Song of the Day: September 19, 2018 - "Make It Out" by Alexandria Maillot

September 19, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last week we got the first tease of the upcoming album from Alexandria Maillot.

“Make It Out” is a slow-burner that builds to an intense finish, and she says the song is about “the struggle of an artist trying to find their way back to their creative lifeline.”

Check it out below!

Song of the Day: September 18, 2018 - "Canoe Song" by Mounties

September 18, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Just when you thought a band named Mounties couldn’t get any more Canadian, they release “Canoe Song”.

The mega-combo of Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle, and Steve Bays are back with a tease for their upcoming album with a song I guarantee will be lodged in your brain for the rest of the day.

Song of the Day: September 17, 2018 - "Just Fear" by Dan Mangan

September 17, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

After his song “Troubled Mind” came out in June, I’ve been waiting for the new Dan Mangan album to be announced, and now we have it!

More or Less will be released on November 2nd via Arts & Crafts, and we also got another single, this one called “Just Fear”, which came with a lyric video, which you can see below!

Song of the Day: September 16, 2018 - "Mid-Tempo Drama" by We Are The City

September 16, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

What better way to get ready to see We Are The City tonight at the Vogue (as a part of the Westward Festival) than with their new song “Mid-Tempo Drama”.

The aptly-named slowburner features distorted vocals, and a video following singer Cayne Mckenzie driving from dusk through the night until… well, you’ll have to watch it to find out.

Also, rumour has it that they’ll have some vinyl of the upcoming album At Night at the Vogue tonight, well ahead of the October 5th release date.

Song of the Day: September 15, 2018 - "Doom" by Dilly Dally

September 15, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I kind of feel that someone who calls themselves "KirkOfDoom" on social media should be writing about a song titled "Doom", but here I am.

Toronto's Dilly Dally released this new song last week (I told you, we're still catching up on all this new music saturation), and since then their LP, Heaven, has been released (Sept 14th) and they've headed out on tour.

But don't worry, you haven't missed them live in Vancouver yet. They'll be here on October 29th opening for Fidlar at the Vogue Theatre.

Song of the Day: September 14, 2018 - "Simple Dude" by Tokyo Police Club

September 14, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New song and video from Tokyo Police Club from their forthcoming album TPC (out Oct 5th!).

"Simple Dude"'s video was filmed by singer Dave Monks during the album's recording process and was animated by Anne Douris. As a photographer, scratching up negatives just hurts to see, but the animation is super fun, as is the song.

The band comes to Vancouver to play a two-night, sold-out stand at the Fox Cabaret on Oct 29 and 30th with Fleece.

Song of the Day: September 13, 2018 - "The Light" by Begonia

September 13, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Dim the lights and get ready to groove to the latest single from Begonia.

“The Light” is about “feeling like I’m over the casual dating and party culture that dominated my early 20s. In a deeper sense, it’s about growing up and coming to terms with what that growth and transition means to me as a woman. It also questions the expectations that are put upon women in general and how exhausting it can be to try and live up to them. We are told in many ways by many people to be some Hollywood version of gentle, to be more beautiful, to be soft but not too soft, to change our bodies but to be happy with the way they are, to be agreeable, to make ourselves desirable to the opposite sex and ultimately not to take up too much space while doing it. It’s all very confusing and frankly impossible to keep up with. I want to defy those ‘rules’ and I want to encourage others to do the same. I want to inspire women / people in general to take up as much space as they want while feeling empowered enough to be whoever they are in this very moment.”

Catch Begonia on tour with Royal Canoe - in Vancouver on Tuesday (18th) at the Fox Cabaret!

3am Playlist #43 - Westward Festival 2018

September 12, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in 3am Playlist

The second annual Westward Festival kicks off this weekend, with names like Blood Orange, Kali Uchis, Honne, Angel Olsen, Rhye, and lots, lots, LOTS more throughout venues like The Vogue, Biltmore, Rio Theatre, Fox Cabaret, the Rickshaw & others.

So I thought I’d throw together a little playlist of some of the artists & shows I’m either looking forward to, or would recommend checking out. From the internet phenomenon Poppy to We Are The City previewing some new material; from Odds playing their seminal album Good Weird Feeling in full, to hometown heroes Louise Burns, Hannah Epperson, & Jordan Klassen; plus Canadian treasures like Chad VanGaalen, Andy Shauf, and METZ.

Find the full list of shows & buy tickets from their website here, then check out the playlist below and hopefully I’ll see you at one of the shows around town!
