Song of the Day: April 2, 2019 - "Half Past Nine" by Close Talker

April 02, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I’m just going to say it, these guys are crazy fools, and I got cold just watching the video!

Close Talker decided to film a video for their single “Half Past Nine” on Vancouver Island, mid-winter, and I’m shocked they didn’t lose a few toes in the process!

It’s the first new single since 2017, and I couldn’t find anything else about an album…yet. Will have to keep an eye out, I’m sure we’ll here more soon after they’ve warmed up.

Song of the Day: April 1, 2019 - "Half-Saved" by Luca Fogale

April 01, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I couldn’t think of a good song to choose for April Fools, so instead you’re going to get a beautiful track by one of my favourite voices (AND a gorgeous video to boot).

Luca Fogale just released a new single “Half-Saved” from his upcoming record, which you can hear below, and will be in town this week on the 3rd and 4th supporting Dermot Kennedy at the Commodore Ballroom.

He’s also scheduled to perform at the Constellation Festival in July in Squamish, so you can listen to the new track and pretending you’re in the summer sunshine listening beneath the Chief.

Song of the Day: March 31, 2019 - "Les ailes d'un ange" by Partner

March 31, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Only a few more days until Toronto band Partner release their new album Saturday the 14th.

The other day, they gave us their first french song, which if you have heard some of the other songs we have shared of theirs, you might be taken by surprise.

It’s a Céline Dion inspired power ballad, with an epic guitar solo…and really, I wouldn’t expect anything less from these two.

The english version will also be on the album, which is due out on April 5th, and I implore you to come see them when they come to Vancouver next month with Wintersleep at the Commodore Ballroom on April 26th!

Song of the Day: March 30, 2019 - "Hologram" by Tacocat

March 30, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I can’t remember whom it was that introduced me to Seattle band Tacocat a while ago, but I LOVED them instantly.

Their new single “Hologram” is from their upcoming album This Mess Is A Place, which the band started writing after the 2016 election, responding “to a new reality where evil isn’t hiding under the surface at all—it’s front and center, with new tragedies and civil rights assaults filling up the scroll of the newsfeed every day. “

As complicated as that is to turn those thoughts into catchy pop songs, they definitely nailed it with this new song, and I’m excited to hear the rest. And hopefully see them in Vancouver some day soon!

March 29, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Tomorrow (March 30) Buckman Coe is will perform at his album release show in Vancouver at the Rickshaw (with some excellent people I might add - Tonye, and Erica Dee).

His new album, Gathering Storm, came out at the end of February, and we’re celebrating both the new music, and the hometown release with today’s Song Of The Day, “Price You Pay”.

The song features both of the artists performing at the release show with him, and the video shows off some mid-winter Vancouver scenery. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: March 26, 2019 - "Forever" by Leisure Club

March 26, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Just in time to coincide with the suddenly sunny weather, Vancouver’s Leisure Club have released a brand new single “Forever”

The band says the deceptively upbeat song is “about addiction and the things that drive it. What starts as an escape and coping mechanism becomes a vicious cycle, feeding the very things that started it. The theme of the song is a representation of a person’s relationship with addiction. Once present, it’s something that is carried for the rest of one’s life. Even when beaten and overcome, it lurks ready to come out again.“

Song of the Day: March 24, 2019 - "All Hands" by Tim Baker

March 24, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Another new one from Tim Baker, as we creep closer to the release date for his new album Forever Overhead.

“All Hands” is the second single to come out, and the whole album is scheduled for April 19th.

It definitely has a Hey Rosetta! vibe to it, which makes sense as the press release say it “explores connections, but is less of a lament than a thank you letter, dedicated to the people who have helped Baker throughout his career, and part nostalgic anthem about his Newfoundland home.”

Tim is scheduled to perform on June 1st at the Commodore Ballroom (after being moved from the Imperial due to popular demand!).
