Song of the Day: November 6, 2019 - "Spirit" by Riches

November 06, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

When Young Galaxy announced their hiatus last year, I was bummed out for a number of reasons, chief among them being where/how/if I would ever hear the impactful vocals of Catherine McCandless again.

Luckily, we didn’t have long to wait, as last month McCandless announced her new solo project, Riches.

The first single, “Spirit” is darker than what you may be used to from YG, and Catherine said about writing the song: “I had been feeling like my career as a recording musician was threatened and unsustainable, and stepping into our home studio to lay down the vocal felt like it had this fear still fresh in me. Beginning to really sing it made me feel like I could run it off, fly away from it, and be totally washed over by my love of singing – completely possessed.
I wanted to create an antidote to combat that feeling of being helplessly swept away by the tides of commercialism, among other things. I had to create the thing that would drive me to unfamiliar, challenging and exciting places.”

Song of the Day: July 15, 2017 - "Spirit" by Belle Game

July 15, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Have you ever seen a band play a brand new song live, and you both love the song and hate that you can't get it immediately and play it over and over? The moment the lyrics kicked in on the brand new Belle Game song "Spirit", I realised this was one of those songs. I have seen the Vancouver band play it a few times live, and it always left me in awe, so I'm a little glad it's finally out in the world.

The song is the first single off their upcoming album Fear/Nothing, which is produced by former member of The Stills Dave Hamelin, and executive producer Kevin Drew, who also lends his voice. It's out September 8th on Arts & Crafts, but you'll be able to hear a preview this weekend at the Vancouver Folk Fest (with a showcase set Sunday evening, and workshops throughout the weekend) or while they're on tour supporting Broken Social Scene.

Song of the Day: February 12, 2017 - "Spirit" by Wintersleep

February 12, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Fresh off nominations for both a JUNO Award (Best Adult Alternative Album) and the Prism Prize (for their video for "Amerika"), Wintersleep have release a video for their song "Spirit".

According to the press release, the music video follows a middle-aged small town resident who finds himself eerily isolated from his community, a fitting accompaniment to what Wintersleep's Paul Murphy describes as a song about surviving in "a world bent on its own disaster."
