Song of the Day - October 26, 2017 - "Strange Clouds" by Hillsburn

October 26, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

My favourite new discovery at this year's Vancouver Folk Fest was the Haligonian band Hillsburn, so I've been keeping an eye (ear?) out for new music from them since the summer.

Now we have "Strange Clouds", the first single from their upcoming EP The Wilder Beyond, due out next February. It's an intense song, and Rosanna Burrill's vocals might just give you goosebumps, so check it out below!

Song of the Day: October 14, 2017 - "Scarlet Fever" by Skye Wallace

October 14, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you've been following the "Queen of Dark Folk" you may have heard "Scarlet Fever" already, but now Skye Wallace is officially releasing the badass song as a single.

She says "I wrote Scarlet Fever about a love story set in the Yukon. After a winter apart, Scarlet is arriving in the Dawson City harbour by boat and her lover awaits on land, petrified with uncertainty over the state of their devotion. The song’s energy evokes the messy turmoil of love and lust, and the music video, directed by Nathanael Vass, reflects the jittery, sexy, maddening thrill that comes with it.”

She's spot on about the jittery madness, as the video is slightly unsettling, in all the best ways. You can check it out above, or just listen to the song on soundcloud below.

Song of the Day: September 25, 2017 - "Hold On" by Leisure Club

September 25, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Guys, I'm freezing cold...how is it 40 degrees in Ontario and I have a scarf and a jacket on at my desk?

"Hold On" by Vancouver's Leisure Club landed in my inbox a few minutes ago, and I closed my eyes and tried to pretend I was floating in that raft pictured above, in the sunshine...and possibly, for a brief moment, I was there.

The band's (self-titled) debut record comes out on November 17th - keep an eye out! - and they perform on October 6th at the Waldorf.
