Song of the Day: January 30, 2019 - "You Never Really Knew Me" by Memphis

January 30, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Memphis is back!! It's been almost eight years since we last heard from the duo of Torquil Campbell (of Stars) and his long-time friend and collaborator Chris Dumont, but last year the band started an IndieGoGo page for a brand new album.

Now we get the first glimpse of that new album with the first single "You Never Really Knew Me", which is as gorgeous as you would hope/expect from the duo.
(Unless you were a supporter of the IndieGoGo, in which case you may have already heard it?)

Check it out below, and be sure to pick up the new album Leave With Me on February 8th!

Song of the Day: January 28, 2019 - "When I Say You Are Killing Me" by Ten Kills The Pack

January 28, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Toronto artist Ten Kills The Pack has released a new song off of his upcoming EP (Force Majeure) titled “When I Say You Are Killing Me”.

The song, specifically the horns at the end, reminds me of early Dan Mangan work, but Sean’s voice and words are definitely unique.

I don’t know a date for the album release, and I’m not sure when he’ll be making his way out here, so we’ll have to enjoy his work from afar for now!

Song of the Day: January 27, 2019 - "Salvation" by Adam Baldwin

January 27, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I LOVE THIS NEW ADAM BALDWIN SONG!

This is all…

No, it’s not, I’ll give you some context. The talented man from Halifax has just released a new singled titled “Salvation”… I haven’t been able to find info on a new album, and he’s currently on tour with Matt Mays (which seems to end in Alberta … *shakes fist). So I guess we’ll just have to listen to the new track on repeat until we get more info!

Song of the Day: January 26, 2019 - "All I Want" by Broken Social Scene

January 26, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you thought maybe the reunion of Broken Social Scene was going to be a one-album affair, you may want to re-think that. The Toronto collective recently announced a brand new EP coming out February 22nd entitled Let’s Try The After - Vol 1 (which I can only assume means there are more on the way).

Speaking on the EP, Kevin Drew says “The point is to keep going. We have more to give. These songs have lived beside us and become our commencement party while continuing together. We hope you enjoy this EP for you and me.”

The first single, “All I Want”, gives me strong vibes of Apostle of Hustle, not just due to Andrew Whiteman taking lead vocals, but also the driving beat. Listen up below!

Song of the Day: January 24, 2019 - "Coquihalla" by TARIQ

January 24, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know TARIQ from Brasstronaut (or, maybe even as a CBC Radio 3 host back in the day) but this week he announced a brand new solo album, Telegrams, due out this spring from Tonic Records.

The instant-earworm “Coquihalla” is the first song from from the album, and Tariq says: "I wrote the song “Coquihalla” after reading a short story by the American writer Maile Meloy about a quirky rancher who falls madly in love with a night school teacher, though she doesn't quite see him in the same way"

Song of the Day: January 21, 2019 - "In Line For A Smile" by Ryan McMahon

January 21, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

You might recognize Ryan McMahon’s face from the Vancouver trio Lion, Bear, Fox, but he’s been working on his solo music recently and has an album coming out on February 1st called In Line For A Smile.

He will be performing at the Blue Light Sessions this Friday, January 25th, (click here for more info and tickets) and recently released the title track from the album, which you can hear below.

One of the things I’ve read about Ryan’s music is that he is “on the edges of country just enough to say he isn’t” and I think that is true of this toe-tapper of a song.
