Song of the Day: June 23, 2017 - "Creature Comfort" by Arcade Fire

June 23, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

We're just over a month away from the recently announced album by Arcade Fire (Everything Now - out July 28th), and we have a second single from the band.

Where the first song ("Everything Now") definitely had a disco-ABBA vibe to it, "Creature Comfort" leans more towards the 80's with it's heavy synth sound, but features lines describing social pressures men and women face and the pain that comes with it. (Check out the lyrics to get more in depth!)

Oh, and if you were unaware, the band will be performing in Vancouver on October 14th at the Pacific Coliseum.

Song of the Day: June 21, 2017 - "Wild Card" by Cold Specks

June 21, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Cold Specks has released a new song from her forthcoming album (no title yet, and it's due later this year), called "Wild Card".

Despite what I hear in my head (THIS) every time I hear read the words Wild Card, the song is slow and beautiful in true Cold Specks style, and "was shaped by selflessness and the strength of refugee women."

She will be performing in Toronto tomorrow as part of NXNE, before heading to Vancouver for the Vancouver Folk Music Festival weekend.

Song of the Day: June 20, 2017 - "This Time" by Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck

June 20, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Sarah Jickling (and Her Good Bad Luck) is finally set to release her solo debut, after teasers over the last few years.

The album, When I Get Better, will be released on July 14th, and will document her mental health issues, exploring relationships and friendships alongside the struggles she is vocal about in both her music and writing.

Check out the live version of "This Time" below, and keep an eye out for the debut!

Song(s) of the Day: June 16, 2017 - "Privilege” & “We Called It Love” by Stars

June 16, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You know it's going to be a good day when you wake up to not one, but two brand new songs from Stars.

"Privilege” shows off Amy Milan's beautifully haunting vocals, while Torquil Campbell takes lead on “We Called It Love”, with their voices joining perfectly for an instant-classic Stars Heartbreaker.

The pair of songs tease an as-yet-unnamed album out sometime later this year, with the band announcing: “We're back! We have a new album. It was recorded in Montreal and Connecticut with the great producer, Peter Katis. We love him and thank him for being there for us. It's our first with our friends at Last Gang. We made this record for ourselves, for our kids, and for you. And we are so happy and grateful that you're still listening to our music.”

Song of the Day: June 14, 2017 - "Fatal Gift" by Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton

June 14, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's been ten years (really?!) since the last time we heard from Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Since then Haines been a little busy with her band, which you may have heard of... Metric?

But now she's given us a "Fatal Gift" with a new album due out September 15, called Choir of the Mind. The song features the same beautiful piano and haunting vocals of her last solo albums, but also breaks down into a swirl of frantic loops. Check it out below!

Song of the Day: June 13, 2017 - "Fussin'" by Royal Canoe (feat. Begonia)

June 13, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you are in search of a total jam for this summer, look no further than Winnipeg. That's where you'll find "Fussin'" the new song from Royal Canoe, which also features the lovely voice of Begonia (aka Alexa Dirks, who you may know from Chic Gamine).

Singer Matt Peters says "The track is about a couple going through a little spat. They're both trying to get their way at the other's expense - pushing buttons and playing games… Of course they make up in the chorus and get back on track.”

You can catch Royal Canoe playing a free show at David Lam Park on July 2nd as part of the Jazz Fest. I assume Begonia won't be joining them, but she will be a part of this year's Vancouver Folk Fest!
