Song of the Day: January 20, 2019 - "Rattle Your Chains" by Ben Rogers

March 1st will mark the released date for Ben Rogers new album Wildfire, which was produced by Dallas Green (and will come out via Dallas’ company Still Records).

The third single to be released from the record is “Rattle Your Chains” , which you can hear below!

We don’t have an album release show for Vancouver yet, but Ben is scheduled for some Ontario shows in March with Bahamas, so we’ll just have to wait for our date to be announced!

Song of the Day: January 19, 2019 - "Houdini" by Mike Edel

After releasing a few singles like “31”, “Go With You”, and “Challenger”, we finally have an announcement about an album (and another new song!) from Mike Edel.

Mike will release Thresholds on March 1st of this year, and go on an accompanying tour to support it (the Vancouver date is set for May 24th with a location/details TBD).

Song of the Day: January 18, 2019 - "To Love" by For Esmé

I’m pretty excited for this Saturday as it’s the first Women’s March in Vancouver that I’ll actually be able to attend - and I was just thinking about it yesterday morning when an email arrived from Mar from Toronto band For Esmé.

They’ve released a video for “To Love”, the first track on their album Righteous Woman, which I have gushed about for around 8 months + now. It seemed super appropriate for my mood (and now I’m listening to the whole album for the 100th time.)

The video was directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick, and shot on film (going after my heart again), and I will let you read the words I was sent about it:
"To Love is a visual journey exploring gaze and seeking balance between all of its contradictions. The film objectifies female cliches in order to question their validity with playfulness and sarcasm. To Love intends to create refreshing and powerful narratives within societal normalizations of femininity. For Esmé epitomizes the reclaiming of the gaze, and the video illustrates Mar Meredith’s evolution from object of male desire to principal subject of her own narrative.”

Song of the Day: January 17, 2019 - "Kids" by PUP

I think one of my favourite things about PUP songs are that so many have a good little bit, be it the chorus or just a line, that you can sing along with, or shout back at the band (or computer screen).

“Kids”, the first single off of their soon to be released new record Morbid Stuff (April 5th) has just that, AND some awesome guitar solos.

I’ve missed their last few appearances in Vancouver, but I’m determined to make it to the next one: March 29th at the Wise Hall!

Song of the Day: January 13, 2019 - "Old Soul, Young Heart" by Said the Whale

Said the Whale released yet another new single off their upcoming album, Cascadia, which you can put in your ears on February 2nd… unless you want to host a listening party, then you might just be able to snag a copy early.

“Old Soul, Young Heart” is an ode to both Dan Mangan and Ben Worcester’s father, and not only can you hear the song below, but the final episode of their “docu-series” dropped as well! Focusing on Ben (and his dog Trout) deep in the beauty and serenity of his family’s cabin on Gambier Island, you can hear him talk music, and see him show off his impressive skills with a blade.

Song of the Day: January 12, 2019 - "No Need To Argue" by Hannah Georgas

Just in time for International Women’s Day this year, Hannah Georgas will be releasing a special EP titled Imprints, which features a selection of covers from women who have influenced her over the years.

The album will feature covers from Eurythmics, Janet Jackson, and Tegan & Sara, as well as the first song off the album: “No Need To Argue” by The Cranberries, which also features Lucius.

Hannah says “The Cranberries had such an impact on me growing up and is still one of my favourite bands. There is so much emotion and realness behind Dolores O'Riordan's lyrics and in my opinion, this track is one of the most simply and perfectly put 'break up' songs. I was gutted when I heard the news of Dolores' passing this time last year. I know I don't know her but I feel like I did because she helped me through so much growing up listening to her music.”

Song of the Day: January 11, 2019 - "77-76" by Royal Canoe

Their new album Waver comes out in 2 weeks, but we’re getting another sneak peek at it with the latest single from Royal Canoe, “77-76”

The slow jam is about “seeing a storm approaching on the horizon," says Matt Peters. "The ship is beginning to rock back and forth violently, but the captain is drunk. Your last captain was alright, but this new one is an idiot. You go up on the deck and see the sky darkening fast. In spite of that, all you can do is hope the crew can rally on their own and keep the ship above water. You always find a way."
