Song of the Day: December 07, 2016 - "Kick" by Your Boy Tony Braxton

December 07, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Your Boy Tony Braxton is back with a new video for the song "Kick".

Much like the album Adult Contempt itself, the house-party-dance-circle video was inspired by 80s and 90s; "[Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam’s] “I Wonder If I Take You Home" video was the main inspiration. Also Janet videos,” says Shad, the man behind YBTB. “I like how the retro-vibe and playfulness of the song/video play alongside lyrics about desiring to mature.”

Check it out below, and if you're in Toronto, make sure you catch him opened for Tokyo Police Club tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday at the Mod Club!

Song of the Day: December 06, 2016 - "Fall to Pieces" by Matt & Kim

December 06, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you ever have the chance to see Matt & Kim live, you better do it. Unless you hate dancing, running around, high energy, and booty shaking. And that's just the duo themselves.

Get a taste for yourself in this compilation of the band's 2016 live shows, set to "Fall to Pieces" off their newest EP, We Were The Weirdos.

Song of the Day: December 05, 2016 - "Spend My Day" by Mobina Galore

December 05, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last Friday, Winnipeg’s Mobina Galore released a brand new EP Singles & B-Sides.

"“Spend My Day” is our favourite song on the Singles & B-Sides EP so it was a clear choice to make this our first video. It was a creative collaboration between ourselves and Chris Gaudry (videographer) and was filmed at four locations in our hometown of Winnipeg, MB. The weather has been fairly mild which allowed us, in November, to capture the outdoor visual we were looking for and not freeze! We’re extremely happy with the way this video turned out and hope the storyline sparks some emotion in everyone who watches it." says the duo of Jenna & Marcia

So if you need something to jolt you awake this morning, just crank the volume for "Spend My Day"

Song of the Day: December 03, 2016 - "Ógeðsleg" by Reykjavíkurdætur ft. Kylfan

December 03, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's my last day/night at Trans Musicales 2016 and this evening is the band I've been waiting to photograph: Reykjavíkurdætur.

Reykjavíkurdætur (which means Daughters of Reykjavik) is a collective of 20 female rappers from Iceland, whose lyrics focus on gender, politics, violence and sex. They rap in Icelandic, but you can catch some english every now and then, specifically the f-bombs and some slang words.

I'm not sure how many of them are making the journey to Rennes, but I'm beyond excited to photograph them and see them perform, even if I don't understand most of what they're saying!

Song of the Day: December 01, 2016 - "Golden Age" by Yuksek

December 01, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

By the time you're reading this, I'll have officially arrived in Rennes, France for the 2016 Trans Musicales Festival!

I figured since I was going to be discovering new music this weekend, I'd share some with you all. Tonight is the first night of the shows at the main festival site Parc Expo and one of the artists I'm most excited to shoot is Yuksek.

Hailing from France (shocker) Yuksek's sexy disco-esque tunes will definitely have me dancing and if you listen to this at 3:10pm today, I'll be shooting the show live! Have a listen to "Golden Age" below, and for a few more tunes, check out his artist page.

Song of the Day: November 30, 2016 - "Solidarity" by Bill & Joel Plaskett

November 30, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A few years ago, Joel Plaskett brought his father Bill on tour with him, and now the two have joined forces again for a brand new album.

Solidarity is out February 17 on Pheromone Recordings, and you can get your first listen to the title track below. The song mixes Bill's traditional folk sensibilities with Joel's acclaimed rock & roll.

Joel says:  “I wanted a song Dad and I could sing together that connected our individual journeys and our personal politics. The word ‘solidarity’ came to mind and didn't leave.”
