Song of the Day: March 22, 2017 - "The One 2" by !!!

March 22, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Before you listen to the new song from !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk) make sure you have enough roon to get up and dance.

"The One 2" is the first single off their upcoming album Shake The Shudder, out May 19th. It features a rotating cast of singers, including Cameron Mesirow (Glasser) and Molly Schnick (of Out Hud), Lea Lea, Meah Pace, and Nicole Fayu. And if this first track is any indication, it's going to be incendiary.

They'll also be going on an extensive tour, including a stop here at the Fox Cabaret on June 27th.

Song of the Day: March 21, 2017 - "Miscarriage" by Said The Whale

March 21, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Don't let this song bum you out too much, it is very beautiful even though it's heartbreaking (read some of Tyler's words on the song by clicking here).
"Miscarriage" is Said The Whale's latest single, released ahead of the new album (As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide), which is out on March 31st.

The band has been sending music out for listening parties across Canada (I'll be attending one tomorrow), and their tour for April is getting busy. Make sure to get your tickets for the show at the Vogue on April 29th here in Vancouver.

March 18, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Rose Cousins has released another single and video, "White Flag", from her new album Natural Conclusion which is out now. The song is a slow, sad but moving song with beautiful piano, and the visuals in the video pair perfectly.

She will be performing here in Vancouver tomorrow night at the Wise Hall - click here for more information!

"Swirl" is the perfect name for the latest single from Vancouver's I M U R, because as soon as you hit play, the soulful, sensual song swirls around you like an embrace.

It's off their album Little Death, which will be out March 24th, and celebrated by their album release show this weekend, the 18th, at Celebrities.

Song of the Day: March 13, 2017 - "City Slickers & Country Boys" by Lisa LeBlanc

March 13, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Check out the post-apocalyptic video for the Lisa LeBlanc rager, "City Slickers & Country Boys". The black & white video (more of a short film, really) was directed by Émile Lavoie and follows a man searching for his son among a zombie outbreak.

The album Why You Wanna Leave, Runaway Queen? came out last year, and is up for a JUNO under Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. You can also catch Lisa touring Canada, including March 25th at the Biltmore (you'll find me there!)

Song of the Day: March 10, 2017 - "Stay For Real" by Young Galaxy

March 10, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Yesterday Young Galaxy released a brand new single called "Stay For Real", put out in reaction to, well, a lot of what is going on in the world today. The haunting song features Catherine McCandless' ethereal voice  encouraging everyone to fight on.

They're releasing it independently, and partnering with Plus1 so all net proceeds from the sale of the song go to defending the rights of the marginalized through PIVOT (Canada), ACLU (USA), and W.A.V.E (EU). The band said in their press release: “We can no longer stand idly by and rely only on the people who shape the world for us culturally and politically. We must stay true to ourselves and feel the courage of our convictions in the face of polarizing political and personal views. But most of all, we must show empathy, compassion and love - even when faced with increasing existential threats, and fear and hostility. This song is a statement of intent, as we enter a new era, to hopefully serve as a reminder to ourselves of what our responsibilities are as artists in this troubled time.”
