Song of the Day: October 28, 2018 - "Run Away" by Old Man Canyon

October 28, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Only a few more weeks until Old Man Canyon’s new album A Grand Facade comes out (November 16th) and we have another new track from the album!

”Run Away” is the second release from the sophomore album, and like the first (“Good While It Lasted”) is a jam - man, I’m excited for the whole thing!

Of the track, songwriter Jett Pace say: “This song is written as a conversation between someone and their future self, a version of themselves that’s attained all they wish to be and know. It’s the inner dialogue that follows a revelation, and that compulsion to run and abandon everything to avoid real resolution."

Song of the Day: October 27, 2018 - "Howl" by Bre McDaniel

October 27, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Yesterday saw the release of Howl, the debut full length album from Bre McDaniel.

Produced entirely by female identifying collaborators, Howl was recorded both in studio and outdoors! Bre says "I don't actually remember what first sparked the idea to have field recordings as part of the production HOWL. In some ways it just seemed like an obvious and fun thing to try because all of these nature metaphors and imagery were coming through in the writing. I love nature and I liked the idea of foraging sounds from this environment and would love to explore that more - looping sounds you encounter in normal life into a beat, or collecting very intentional textures of ambient noise. There is waterfall white noise from Lynn Canyon layered in some songs, murmuration flocks of birds sounding like the ocean in others, dying embers of a fire that me and a few close friends are silently gathered around - all these very personal impressions are embedded in the songs. Also I love hearing that in other people's music, when people sample organic sounds for beats, etc, there’s just something more alive about it."

Check out the video for the title track below, and be sure to head to the Railway Club on November 7th for her album release show!

Song of the Day: October 26, 2018 - "Jungle" by Hotel Mira

October 26, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

When I saw the inaugural show by Hotel Mira earlier this year, they played one song that stood out to me that didn’t end up on their debut self-titled EP.

That song was “Jungle”, which luckily was just released as their brand new single! And even though it’s coming out on the first rainy Vancouver weekend in some time, it’s a summery jam that evokes love and adventure. Check it out below!

The new album from Royal Canoe, Waver, is slowly creeping up to it’s release day of January 25th in 2019, and I’ve been loving all the singles being released from it.

The latest is this awesome slow jam below called “Peep This”, which hopefully we’ll get a video we can peep eventually as well.

Hopefully it is just the right vibe for your Thursday morning.

Song of the Day: October 24, 2018 - "Dance" by Tim Baker

October 24, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Did you get realllllly realllllly sad when you heard that Hey Rosetta! was hanging up their hats
Well maybe you heard when Tim Baker was touring around doing small, intimate shows?

So, good news! Tim is releasing a solo album sometime in 2019, and has given us a song titled “Dance” from said venture.

He’s going to be touring with Bahamas in the fall, but that’s all out east, so we’ll have to wait to get a proper tour for now. Check the song out below, filmed live for a mini-doc (5 songs to come total) called The Side Door Sessions (click here for the intro to the series).

Song of the Day: October 21, 2018 - "Chasing the Fall" by The Darcys

October 21, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Okay, 1) that is my new favourite band promo photo, and

B) everyone always talk about “summer jams” but the new song from The Darcys is the perfect “autumn jam”.

“Chasing The Fall” gives off slow-jam vibes and is almost the perfect marriage of the “old” Warring-era Darcys and their current synth-infused incarnation. One half of the band Wes Marskell says, “I like the images of Zinfandel by the pool, casinos and heart-shaped jacuzzis, as they all have the kitsch of a love story in a bad movie. However, there’s an unlikeliness to the events, hitting the jackpot or rain in Palm Springs, and you get the feeling you’re letting someone take you on a ride that’s full of chaos. Once you’ve done it, you’ll do anything to do it again.”

No word yet on a new album, so until then check out the new song below!
