Song of the Day: June 29, 2017 - "Cadaverine" by The Ruffled Feathers

June 29, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been three years in the works, but we're finally hearing new music from The Ruffled Feathers.

"Cadaverine" is the first single off their upcoming Hand-Me-Down Centuries, which they started working on in late '014! The song is as charmingly dark as you would expect from the chamber-pop band, with singer Gina Loes saying in the press release:

"Cadaverine is the chemical that releases from dying organisms that our brain immediately recognizes as the smell of death. Our trumpet player Andrew [Lee] is a chemical engineer and studies air pollution and the chemicals that damage our ability to breathe. The song 'Cadaverine' reflects on the immediate, primitive awareness of death. This actually isn't the darkest song on the album, it’s just the most obvious. If you really want something dark listen to 'Sea of Hesitation' or 'Only 25'. 'Wood Buffalo' and 'How Many Days' are upbeat but ultimately heartbreaking."

Take a listen below, and get ready for the rest of the album on July 28th!

Song of the Day: June 28, 2017 - "Stay Happy" by Broken Social Scene

June 28, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

FOURTH time's a charm!

Broken Social Scene released another in a string of singles from their upcoming album Hug Of Thunder and with it (FINALLY) came a Vancouver concert date - October 21st, at the Commodore, with The Belle Game!

The new song, "Stay Happy", starts off jazzy and then goes into an almost Mother Mother-like song, then the big horn section starts. It's different, and slightly all over the map, but I dig it. Check it out:

Song of the Day: June 26, 2017 - "Old Heads" by Chad VanGaalen

June 26, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Chad VanGaalen is back with a song that will be looping through your ears all day. "Old Heads" is the first single off his upcoming album Light Information, which is due out September 8th on Flemish Eye.

The song is a "sci-fi space anthem" about the never ending cycle of new technology replacing the old, through VanGaalen's unique filter. Check it out below, and definitely make sure to catch him on tour, including a stop here in Vancouver on November 9th at the Biltmore!

Song of the Day: June 25, 2017 - "When The Levee Breaks" by Harrow Fair

June 25, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

If you haven't heard Harrow Fair's cover of the Memphis Minnie song "When The Levee Breaks" (which they recorded live at Revolution Recording in Toronto), let it haunt you this Sunday morning!

The band, made up of Miranda Mulholland (formerly Great Lake Swimmers) & Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players), still haven't made it out to Vancouver for a show (that I've seen), but I'll definitely be there when they do!

Song of the Day: June 23, 2017 - "Creature Comfort" by Arcade Fire

June 23, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

We're just over a month away from the recently announced album by Arcade Fire (Everything Now - out July 28th), and we have a second single from the band.

Where the first song ("Everything Now") definitely had a disco-ABBA vibe to it, "Creature Comfort" leans more towards the 80's with it's heavy synth sound, but features lines describing social pressures men and women face and the pain that comes with it. (Check out the lyrics to get more in depth!)

Oh, and if you were unaware, the band will be performing in Vancouver on October 14th at the Pacific Coliseum.
