Song of the Day: November 14, 2016 - "That's The Way I Walk" by Tommy Hawkins

November 14, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know Thomas D'Arcy from the band Small Sins, or his own solo albums, or being a pretty prolific producer.

You may know Hawksley Workman from supergroup Mounties or, you know, being Hawksley friggin' Workman.

Well, seemingly out of nowhere the pair has teamed up for a brand new project called Tommy Hawkins, and dropped the first single, "That's The Way I Walk". It's off a six-song EP called Amy, which comes out at the end of the week (Nov 18), and pretty much demands being cranked. Check it below.

You can hear the 4 track EP below now, and be sure to mark December 9th in your calendars for the live finale. Taking place at the Fox Cabaret, you can hear tunes from DJ, as well as other Railtown Session artists: Johnny 99, Rob Butterfield, and Sarah Jane Scouten.

The vinyl will also be released that night, so it's sure to be a good evening!

November 11, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It's a Ned Flanders-themed metal band called Okilly Dokilly. Their first single is called "White Wine Spritzer" (spritzer... spritzer... spritzer...) off the album Howdilly Doodilly.

That's all you need to know.

Song of the Day: November 10, 2016 - "Picturing Love" by July Talk

November 10, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

July Talk just released a brand new video for "Picturing Love", which is perfect because their new album Touch has been in HIGH rotation for me as of late.

The director of the video said: “Picturing Love was born out of a discussion with July Talk about the effect of modern technology on relationships. There is a sense that the plethora of different screens we use to try to feel connected, actually have the opposite effect. They either distort reality, giving us a pornographic version of romance, or worse they become a mirror, showing us only narcissistic images of ourselves.” He continued, “I pictured a relationship. Two people staring at each other, but between those two people are layer after layer of disorienting screens. These supposedly connected individuals are actually separated by social media, television, pornography and the vast internet. At the end of the video, the two characters turn and for the first time see each other with no screen, between them. They were in the same room the entire time, but distracted by each others "image." Something I think we can all relate to.”

And if you haven't seen July Talk live, you HAVE to catch one of their two shows at the Commodore later this month, on the 23rd and 25th. Seeing them live is the sonic equivalent of being kicked in the teeth, if being kicked in the teeth was an immensely pleasant experience.

Song of the Day: November 09, 2016 - "Runnin' Away" by Rykka

November 09, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Tomorrow night Rykka will be back in Vancouver performing songs from her new album Beatitudes (released Nov 4) at the Biltmore, and hopefully it will include today's Song Of The Day.

"Runnin' Away" is the latest single from the album, which Rykka had been working on for quite a while, so I'm excited to hear the new material live.

Song of the Day: November 08, 2016 - "For The People" by Monster Truck

November 08, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

How very appropriate for today that we give you the new single/video from Monster Truck that is politically focused, right as America is heading to the polls.

Hopefully they get the message from it we don't have He Who Must Not Be Named in charge down south. Have a listen to "For The People" and get back to your TV sets.

Song of the Day: November 07, 2016 - "Queens" by Her

November 07, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's my birthday and I'll choose the Song Of The Day if I want to!

A week from today I'll be in Seattle to finally see Her again live. It's been almost a year since I caught them at the Trans Musicales festival in France for the first time, so I'm stoked to be able to hear them and the new music.

If you have the desire too, head to The Crocodile on November 14th in Seattle or if you're sticking to Vancouver (hopefully they'll come visit here soon) take a listen to the new song "Queens" below.

(PS Come to Karaoke at the Cobalt for my birthday tonight and sing me a song!)

Song of the Day: November 05, 2016 - "The Drugs" by Mother Mother

November 05, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

New Mother Mother!

It's been quite a while since we've got some new music from the band (I heard some of it at NXNE in Toronto over the summer). The new single (and video, below) "The Drugs" reminds be over older songs from the band like "My Baby Don't Dance".

Word is, the new album will be out in early 2017, so keep an ear out!
