Song of the Day: August 15, 2016: "Valentine" by Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck

August 15, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Sarah Jickling has often been very open about where her art comes from. The latest single from Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck called "Valentine" was first released on World Bipolar Day, which was no coincidence, and the new video which was released last week also comes from a personal place.

She says on her Facebook page, "This video was inspired by the reflection I saw in the mirror when I was in the hospital after an overdose. I want to show you all both parts of me, because they are both me, and I love both of them. And for those of you who are in the same place as me... you deserve love no matter how crazy you are. <3 "

Song of the Day: August 12, 2016 - "What Becomes" by Boreal Sons

August 12, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Calgary's Boreal Sons have just announced their sophomore album You & Everyone (which will come out on September 30th), and with that comes a new single, "What Becomes".

The new album, which was recording on Protection Island here in BC, doesn't have any guitar on it at all, so as you'd expect, the new song is synth-heavy, with a focus on their deep and meaningful lyrics.

You can catch the band on October 18th at the Biltmore here in Vancouver.

Song of the Day: August 10, 2016: "San Diego, 1988" by Darcys

August 10, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A few months after giving us a "Miracle", Darcys have not only released the second single from their upcoming album, but given us some album details as well!

Centerfold will be out November 4 on Arts & Crafts, and the new song "San Diego, 1988" continues the sound from "Miracle", putting more focus on the 'pop' part of their alt-pop with dancey grooves and a synth-laden chorus.

You can also check them out live tomorrow and Friday, where they'll be at the Commodore opening for AWOLNation.

Song of the Day: August 08, 2016 - "Blackbird 2.0" by Kinley & Lonely Kid

August 08, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

You may recognize the face of today's artist from her work with Newfoundland's own Hey Rosetta!, but KINLEY has also been working on her solo album.

For today's SOTD, she teamed up with Lonely Kid for a remix of her song "Blackbird", and put out a sweet little video of them biking around while she sings the song.

You can pre-order her album by backing it on her Pledge Music campaign - click here.

Song of the Day: August 07, 2016 - "Sometimes" by IsKwé

August 07, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last year I was enamoured by the song "Nobody Knows" by as artist I wasn't familiar with, Iskwé. Now she's released a brand new song, "Sometimes", which according to her:

“This song came after a pretty tough breakup. I had been trying my best to make things work, but sometimes you get to a point where you need to call a spade a spade and let go. Besides, every album needs a good breakup song, right?”

The song has her powerful voice soaring over the piano and frantic beats with the same barely-contained chaos of a tumultuous relationship.

Iskwé will also be on tour this fall, but the closest she's coming to Vancouver will be Powell River at the Sunshine Music Festival. But hopefully, she'll have time to stop for a show here, too.

Song of the Day: August 04, 2016 - "Blow The Bass" by Lowell

August 04, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Lowell has released the second song for her upcoming EP, Part 1: Paris YK, out on August 26 via Arts & Crafts.

The new song is titled "Blow The Bass" and is one of 3 songs (the last one being called "West Coast Forever"!) on the new record. The new record is a reflection on her time spent living in the Yukon Territory, and the latest track is a synth-y, danceable track. Have a listen below:
