Song of the Day: October 22, 2016 - "Utopia" by Austra

October 22, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Katie Stelmanis, who you know better as Austra, is back with the first glimpse at her third full length album.

Future Politics is said to be her most ambitious album yet, which will be “a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia,” says Stelmanis, “Not just hope in the future, but the idea that everyone is required to help write it, and the boundaries of what it can look like are both fascinating and endless. It’s not about ‘being political’, it’s about reaching beyond boundaries, in every single field.”

Get a taste of that with the first single "Utopia" and pick up the album January 20 from Pink Fizz Records.

Song of the Day: October 21, 2016 - "Sad But True" by David Vertesi

October 21, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sometimes when I see a song with the same name as a popular song, a small part of me hopes its a cover. Especially if it's something as unlikely as David Vertesi covering Metallica.

But, probably for the better, that's not what this "Sad But True" is. The song is off his album Sad Dad Cruise Ship, which is not only the albums name, but his self-appointed genre of music, and Vertesi just released a brand new video for it.

Keep your eyes peeled for famous Vancouver locales like the Biltmore, and famous kitties like Gary.

Song of the Day: October 19, 2016 - "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" PUP cover of Phantogram

October 19, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I have to admit I hadn't heard the original song by Phantogram, but since I love everything that Pup does, I knew this had to be good, and I was right.

Check out the band covering "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" below, and be sure to get your tickets to come see them when they're in Vancouver live on November 23rd, with Meat Wave, at the Cobalt.

Song of the Day: October 18, 2016 - "Storms" by Louise Burns

October 18, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Has it really been three years since the last full length album from smoky singer-songwriter Louise Burns??

That will change in a few months with the just-announced Young Mopes, following up '013's The Midnight Mass. The album was produced by Burns herself, and the first single is an upbeat song with darker undertones, "Storms".

Check it out below, and be sure to mark February 3 on your calendar, when the album comes out via Light Organ Records.
