February 11, 2017 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

As we get closer to its March 31st release, we get another taste of the new Lydia AInsworth album, Darling of the Afterglow.

"Afterglow" is a rich and absolutely haunting song, with a vaguely creepy video to match. Check it out below, and make sure to catch her on tour, including a Vancouver date at the Fox Cabaret on May 4th.

Song of the Day: February 09, 2017 - "Wicked Game" by Harrow Fair (Chris Isaak Cover)

February 09, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I've heard so many covers in my life and the really good ones take a song, keep the essence of the original, but make it their own, and did Harrow Fair ever nail this one.

The duo of Miranda Mulholland (formerly of Great Lake Swimmers) and Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players), have created their own version of Chris Isaak's classic "Wicked Game" and recorded it live at Toronto’s Revolution Studio.

If "Western" was a genre this would fit right it. I could see it being played behind a scene of Westworld or Deadwood (and the imagery in the video put together for the song below accentuates that). Give it a listen!

Song of the Day: February 08, 2017 - "Ballad Of The Dying Man" by Father John Misty

February 08, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

A week ago we got the first taste of Father John Misty's new album Pure Comedy (April 7) - click here to hear the song/see the short film for "Pure Comedy".

The latest song "Ballad Of The Dying Man" is a simple, yet beautiful song that builds itself up to a raucous crescendo at the end with a gorgeous choir performing alongside the band.

Additionally a video for "Two Wildly Different Perspectives" was also released, which you can also check out below.

Song of the Day: February 07, 2017 - "Heaven" by Said The Whale

February 07, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

More new music from Said The Whale!

The band released a new single yesterday titled "Heaven" (listen below) from their upcoming album As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide, due out on March 31st.

The song is a eulogy to Ben Worcester's friend and neighbour Ron Strand (read more about the song on Consequence of Sound) and if you look at the track list it's not the only sorrow-filled song the band has to come. Somehow it remains upbeat, despite its subject matter, which I feel will be a theme throughout the new record - finding the happy within the sorrow. Take a listen to "Heaven" below and you can pre-order the album by clicking here.

Song(s) of the Day: February 05, 2017 - "This Old Dog" & "My Old Man" by Mac DeMarco

February 05, 2017 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Mac Demarco has a new album coming out on May 5th, and instead of just releasing one single this week, he gave us two!

"This Old Dog" (also the name of the new album) and "My Old Man" are the first two songs on the album. Both are very mellow, acoustic mixed with synth, and definitely melancholy.

Give the tracks a listen, and if you're at Coachella, in Toronto or Montreal, or the states and Europe, you'll be seeing Mac this spring and summer - here are the current tour dates.
