Song of the Day: September 23, 2019 - "Big Night" by Anyway Gang

September 23, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I’ll tell you this right off the bat. When I saw the headline that Anyway Gang was a new group featuring members of Sloan, Hollerado, Tokyo Police Club, Sam Roberts Band, I was certainly not expecting the members in question to be the frontman of every single one!

Sam Roberts, Dave Monks, Menno Versteeg, and Chris Murphy have come together for what can only be described as a supergroup -- or as Roberts explains, a “Frankenstein’s monster of a band with stitched-on limbs provided by Chris, Menno, Sam and Dave. The beast is brainless of course, but it’s gonna be a wild ride!"

“Big Night” is the first single of the band, and sound exactly what you would expect from the sum of it’s parts, in all the best ways. Have a listen below, and mark down November 29th, for the release of their self-titled album out on Royal Mountain Records.

Song of the Day: September 22, 2019 - "One Kind of Solomon" by The New Pornographers

September 22, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Hot off their first single from the new album called In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights, The New Pornographers have released another taste of the album with "One Kind of Solomon".

In the press release, frontman and songwriter A.C. Newman explains that, “in terms of keyboards, this record has such a Kathryn Calder stamp. There was a point where she started playing this part on ‘Solomon’ and I feel like it just changed the record. When I heard what she did with it, I said, ‘Do this on every song.’” And if you’ve been following Calder, through her own solo music or even back with Immaculate Machine, I think that’s more than evident in this song.

The new album is due September 27, via the band’s own Collected Work Records!

Song of the Day: September 21, 2019 - "Luxe" by Holy Fuck feat. Alexis Taylor

September 21, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we last heard new music from Holy Fuck, but now they’re back with a brand new single, “Luxe”.

The song was born live on-stage, starting as “a spontaneous jam session as the encore at a Luxembourg show”. From there, they enlisted the help of Four Tet to work on the song, and Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip for the vocals.

It’s a sprawling, dancey song that is perfect to crank on a day like today.

Song of the Day: September 20, 2019 - "Straight From The Heart" by Jane's Party feat. Skye Wallace

September 20, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Recently, Toronto band Jane’s Party re-released their single "Straight From The Heart" with an extra something that, quite honestly, every song needs: a shot of Skye Wallace.

The band says “this new version explores love – both the exciting and mundane – and the compromise and empathy needed to sustain any relationship. Skye Wallace is featured on this recording, providing sublime vocals, as both a lead singer and in harmony with us. We wanted to evoke the feeling of knowing that the little things in a relationship are ultimately there to teach us about the importance of love and partnership.”

Song of the Day: September 19, 2019 - "Playing With Fire" by Dan Moxon

September 19, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Dan Moxon has a brand new solo album in the works, and if the latest tease “Playing with Fire” is any indication, it’s going to be exactly what I was expecting (and hoping for!) from the frontman of Bend Sinister.

Moxon says “I came up with the melody of “Playing With Fire” on the ferry and started writing the words on my mini keyboard while watching my niece and nephews try to build a campfire. As they threw on more and more cardboard, paper and things that made the fire flare up unnecessarily, the chorus of this new song just fell into place. I finished writing it within a few days.”

The album, Lounge Singer, comes out on October 4th, and you can catch him live on the 24th at Wise Hall!

Song of the Day: September 18, 2019 - "Friday Night Lights" by Jody Glenham

September 18, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Okay, I’m a little late posting the new single from Jody Glenham, since “Friday Night Lights” has already racked up over 10k spins on Spotify. But the new single is a gorgeous, hazy tune that gives us another glimpse of her album, which is set to be out next year.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see Jody play live a couple times recently (including a session at Blue Light Studio where she played through the new album) and I am very excited to hear the results!

Song of the Day: September 16, 2019 - "Funny Feelings" by FRANKIIE

September 16, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

We’ve been getting a slow drip of new songs by FRANKIIE to tease the release of their debut full length Forget Your Head, and the latest is a witchy song called “Funny Feeling”.

The video (seen above) was shot “in 24 hours on 16 mm film in a dilapidated barn created by Jeremy Wallace MacLean, the band braved through the cold and rain (with an occasional warm up as they huddled together in a car), as they shot a video full of old school smoke machines, lasers, broken mirrors, dead birds (!) and answered the call and quintessential question everyone making a music video wants to be asked: "Anyone afraid of heights?"”

Forget Your Head comes out out on September 20 via Paper Bag Records, and on the 19th they’ll be playing their album release show at The Clubhouse here in Vancouver!
