Song of the Day: September 12, 2018 - "Fever" by Klaus

September 12, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I literally said "Oh this is FUN" the second this song started...

Scrolling through my inbox (11 days ago, we are STILL catching up on all the new music!) I saw the word "supergroup", which will always make me pause. Then I read: "members of Patrick Watson, Karkwa, Galaxie", and knew I had to listen.

Klaus features François Lafontaine (Karkwa, Galaxie), Joe Grass (Patrick Watson), and drummer Samuel Joly, and was formed, as many things are, while out drinking at a bar.

They released their self-titled album on September 7th, and I've posted the track "Fever" below. I'm not sure how I'd categorize the genre (which is fine by me), but it will definitely make you dance. Take a listen:

Song of the Day: September 11, 2018 - "Aftermath" by Royal Tusk

September 11, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Let's get loud on a Tuesday morning!

Edmonton, Alberta band Royal Tusk released a new song recently titled "Aftermath". It's the first single from their upcoming EP: TUSK II. (Out October 26th).

No word on a tour to support the new album, but I'm sure there will be much to follow this.
Turn your speakers up!

Song of the Day: September 10, 2018 - "31" by Mike Edel

September 10, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Mike Edel released a new song on the last day of August (the 31st) called "31" and describes it as a "30s is the new 20s inspired anthem". (I buy that! *ahem*)

It's a super catchy folk-pop song, that will have you tapping your foot and the chorus earworm-ing into your brain.

Mike will be playing the Westward Music Festival on September 15th with Close Talker at the Biltmore!

Song of the Day: September 09, 2018 - "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Dom Fricot

September 09, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Two things. First, it's Dom Fricot covering Meatloaf. How could you NOT want to listen to this?!?

Second thing is something of a PSA about the song itself. I see a lot of people still confused about what "that" is, asking "What won't Meatlof do for love?" But the answer is IN the song. Each verse he says two things he WOULD do for love, and then a third thing he would NOT do. So... just take a listen!

Song of the Day: September 08, 2018 - "Labor Drive" by Jim Bryson

September 08, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

With the backlog of songs, we missed Labour Day with this one, but I am irrationally annoyed that the song title is missing a 'u' - what's with that Jim!?

Jim Bryson released a new song "Labor Drive" last week from his upcoming album Tired Of Waiting - which you won't have to do for much longer as it will be out on September 14th!

The video features close ups of friends in a backyard eating chicken wings, so this ain't for the vegans...check it out below!

Song of the Day: September 07, 2018 - "Ola Volo" by Matt Mays

September 07, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Get your ears warmed up to see Matt Mays tonight at Skookum (and Skookum After Dark) with this acoustic version of "Ola Volo".

The song comes off the upcoming album, Twice Upon a Hell of a Time... which is, as you may have guessed, is a full re-imagining of his previous album, Once Upon a Hell of a Time...

Mays says "Once Upon a Hell of a Time... is a Saturday night record, and this version is for the hangover on Sunday."

Check it out below, and hope to see you in Stanley Park!

Song of the Day: September 06, 2018 - "Down" by Dead Soft

September 06, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Gabriola Island band Dead Soft released a video for their song "Down" last week from their forthcoming album New Emotion.

The video was filmed on the island with a VHS Camera (good lord, I remember using those in high school and having to cut the tapes together) - which aesthetically fits very well with the song.

The band is heading out on a big tour starting this October with The Dirty Nil, and will be in Vancouver on November 3rd at the Biltmore Cabaret.

Song of the Day: September 05, 2018 - "Nobody Rules You" by Danny Michel

September 05, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Danny Michel has slowly been releasing songs off of his upcoming album White & Gold - "Born In The Wild" was first, and inspired by the March For Our Lives movement, "The Red Fox" and "Purgatory Cove" were next.

The album comes out on October 12th and will feature six songs total, including the three above.

In the meantime, he's also released a stripped down, reworked version of an older song, "Nobody Rules You" that multiples schools have performed (and sent him videos of) as a sort of new anthem for them. You can see it below, and keep an ear out for more new music!
