Songs of the Week: August 25 - 31, 2025

“Can I Call You in the Morning?” by The Beaches

The Beaches celebrated the release of their latest album on Friday by dropping one last single, “Can I Call You in the Morning?”

The raucous song is the album’s opening track, and lead vocalist Jordan Miller explains it was “inspired by an experience Kylie [Miller] had at the end of her previous relationship. After a couple of late nights, she would call her ex and would spew all of her frustrations regarding their relationship, and then would be immediately apologetic and take it all back. It goes out to all of the chaotic girlies out there.”

The song sets the tone for the album, No Hard Feelings, which is out now (and I highly recommend it!) You can also catch The Beaches when they head out on tour this fall, including a Vancouver stop at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena (!!) on October 25th!

“Distance” by Kylie V

Last week, Vancouver’s Kylie V released the first follow up to their acclaimed album Crash Test Plane with the song “Distance”.

The new single highlights Kylie’s incredible vocals on a slow-burn indie-rock twang, with Kylie elaborating: “I wrote "Distance" about all the things that circle around my brain constantly: memories I can't shake, anxieties, obsessions, deadlines, and the intense urge to run away from them. It's a bright, fun, twangy, catchy indie rock song that I had an absolute blast recording and arranging.”

No word on an album, but you can catch Kylie here in Vancouver when they play the Flats Fest on Saturday!

“Crazy Love” by Frazey Ford

I just love Frazey Ford’s voice - it’s so unique and lovely - and thus I got excited to see there was new music out!

“Crazy Love” is a Van Morrison cover which, along with two other covers, will be included in the deluxe re-release of Frazey’s 2014 album Indian Ocean.

Of the songs Frazey says: “I don't tend to do a lot of love songs or covers, but these are three love songs by three of my favourite artists, and I thought they made a nice collection unto themselves, and a nice addition to the album. They’re special to me as they reflect a moment in time in this space of collaboration.”

“New Light” by KINLEY

KINLEY is back with her first new track in over a year with the bright and uplifting “New Light”.

The song is instantly catchy, and the east cost singer says it’s “about coming through challenges stronger, more open, and more grateful. It’s that moment you realize the hard times didn’t break you—they helped you shine even brighter.”

Hopefully we’ll be hearing more from KINLEY soon, but until now listen to “New Light” below!

“Chicago” by Japandroids

OH HELL YES!!!

New Japandroids?! Since when?! Oh, final album? There goes my heart.

That announcement came with the first single “Chicago” from what the final album will be (Fate & Alcohol) which is to be released October 18th!

It’s such a distinct Japandroids sound, but also a full other anthem to sing along to.

I’m going to embrace this whole situation and hold on to every new song they put out.
LET’S GO!

“Marrying Me” by KINLEY

I don’t know that I’ve heard a KINLEY song that hasn’t immediately become stuck in my head, and her new single “Marrying Me” is no exception.

The indie-pop jam is about expectations vs reality, with KINLEY explaining, “Where I live I hear church bells everyday and it got me thinking about marriage and all the weddings I have played for and all the people I know who are married and all the weddings that I’ve played for and observed a lot of them didn’t work out. It also made me think about myself and how I grew up thinking that of course I would get married and how beautiful it would be but I realized I was only imagining the romance and the fabulous white dress and being surrounded by friends and family. I never imagined the reality of marriage past the glamour. That’s when I came up with the chorus of the song. My reality hasn’t included marriage and it may or may not be in the cards but it is no longer an expectation because my reality is a life filled with love and rich experience.”

The new song was produced by Juno winner Corey LeRue, and you can check it out below!

“Washed” by Grizzly Coast

Grizzly Coast wants to know what the hell am I waiting for? with her new single “Washed”.

The tune is the latest from her upcoming album, and features Alannah Kavanagh’s usual dreamy guitars combined with thought provoking lyrics, described as a “powerful rallying cry against indifference and stagnancy, urging listeners to take control of their lives and reject passivity.” The track was born from a jam session between Alannah and her husband Kyle, and “captures the essence of embracing action. The song's message is a reminder to confront apathy and take control of your life.”

Have a listen below, and keep an ear out for the upcoming album, Staying Power, due in the fall!

“The People” by GLDMTH

You probably know Ryan Guldemond from Mother Mother, but the songwriter recently unveiled his brand new solo project, GLDMTH. Pronounced “Goldmouth”, the new project will be a blend of Guldemond’s music, photography, videography, & poetry. The first glimpse of that we’re getting is the new single, a dark, piano-driven tune called “The People”

Ryan says "This is my favourite song on the album. The chords and the mood opened up a space where I felt like I could be really honest about who I am, which like everybody, I imagine, is a lot of different and contrasting people. 'A drugger, a drinker, a monk up on a hill in Nirvana.' I’ve been through all of those phases, and though I may not be living some of them out any longer, the voices of those characters are still very much alive and vocal in the darker spaces of my mind."

Check it out below, and mark down September 23 for the release of the selt-titled debut.

“Orpheus” by The Beaches

Following up on their tune “Grow Up Tomorrow” and all its summer vibes, Toronto band The Beaches have released “Orpheus”.
In an ode to the Greek mythological figure, The Beaches reimagine their lover as the ill-fated musician of the same name.

The tale goes that Orpheus was so in love with his wife that he tries to bring her back to life - only to lose her again. The Beaches on the other hand, learn from his mistake of turning back and instead, they choose to push forward.

“Sweet Oblivion” by KINLEY

Coming up on the release of her new album, KINLEY released the second single from Daylight last week, “Sweet Oblivion”.

The new song is an indie-pop jam, and KINLEY says it’s “all about summer vibes and feeling free in nature. It’s about self-acceptance and being happy where you are and having no worries in the world when you’re in paradise (aka Prince Edward Island beaches).”

Along with the new album, KINLEY has recently released a music instruction book, ‘Violin with KINLEY’. Available on Amazon, the book is designed to support her website Violin With KINLEY where you can learn to play from the comfort of your own home!

Check out the book & website now, and the new album when it’s out on November 4th!

"And (Samantha Sarty Version)” by Michael Bernard Fitzgerald

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald (aka MBF) announced this week that his 2020 LP, Love Valley, will be released in an entirely new format - featuring all female vocalists, - titled Love Valley Rearranged (Deluxe).

The original album contained a female voice for one line on each track, the rest being Michael's, but the “Rearranged (Deluxe) songs are all newly fronted with female voiced interpretations and Michael is the singular line sung per track”.

The first release is Winnipeg artist Samantha Sarty (“who plays in Living Hour and Veneer, and collaborated with US/CA group Central Heat Exchange. She also explores soundscape composition in her experimental solo project, purepulp”).

Other ladies on the record of note include Ashleigh Ball (of Hey Ocean!), Hannah Epperson, and Jaycelyn Brown (of Said The Whale) and more. Can’t wait to hear them all.

“love and anarchy” by Little Destroyer

Vancouver’s Little Destroyer is back with their second single of the year so far, the infectious “love and anarchy”.

A song about navigating love & relationships, frontperson Allie Sheldan says “I think love as a liberator is a radical idea because so much of our learned behaviour around love is to be possessive, scared, insecure. There’s a big difference between conditional and unconditional. As somebody who’s always had a really complicated relationship with relationships, it took crashing head first into a rock bottom before I did the work to learn how to love unconditionally. This song is a thank you to, and celebration of, the people (and person) who helped me get there, and still be here.”

No word yet on a new album from the trio, but hopefully we hear word soon!

“Eiffel Tower” by KINLEY

Just a warning off the top: after you listen to the latest single from KINLEY, you will have it stuck in your head for the rest of the day. “Eiffel Tower” is the lead single to the PEI singer’s upcoming album Daylight, and is an incredibly catchy indie-pop breakup tune.

KINLEY says “I wrote this song after reflecting on a breakup. I got in a fight with my boyfriend in Paris. We were surrounded by couples in love at THE most romantic landmark in the world, the Eiffel Tower. I should have known it would never work out!”

Have a listen to “Eiffel Tower” below and mark November 4th for the release of Daylight.

Song of the Day: November 10, 2019 - "Lightworkers" by KINLEY

November 10, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and former Hey Rosetta! member) KINLEY recently released a brand new song called “Lightworkers”.

The soft and gorgeous song is said to be a “call to action” about preserving a great love between two of the songwriter’s dear friends. KINLEY explains “I wrote this love song for my best friend Chrissy and her amazing fiancé Ryan. It's the story of them meeting and falling in love and becoming engaged, but also a call to all the Lightworkers (A lightworker is a special person that some people believe has an almost psychic ability to intuit what other people are thinking, feeling or need, in order to heal.) to help Ryan heal quickly from his cancer diagnosis. After a 14-hour surgery and many good vibes being sent to him, he has made an incredible recovery and they will be getting married in PEI at a later date!”
