Song of the Day: September 15, 2017 - "Mansplainin'" by Nice Horse

September 15, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I really feel like I shouldn't be the one to clarify what this song is about...

Anyway, one week ago, the four ladies of Nice Horse released their debut full length called There Goes the Neighbourhood, which includes this tune, "Mansplainin'" (it's not a single, just one of the highlights of the album).

After giving that album a listen, what I do feel confident in saying is that Nice Horse is to country music as Eagles of Death Metal are to rock. In the sense that, you can tell they really love the genre, but at the same time are not over-serious about it. They've placed their saddle right on that line between sincerity and satire, and doing a great job of it.

Song of the Day: September 14, 2017 - "Hungry Teeth" by The Wild Romantics

September 14, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I've said it before, and no doubt I'll say it again: dead centre on the spectrum between July Talk and Whitehorse lies The Wild Romantics.

"Hungry Teeth" is their newest single and, as you might expect, features the voices of Aleisha Kalina & Evan Miller dancing together with a laid back vibe.

No word yet on a new album, but hopefully this is the precursor to one out soon.

Song of the Day: September 13, 2017 - "Figure It Out" by The Matinée

September 13, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If The Matinée ever decides to give up on this music thing, they might just have another career lined up, if the new video for "Figured It Out" is anything to go on. Well, half of them anyway, as it features the band as patrons and proprietors of a diner, along with guest vocalist (and Light Organ label-mate) Emily Rowed.

My only problem with the video? Surely Chef Geoff Petrie should be wearing some sort of hair- and/or beard-net?!?

Song of the Day: September 12, 2017 - "The Day Passed and the Sun Went Down" by Jasper Sloan Yip

September 12, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been a while since we heard anything new from Vancouver's Jasper Sloan Yip, but it was worth the wait.

"The Day Passed and the Sun Went Down" is a gorgeous song, with an equally gorgeous video to go along with it, that follows Jasper down to Oregon to view the recent total solar eclipse.

Jasper says that one the new album Post Meridiem, “Each song on the album follows the passage of the sun. The first six songs are a narrative strung together, flowing into each other like night and day.” I can't wait to hear it on October 27.

Song of the Day: September 11, 2017 - "Uh Oh" by Jessicka

September 11, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

How can you not immediately fall in love with a song that not only begins with "I want to punch your fucking face"... but then escalates from there?

"Uh Oh" is the latest video from Jessicka, and the title track to her new EP, out October 13 on Light Organ Records. And just a warning, it'll be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Song of the Day: August 31, 2017 - "Archipelago" by Shred Kelly

August 31, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's always fun watching a Canadian band go from writing songs about the town they grew up in, to writing songs about towns they tour in around the world, and the "stoke folk" band from Fernie, Shred Kelly, have combined those two sentiments in their latest release.

The new song is called "Archipelago", and tells "the story of a night spent in the archipelago near Stockholm, Sweden where we had recently visited on our last European tour. We spent a night in a cabin by the sea on the coast of a European country but we couldn't believe how similar it was to Canada; drawing similarities to Northern Ontario. By the time we had left, we had seen a moose, the northern lights, and had been struck with the realization that ‘it was not all that different in the archipelago’."

Also, if you watch the video, there's a brief clip of a karaoke version of this very song, and I am really hoping that was a real thing they are going to release.

Song of the Day: August 30, 2017 - "Undoing A Luciferian Towers" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

August 30, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Get ready for the most intense seven minutes and forty seven seconds you'll experience today with the brand new song from Godspeed You! Black Emperor. "Undoing A Luciferian Towers" is off their new album Luciferian Towers, which is out September 22, and nothing I can say will be better than the statements the band themselves made, so...

About the album, they said "this, this long-playing record, a thing we made in the midst of communal mess, raising dogs and children. eyes up and filled with dreadful joy – we aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward.  we recorded it all in a burning motorboat."

And for the song itself: "look at that fucking skyline! big lazy money writ in dull marble obelisks! imagine all those buildings much later on, hollowed out and stripped bare of wires and glass, listen- the wind is whistling through all 3,000 of its burning window-holes!"

Check it out below, on Bandcamp!

August 29, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I've been eagerly anticipating new music from The Rural Alberta Advantage for a while now, and now we get a taste with a fantastic animated video for the first single "Brother"

The song is off their upcoming album The Wild, which is due out October 13, and they'll be touring with Yukon Blonde (what a pairing!) including here in Vancouver at the Commodore on November 24!
