Song of the Day: June 06, 2018 - "Fade To Black" by Born Ruffians

June 06, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Born Ruffians' album Uncle, Duke and The Chief is one of my favourite albums so far this year (and in this Polaris Prize cycle), and the band just released a video for the song "Fade To Black".

It's made up of footage from the band's recent cross-Canada tour (including shots from the Vancouver stop...I can tell by the lighting and the clothes), as well as some...rather creepy shots of the band. You'll have to take a look below (and try to avoid motion sickness from the found-footage style of shooting).

Song of the Day: June 01, 2018 - "Throwback" by Jim James

June 01, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is gearing up to release his third solo album, Uniform Distortion, on June 29. But before that, we get another tease with the second single, "Throwback", and I don't think I can say anything about the song better than what Jim James himself says:

"I wrote this song doing pretty much what you are probably doing right at this very second: scrolling thru social media. It struck me as SO wild - how, as you scroll back in time through someone's account, you watch their face grow younger...but as you do this, REAL TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!! The clock is ticking...instead of doing good work or creating love or taking a walk in nature, I am here STARING AT MY FUCKING PHONE!!!! ha ha ha. Don't get me wrong - social media is an amazing tool...but I think we should look at it more like a tool, like a hammer you pick up for a little while to do a job, and then you PUT IT DOWN. You don't sit there and keep hammering away or else pretty soon your entire world would be destroyed and fall apart! And I feel like that is exactly what is happening right before our very eyes to this precious real beautiful human-filled earth. So lets WAKE EACH OTHER UP PEOPLE! Lets stand up against injustice and use this tool of social media to fight for peace and love and equality! Let's throwback for a minute, but try and live in the NOW for a better future. Thanks for listening."

Frazey Ford released a cover of the Funkadelic song "Can You Get To That" so this is a perfect time for me to tell you that she will be one of the Headliners at this year's Khatsahlano Festival (the lineup for which was announced the other day).

Start your Friday with some folky-funk and have an excellent weekend!

Song of the Day: May 23, 2018 - "A Strand of Blue Stars" by Frog Eyes

May 23, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The good news is, Frog Eyes released a brand new album last week called Violet Psalms.

The bad news is, it is going to be the last ever Frog Eyes album.

Along with the new album, on Friday the band released a brand new video for "A Strand Of Blue", featuring Mercer's distinctive haunting voice soaring over the sprawling indie rock.

The final tour includes a stop here in Vancouver at the China Cloud this Saturday, and I hope to see you there.

Song of the Day: May 22, 2018 - "Too Close To Love" by Yukon Blonde

May 22, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

As we get closer to the release of Critical Hit, Yukon Blonde is teasing us with yet another new song from the album.

Inspired by Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being, the pulsing 80's tinge of "Too Close To Live" is more proof that it might be their most eclectic album yet. Check it out below!

Song of the Day: May 18, 2018 - "You Amaze Me" by La Force

May 18, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Okay, stay with me here. La Force is the new solo project from Ariel Engle, that spun out of AroarA, which consisted of her and her partner Andrew Whiteman, who is also the Apostle of Hustle and one of the 42 members of Broken Social Scene, along with Engle.

Got it? Doesn't matter, because all you need to know is that the "You Amaze Me" is a great song. A love song written for Whiteman, the song highlights her enchanting voice, and lies almost directly between the haunting electro-pop of AorarA and the lush indie rock of Broken Social Scene. Have a listen for yourself below!
