Song of the Day: October 16, 2018 - "The Storm" by Ellevator

October 16, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Really digging this new track from Ellevator off of their self-titled album (out now).

The dramatic yet dance-able song (“The Storm”) is fully of fun synth and a funky bass line. It took a couple listens for me to hear it all as I found myself really focusing in on the vocals but then just closing my eyes and spacing out to it. Definitely a jam.

The Hamilton band is out on tour with Dear Rouge right now, but they aren’t heading out west at the moment.

Song of the Day: October 15, 2018 - "Good While It Lasted" by Old Man Canyon

October 15, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I am TOTALLY into this new song, “Good While It Lasted” by Old Man Canyon.

This slow jam is exactly what I needed this Monday morning after a busy weekend in Kelowna at Break Out West.

OMC has a new album announced, A Grand Facade, but we’ll have to wait until November 16th for it. In the meantime, enjoy the first track below!

Song of the Day: October 14, 2018 - "UnAmerican" by Said the Whale

October 14, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

When I saw Said the Whale play some new songs at Skookum this summer, I predicted one of the new ones they played would be their next HUGH hit. And while I’m sure they decided to release the very same song as their next single long before I said anything, I am 100% going to take credit for this, if I can.

Jokes aside, “UnAmerican” is going to ear-worm its way into your head immediately, especially the ‘oo-hoo’ of the chorus. Tyler says the song is “about a socialite protagonist named Kevin who goes through life letting the music he’s listening to influence everything he’s doing. Through it all, he just wants to be a good person. Around the time I was writing the song, I kept hearing the label ‘UnAmerican’ being given to people who were upset and bewildered by Donald Trump’s antics. And so I started to equate ‘UnAmerican’ with ‘good and decent' because bewilderment seems like the most normal response to someone as unhinged as Donald Trump.”

No information yet on the new album, but word has it it’s just about ready to go, so I hope we’ll be hearing more sooner, rather than later.

Song of the Day: October 13, 2018 - "Hallucinations" by Colyn Cameron

October 13, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Colyn Cameron (of Wake Owl) has released his new solo album titled Sad & Easy (out yesterday) and we also have a new song and video from the EP!

“Hallucinations” reminds me of vintage Wake Owl, and a bit of Coconut Records (circa Nighttiming) - which is a very good thing in my opinion.

Check it out below, and for more on the new album, click here.

Song of the Day: October 12, 2018 - "American Screams" by Arkells

October 12, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The tracks from the Arkells upcoming album Rally Cry are coming out fast and furious, the latest being “American Screams”.

Now you could listen to the song in the video below, or you could call 1-888-426-8856, listen to it AND leave the band a message.

The new album is due out October 19th, but we might get one more single to come before that, so stay tuned! You can also likely hear the new music if you’re watching Hockey Night In Canada, as the boys have been all over the Leafs games (including throwing jerseys into the crowd at the arena)!

Song of the Day: October 11, 2018 - "Gathering Storm" by Buckman Coe feat. Caleb Hart & Tiny House Warriors

October 11, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

“Gathering Storm” is the first single, and title track, from Buckman Coe’s new album set for release on February 22, 2019.

According to Buckman, the song has roots in social activism:
"This song was inspired by my work with the Tiny House Warriors (click for more info). It celebrates the gathering community of Indigenous and non-Indigenous land and water protectors here at home and around the world."

Song of the Day: October 10, 2018 - "Cold In The Summer" by Dan Mangan

October 10, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

We’re still a few weeks away from the release of More or Less, but Dan Mangan is giving us another tease with the new video for “Cold in the Summer”.

Dan says the song is the “quarter-life crisis. The mid-30s father feeling simultaneously conflicted about having retired the wild young adventurer within and also overwhelmed with appreciation for the privilege and good fortune he has been afforded. I literally got a cold in the summer and thought: ‘This is dumb, I’m getting soft’.”

Check out the video below, and head over to Dan’s Instagram on the 28th for a live variety show hosted by Charlie Demers featuring “acoustic renditions of album tracks, special guests, prize giveaways, comedic performances, game show questions about Dan, and a lot more.”
