sped up style that the “One Thing I Know” vid was done in, but instead of a bright No Frills, the extended band are on a plain white background. Give it a listen below!

“Hot Boy” by k-os ft, KAGE E

More new music from k-os, and this time he’s brought 16-year old KAGE E along for it. The two connected and collaborated on “Hot Boy” - a super catchy, groovy track - and their vocals compliment each other very well.

Speaking of the Budweiser Stage and my FOMO, k-os is going to be performing there with Matt Mays, and Sam Roberts Band this week. I’ll just have to listen to the new single on repeat.

“Flood (feat. Julie Doiron)” by Astral Swans

Astral Swans are back, with a brand new song featuring the Canadian music icon Julie Doiron.

“Flood” is the first single off the upcoming self titled album, due out October 8th, and Matthew Swann explains “the objective was to create an upbeat, danceable pop song, that’s slightly sinister” which… seems to be an unintended theme with the songs this week so far…

Swann continues, saying: “The song has a lot of space and throwback production nods; think Scott Walker, meets Linda Ronstadt, meets Air. Julie’s background vocals then take it to a higher plane. So musically we have all that going on, and then lyrically it’s from the perspective of this Dostoyevskian underground man, antisocial personality type, who’s literally dreaming about being the last man on earth, alone with the object of his desires. The music is all glamour, contrasted against the unglamourous lyrics about the delusions of a 4chan incel.”

“No Good” by Kandle

Last week Kandle released the fourth(!) single from her upcoming album, but this one came with some details on the release. Set The Fire comes out on May 28, and the latest single “No Good” is also the first in the Garden Sessions, an open-air series with Kandle, Debra-Jean Creelman and Kendel Carson performing acoustic versions of songs from the album.

“Am I Just Gonna Stand Here (While You Take My Girl Away)” by Whitehorse

With their album Modern Love still hot off the presses, Whitehorse has announced yet another new album to come this year! Strike Me Down comes out September 10, and it’s heralded by the (awesomely titled) “Am I Just Gonna Stand Here (While You Take My Girl Away)”. The song comes with a kaleidoscopic video that is very fitting of the dizzying, swirling 60’s tinge.

  • Kirk

“When I Come Around” by Nap Eyes

Yes, that “When I Come Around”. I love hearing cover songs, but am usually bored if it’s just a 1:1 exact copy of the original (what even is the point, in that case?). Luckily, that’s not at all what we get with this version of a Green Day classic from Nap Eyes, as the band turns the angsty anthem into a heartfelt, introspective tune.
The EP (which also features a cover of Bonnie Raitt’s Thank You) is out at the end of the week.

“Muse Needs A Wife” by Debra-Jean Creelman

Speaking of Debra-Jean Creelman, the Vancouver singer/songwriter has announced a brand new album of her own, and released lead single “Muse Needs A Wife”. The song features her vulnerable voice lilting over gorgeous strings, exploring themes of duality, or as Creelman explains: "It feels like there's a 50’s housewife and a road-dog warring it out inside of me.”
The album, Threshold, comes out July 16th, and features some familiar names like Joseph Hirabiyashi, Jesse Zubot, James Meger, Molly Guldemond, Louise Burns, and Peggy Lee.

“On & On” by Half Moon Run

The new Half Moon Run EP (titled Inwards & Onwards) is set to be released on June 18th and I’m pretty darn excited for it. It feels like from this new single “On & On” and the previous one, “How Come My Body”, that the sound of the new record might be closer to vintage Half Moon Run, which is all thumbs up from me.
Check out the spacey visuals in the video below while sitting in a sunny patch of light.

“Unsolicited Advice” by Charles Spearin

In recognition of Mental Health Week last week, Charles Spearin released a song he had been pass around among friends for the better part of the past year. Spearin wrote the words and music to “Unsolicited Advice” as a “raw, spontaneous, heartfelt letter to his two teenage kids. After recording it, and listening back, he felt it was something larger - a letter to friends and family, a letter to his younger self, a love letter from Generation X to Generation Z; basically a letter to everyone who needs it.”
Check out the video, animated by Jared Sales, below!

“Winter Is Coming In” by Alex Henry Foster

Alex Henry Foster was brought to my attention in our 3AM inbox and watching the video for “Winter Is Coming In” just made me miss live shows so much I almost cried.
Give it a view below - and click here for another one from him from the same live show called: “The Son Of Hannah”. (Both are from his most recent album Standing Under Bright Lights.)

“Honey Lungs” by Said the Whale

Despite certain… worldwide events… 2020 was a very busy year for Said the Whale. Along with frequent livestreams, the band was hard at work on a new batch of songs, with the first self-released single dropping last week.
“Honey Lungs” reminds me of the grittiness of some of the bands early songs, but with modern day production — even if I didn’t know they were working with Steve Bays (of Hot Hot Heat, Mounties, and like eleventeen other bands) I feel like I would have been able to tell just from listening — and will absolutely be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
Risk the earworm below, or check out the band’s Patreon for sneak peaks of more to come!

“How Come By Body” by Half Moon Run

Beautiful new single from the newly JUNO-nominated (for Group Of The Year and Adult Alternative Album of The Year) Half Moon Run. “How Come My Body” is dreamy and simplistic, and comes with a video that made me miss live shows and people even more. We don’t have a set date for the new album, just a “later this year” - but in the meantime, more of this please!

  • Christine

“I Wanna Make Promises (That I Can’t Keep)” by Whitehorse

Surprise! Not only did Whitehorse release a new song last week, but announced a brand new album was to come mere days later! Modern Love released Friday, and lead single “I Wanna Make Promises (That I Can’t Keep)” is a laid back, sultry number, with an early contender for lyrics of the year:

Let’s argue in Ikea
Make a scene, go home and fuck
On unassembled furniture
Fresh off the moving truck

“Parade” by Lydia Ainsworth

Ahead of her brand new album Sparkles & Debris (due out May 21), Lydia Ainsworth has released a gorgeous new song called “Paradise”. Her ethereal voice is backed by her usual electronic soundscapes, but in a departure from her previous albums, Ainsworth is also joined by live drums, guitars, and bass for this album. If the first single is any indication to how the rest of the album will be, I can’t wait to hear it.

“Starlight” by Chad VanGaalen

Two weeks ago Chad VanGaalen released another song from his now-released album World's Most Stressed Out Gardener, and I lamented the fact that it didn’t come with a music video.
Well, cut to this week, the full album is released and another single, “Starlight”, gets the signature VanGaalen music video treatment. This is slowly becoming one of my favourite records of the year.

Song of the Day: June 06, 2017 - "Die Alone" by Whitehorse

June 06, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

As we get closer to the July 7th release of the new Whitehorse album, Panther in the Dollhouse, they've teased us once again with "Die Alone".

The video for the haunting song is just the pair of Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland alone on stage in front of the appropriately empty Massey Hall theatre.

They've also announced the first leg of their tour to support the album, including a show right here in Vancouver on October 19th at the Vogue Theatre!

Song of the Day: January 23, 2017 - "Boys Like You" by Whitehorse

January 23, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Only three weeks in to the new year and I've already got what's sure to be one of my favourite songs of 2017, thanks to Whitehorse.

"Boys Like You" is a back-and-forth between two characters; the overly cocky Luke Doucet and the bitingly acerbic Melissa McClelland. The press release says This one’s not for the drunk sad bastards, but for those who have to deal with them, and I couldn't describe it better myself.

Song of the Day: December 08, 2015 - "My Babe" by Whitehorse

December 08, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

They already put out one of the best albums of the year back in February, but Whitehorse isn't slowing down. They're rolling out a brand new EP one song at a time, with videos filmed in studio, in a project that takes the band deep into the Chess and Checker electric blues of the 1950s.

In fact, the first song is a cover of "My Babe" written by Willie Dixon and made famous by the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame's only harmonica player, Little Walter. The couple brings fire to the gritty blues tune about "a woman that won't stand for her man to cheat".

The EP is called The Northern South Vol. 1, and it'll be out early next year.
