Song of the Day: July 03, 2019 - "Saint" by Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck

July 03, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Sarah Jickling has announced her new album (The Family Curse), which will be released on November 8th, and we have a new single and video as well.

”Saint” is the first song off of the new album, which will see her exploring “mental illness within families and intergenerational trauma, and documents her childhood experiences and revelations about her family’s history of bipolar disorder.”

The video for the song has Sarah performing aerial arts, and is emotional and beautiful to watch, especially with the contrast of the tough subject she is covering. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: June 28, 2019 - "Just Walk Away" by Louise Burns

June 28, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Whatever you think your “summer jam” is, forget about it. Delete it, remove it from all playlists, and never listen to it again, because your NEW ‘song of the summer’ is the latest single from Vancouver’s Louise Burns.

“Just Walk Away” is the first single from her anticipated fourth full-length album Portraits, and is a deceptively upbeat & poppy song with a distinct tropical vibe, hiding what seem like lyrics with a darker edge.

Have a listen for yourself!

Song of the Day: June 25, 2019 - "Part Of You" by Adaline

June 25, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we last heard new music from Adaline, but she just released a brand new song, in advance of an EP called dear illusion coming out later this year.

“Part Of You” is what Adaline does best, an insanely catchy pop song with dark undertones, with a video that touches on themes of body positivity. Adaline says "When I was out looking for wardrobe for the video I got a call from the director. She said, 'you're always draped and covered in photos/videos, but this song is about being exposed. I think you should dance around in your underwear'. She was right, I'm generally quite conservative in what I wear so my initial reaction was fear but I immediately said yes." About body image, she reveals: "I knew it would challenge me in a way that would be incredibly healing. I'm not the first curvy woman in the world to struggle with body love, especially in my younger years. So when life gives a platform and an opportunity to face some past trauma you accept. The song called for vulnerability and I wanted to share that artistically in a very honest way."

Song of the Day: June 24, 2019 - "As The River Flows" by Wallis Bird

June 24, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I feel like at least once a year at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, I discover one new artist that I take an immediate shine to, and last year was Wallis Bird (who performed in a workshop with Skye Wallace).

So I was happy to hear new music from the Irish singer, in the form of “As The River Flows”, the first single from her upcoming album Woman.

The song builds in intensity -- musically and lyrically -- and if it’s any indication, the new album is going to be a force of nature.

Last week saw the team up of Winnipeg powerhouses Royal Canoe and 3PEAT for a new project dubbed RC3PO.

“Mo’ Bing” is the latest song from the collaboration, which resulted in a 4-song EP, featuring some of Royal Canoe’s distinctive beats, underneath rapping from 3PEAT’s Steve, Egg, and Dill The Giant.

Song of the Day: June 22, 2019 - "Hanging On A Line" by Begonia

June 22, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the debut full length album from Begonia, and now it’s been announced: Fear comes out September 13, and we’ve got the first taste of it with the lead single, “Hanging On A Line”.

She says the song is about “seriously falling in love in the club. Sometimes anything seems possible when you're slightly intoxicated and there's a sub bass vibrating through your body. Amidst all this there are two extra underlying messages; try to be a good person and remember to stay hydrated.”

You can also catch Begonia TODAY at 3:45 for a free show at the Vancouver Art Gallery, as part of the Vancouver Jazz Fest!

Song of the Day: June 21, 2019 - "Better Days" by The Darcys

June 21, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Okay, so I’m a little late on this new one from The Darcys, but “Better Days” is the newest in a string of singles from the band, hopefully leading up to a new album (though nothing official is announced… yet).

Sure to be a staple on all summer jam playlists, singer Jason Couse says “For us, ‘Better Days’ is about trusting that even in the darkest moments, better days lay ahead. We want everyone to know that we’ve been there, that we all face moments of sadness, fear, regret and frustration, but these experiences allow us to grow. We hope this song encourages people to keep their heads up, to stay optimistic and to take care of themselves.”

Song of the Day: June 20, 2019 - "Record Shop" by Said The Whale

June 20, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Sure this was our Song Of The Day back in April, but when you see the new video for “Record Shop” by Said The Whale you’ll know why I wanted to highlight the tune again!

After winning the Viewer’s Choice Award from the Prism Prize for their video for “UnAmerican” (which was already nuts, with 2,250 separate pieces of paper, and all done by hand), the band and director Johnny Jansen got even more ambitious…

Read about the new video for “Record Shop”, and how it was created with 129 spinning vinyl records shot in sequence and no visual effects, under the video below:

“The idea for this video was based on the first widespread animation device called a Phenakistiscope introduced in 1833 (similar to the more widely-known Zoetrope). The device was a disk with a series of pictures showing sequential phases of an animation. As the disk spins, the user would look through evenly spaced slits on another connected disk to see the pictures animate before their eyes. This similar effect can be achieved by looking at the spinning disk through a camera with the proper frame rate and shutter speed. The idea was to use this effect to create an entire music video on a 45rpm record player using a series of spinning vintage records.
Through a lot of trial and error and countless hours of experimentation, we developed a system to create a connected sequence of animated records that would actually sync up with the music. Once we figured out that process, we then had to produce 129 12-inch stickers, each with their own stroke information that would allow a machine to cut out the edges around the subjects on the stickers so we could see the unique vinyl texture on each vintage record. From there, we spent hours peeling off and discarding the extra sticker material cut by the machine. We then filmed each record at multiple angles spinning for approximately 1.3 seconds and then combined them all to create the final video you see today.”
