Song of the Day: January 10, 2018 - "Born This Way" by Shred Kelly (Lady Gaga Cover)

January 10, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Shred Kelly covering Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" in the middle of a snowy field in Fernie is exactly what I needed to hear today.

The cover was by request from Beaver Brae Secondary School who donated to Music Heals 'Covers for the Cause' campaign.

Also, now I can remind you that the band will be here on March 31st to play The Cobalt!

Song of the Day: January 09, 2018 - "40 Numbers" by Hannah Epperson

January 09, 2018 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A little over a year ago, Hannah Epperson released a beautiful album called Upsweep, and now we're getting ready to hear the second half of that project, with the brand new album Slowdown.

Like its predecessor, each song on Slowdown comes in two distinct flavours: the stripped down minimalist version (Iris) and the ethereal pop-fuelled version (Amelia).

Check out the first single from the album, "40 Numbers" right here and get ready for the full album on February 16th!

Song of the Day: December 05, 2017 - "Christmas Alone" by Skye Wells

December 05, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Side project of Half Moon Run, Skye Wells has also released a Christmas song titled "Christmas Alone". The band is made up from HMR members Devon Portielje and Conner Molander, and the moniker Skye Wells is a combination of Portielje and Molander’s middle names.

They're asking for people to make a donation to the Red Cross - and upon making a donation, they will receive a download to the new seasonal track. Have a listen here:

Song of the Day: December 04, 2017 - "They Don't Make Them Like That Anymore" by Great Lake Swimmers

December 04, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Great Lake Swimmers have released a new 4-song holiday EP titled They Don't Make Them Like That Anymore and below you can listen to the title track.

In the song there is a line that says "Where do your thoughts go, at the first snow. Mine go to the Township of Wainfleet, Ontario." This is just east of my hometown in Ontario (Tony went to the same high school that I did), and it's just south of where my parents live now. All are very, very, small towns (or townships, or hamlets) and it definitely made me smile.

You can listen to the entire EP on Spotify (it's also on YouTube).

Song of the Day: December 01, 2017 - "Another Log On The Fire" by The Darcys

December 01, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I refuse to let Christmas music into my ears until December 1st, and my inbox was filling up with originals from some of my favourite Canadian bands.

Today I present The Darcys' original xmas song "Another Log On The Fire", super sexy and makes you want to cozy up next to the Yule Log (Channel).

Happy December!

Song of the Day: November 21, 2017 - "Astrid" by We Are The City

November 21, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you're even a casual reader of this blog, you've probably read me rave about:
A) We Are The City, and
2) VIOLENT, the incredible feature film made by the band a couple years back.

If you weren't lucky enough to see the award winning film -- written & directed by the band along with longtime collaborators Amazing Factory -- now's your chance as it'll soon be available to snag on DVD and Blu Ray, as well as all the streaming sites, along with a fancy vinyl version of the score, composed by... you guessed it, We Are The City.

You can check out a hint of that below with the song "Astrid", the theme for the character of the same name, and you can preorder the film and soundtrack riiiiight here.

Song of the Day: November 17, 2017 - "We Fight" by Dashboard Confessional

November 17, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I'm not going to lie, when I got the email the other day saying Dashboard Confessional will be coming to Vancouver in February (21st at the Commodore) I definitely shouted "Oh my god!" out loud.

The band has been touring in the states and I've been eagerly anticipating Canadian dates...and on top of that annoucement they also released a new song called "We Fight" and a new album Crooked Shadows, that will be out via Dine Alone Records on February 9th.
Have a listen to the new single:
