Song of the Day: June 22, 2018 - "Just Here With My Friends" by The Darcys

June 22, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Your 2018 Summer Jam is here, and it's courtesy of The Darcys, with a little help from Leah Fay (of a little band you may have heard of called July Talk).

The aptly named "Just Here With My Friends" is a bit of a subversion, about two people meeting the the club and not hooking up, and continues the energetic, dancey vibes from their last album, Centerfold.

Check out the karaoke styled lyric video below!

Song of the Day: June 16, 2018 - "Troubled Mind" by Dan Mangan

June 16, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you've been following Dan Mangan on the social media lately, you probably noticed a lot of pictures with the flame emoji pasted over peoples heads, and the words "Troubled Mind".

That would, of course, be the lead up to his brand new single, an incendiary and dancey new track that is absolutely going to be lodged into your mind after the first listen. For both its catchiness, and its lyrical timeliness.

Dan says: "Troubled Mind is about the struggle to maintain any kind of mental equilibrium in the day-to-day as we are bombarded with fake news, sensationalized swipe-culture and increased access to the woes of the world. As the inflation of urgency increases, so does our capacity and appetite for it. It might also be my most dance-able song, and I wanted to indulge that whim with the lyric video. I thought it would be funny to see people whose body language was in complete contrast to the lyrics - both in denial of the troubled mind, as well as in defiance against it."

And if you want to send him flame-headed pictures as well, he's all for it: "Some folks have been DM'ing or posting their own photos and videos with their heads on fire, or maybe their dog's head on fire, or their cat, or a picture of Oprah. I think it is VERY VERY FUNNY. So please feel free to keep doing that."

Song of the Day: June 15, 2018 - "I Lit The Fire" by Jack Garton

June 15, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Longtime fans of the East Van music scene might remember Jack Garton from Maria in the Shower, but now he's back with his second solo album, Love You Over Time, out June 29th.

"I Lit The Fire" is the raucous first single, and Jack says it's "heavily influenced by the rock 'n' roll that I grew up listening to," says Jack. " I love that dog-eared roll-call kind of delivery in Chuck Berry's songs, it's a form of classic American poetry. 'Johnny B Goode' starts out with that great image of the hut way up in the hills. I thought "what if someone came across that old hut, got a fire started and made it cosy again?""

Check out the video below, filmed at WISE Hall, which is also where his album release show will be, on June 30th!

Song of the Day: June 14, 2018 - "Everything Moves" by Fond of Tigers

June 14, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Vancouver's Juno-nominated Fond of Tigers just released a brand new video for their song "Everything Moves", which you may know from their 2016 album Uninhabit.

The video was made by cmyk Productions, who have done great videos for loads of Vancouver acts, and Director Josh Richardson says “For Everything Moves we were quite enamoured with the idea of creating a world in miniature and finding an interesting way to create environments that played with paradoxes of scale and seriousness. The structure of the song gave us freedom to treat the project a lot more like a short film than a traditional music video.”

The seven-and-a-half minute long song weaves through three movements, which works perfectly for the narrative of the video. Check it out below, and catch them as part of the Jazz Fest, at the Drip Audio Night on June 29th at The Imperial

Song of the Day: June 12, 2018 - "Creature of Habit" by SAVVIE

June 12, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been a few years since we heard any new music from SAVVIE. But after helping her fellow local musicians through Tiny Kingdom artist management, she's ready to return with a brand new song.

Savannah Wellman says "Everybody has their vice, and “Creature of Habit” begs the question –  is that a bad thing? Is it worth fighting? Sometimes it most definitely is, but sometimes we need to hold on to what makes us happy."

Check it out below!

Song of the Day: June 11, 2018 - "True Rocker" by Monster Truck

June 11, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Monster Truck released a single from their upcoming album (True Rockers, out September 14th), and it lives up to it's name: "True Rocker".

It's the second release from the new LP, the first of which was "Evolution", which I wasn't a huge fan of (I've never agreed with so many YouTube comments before!), but the latest song stays true to the Monster Truck that I know.

It's a jam, and a great one to start your Monday morning off with!

Song of the Day: June 08, 2018 - "One Day Left" by Stars

June 08, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The best Stars songs make you feel like you've just been punched right in the emotions, and their latest, "One Day Left" is no exception.

Coming a week ahead of the next leg of their tour (including Victoria on Monday and here in Vancouver at the Vogue on Tuesday), the song is a bittersweet tale about the end of a relationship, with the band saying:

“The last 12 hours you spend with someone you love might as well not exist. You are looking at a ghost. Maybe you have fucked a hundred times, maybe you just met. But if you are in love with them, goodbye hits like poison. You are in the hotel room. You know it's almost over. You know it has to be. The city rages on outside. But in there lying next to them with all your clothes on and your bags packed, listening to them breathe, time stops. Why won't the city have some heart and stop while you say goodbye? This song is for everyone who has a fucked up love affair this summer. It might not feel like it now, but....one day you'll sit in a bar somewhere alone and realize; the pain was worth it.”

Check it out below, and hopefully see you at the Vogue next week!

Song of the Day: June 07, 2018 - "Baby" by Hotel Mira

June 07, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

More new tunes from Hotel Mira!

The latest single is called "Baby"...it reminds me of something (maybe The Zolas?), but I can't quite put my finger on it. It might just be something from their back catalogue! What do you think?

Happy Thursday, take a listen below:
