Song of the Day: October 19, 2019 - "The Girls Are O.K." by Miesha & The Spanks

October 19, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Fresh off last year’s album Girls Girls Girls, Miesha & The Spanks are back at it with a brand new song, “The Girls Are O.K.”

I don’t think I can describe the banger of a song any better than singer/guitarist Miesha Louie did, so here’s what she had to say about the song:

“I wrote “The Girls Are O.K.” while in my third trimester this summer, expecting twins— no idea what their gender would be. At the same time I was scheduling this year’s Girls Rock Camp in Calgary. The whole thing got me thinking about these strong, weird, cool girls that I get to work with every year and watch grow, and how if I ended up with two baby girls, I wouldn’t be worried about or for them at all, because the girls from camp were already light years ahead of where I was at their age. They’re so brave and they already know they don’t have to take any bullshit— something I learned much later in life. They’re going to be more than okay – they’re going to be great.
To put a bow on it, I had this year’s Girls Rock Camp Calgary contribute backing vocals to the song, highlighting the driving force behind my inspiration. Of course, there’s still struggle, and lots wrong with gender divisions and privilege. But, it’s nice to take a step back from that struggle and look at how it’s affected the younger generations.”

Song of the Day: October 18, 2019 - "The Judge" by Alexandria Maillot

October 18, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Recently we not only got a new song from Vancouver Island’s Alexandria Maillot, but also word on a brand new album!

“The Judge” is the latest single from the upcoming release Benevolence, and features her gorgeous voice over some indie-folk-pop beats, that builds to a cacophonous finish.

The new album comes out November 15th, and you can catch her on tour next month with Louise Burns
(Except the Vancouver date, what’s up with that?!)

Song of the Day: October 4, 2019 - "This Could Be It For Me" by Hotel Mira

October 04, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

With their brand new single “This Could Be It For Me” out last week, Hotel Mira has quickly followed it up with a brand new video for the song.

The new tune has all the energy — with just a hint of darkness — you have come to expect from the Vancouver band. And from the looks of the video (check it out above) they really put singer Charle Kerr through the ringer!

It’s been about a year since the debut EP from the band, so hopefully this new song is just a tease for an upcoming album.

Song of the Day: September 24, 2019 - "Erase Any Trace" by Wide Mouth Mason

September 24, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Canadian Blues Rock mainstays Wide Mouth Mason are back with a brand new album. The duo of Shaun Verreault and Safwan Javed have released a new single, “Erase Any Trace”, which leans heavy into the “blues” of “blues rock”.

Of their dive further into the blues, Verreault says “The blues has always been one of the musical primary colours for us - the middle ten letters of our alphabet - but on this album we just dove all the way into it. People familiar with our work may be expecting a blues centric record by us to be one of those “six choruses slinging incendiary strat solos over a slow 12-bar classic” kind of records. And though I like some of those records, this ain’t that.”

I Wanna Go With You will be the band’s 8th album, and they’ve enlisted the help of Ryan Dahle (of Limblifter and Mounties fame) to produce, and throw down a little bit of bass. It’s out on We Are Busy Bodies on October 25th!

Song of the Day: September 23, 2019 - "Big Night" by Anyway Gang

September 23, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I’ll tell you this right off the bat. When I saw the headline that Anyway Gang was a new group featuring members of Sloan, Hollerado, Tokyo Police Club, Sam Roberts Band, I was certainly not expecting the members in question to be the frontman of every single one!

Sam Roberts, Dave Monks, Menno Versteeg, and Chris Murphy have come together for what can only be described as a supergroup -- or as Roberts explains, a “Frankenstein’s monster of a band with stitched-on limbs provided by Chris, Menno, Sam and Dave. The beast is brainless of course, but it’s gonna be a wild ride!"

“Big Night” is the first single of the band, and sound exactly what you would expect from the sum of it’s parts, in all the best ways. Have a listen below, and mark down November 29th, for the release of their self-titled album out on Royal Mountain Records.

Song of the Day: September 22, 2019 - "One Kind of Solomon" by The New Pornographers

September 22, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Hot off their first single from the new album called In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights, The New Pornographers have released another taste of the album with "One Kind of Solomon".

In the press release, frontman and songwriter A.C. Newman explains that, “in terms of keyboards, this record has such a Kathryn Calder stamp. There was a point where she started playing this part on ‘Solomon’ and I feel like it just changed the record. When I heard what she did with it, I said, ‘Do this on every song.’” And if you’ve been following Calder, through her own solo music or even back with Immaculate Machine, I think that’s more than evident in this song.

The new album is due September 27, via the band’s own Collected Work Records!

Song of the Day: September 21, 2019 - "Luxe" by Holy Fuck feat. Alexis Taylor

September 21, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we last heard new music from Holy Fuck, but now they’re back with a brand new single, “Luxe”.

The song was born live on-stage, starting as “a spontaneous jam session as the encore at a Luxembourg show”. From there, they enlisted the help of Four Tet to work on the song, and Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip for the vocals.

It’s a sprawling, dancey song that is perfect to crank on a day like today.

Song of the Day: September 20, 2019 - "Straight From The Heart" by Jane's Party feat. Skye Wallace

September 20, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Recently, Toronto band Jane’s Party re-released their single "Straight From The Heart" with an extra something that, quite honestly, every song needs: a shot of Skye Wallace.

The band says “this new version explores love – both the exciting and mundane – and the compromise and empathy needed to sustain any relationship. Skye Wallace is featured on this recording, providing sublime vocals, as both a lead singer and in harmony with us. We wanted to evoke the feeling of knowing that the little things in a relationship are ultimately there to teach us about the importance of love and partnership.”
