Song of the Day: July 15, 2016 - "Feel Like A Man" by Snowblink

July 15, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I have been eager for new music from Snowblink for a while now, and the Toronto/LA duo of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman have delivered.

"Feel Like A Man" is a brand new song off their upcoming album, Returning Current. It comes out September 9th on Outside Music, and is "an unflinching study of human relationships – to self, to other, and to Other, and to the threat or actuality of losing those unrepeatable prizes."

Song(s) of the Day: July 12, 2016 - My Peace River by Miss Quincy & Twin Peaks

July 12, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

My Peace River is an EP of songs performed live on the banks of the Peace River by Miss Quincy & Twin Peaks.

The project was started to build awareness of both the current threats towards an endangered region of the province, and the people who live there, with the intent of building awareness of the endangered river valley where they grew up.

You can follow along with the hashtag #mypeaceriver, and check out the video below better explaining what the project is, from the musicians and residents themselves. Then head on over to their website to listen to and/or buy the EP, where all the proceeds from sales will be donated to RAVEN Trust's Join The Circle campaign to help the Treaty 8 First Nations fight the Site C dam.

Song of the Day: July 11, 2016 - "Magic Bullet" by My Morning Jacket

July 11, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

My Morning Jacket has reacted to all the recent violence in the news with a new song called "Magic Bullet". Below is what they had to say, regarding the new song:

violence is never the answer.
only love.
we all need to be a part of the discussion.
part of the solution.
how long will it take before we realize-
we are all the same.
this is not idealistic dreaming.
this is a fact-
we all want only to love and be loved.
to nuture and protect those we love.

hate comes from the illusion that we are separate and cut off from
one another by factors like race and religion but this simply is not true.

it does not matter your race/creed/sexual orientation we are all filled with the same beautiful blood- a mix of old and new generations... past present and future...we are all in there somewhere...in the blood lines together...all of humanity.

a beautiful mix of male and female and all the colors rolled up into this wonderful gift we call life.
a gift that should be celebrated like the beautiful rainbow that it is- not riddled by bullets and cut to pieces spilling and wasting that precious blood.

I don't pretend to think that a song can fix or change the world instantly, and I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the political landscape and proper gun control legislation-
BUT if we say nothing then nothing will ever change.
and things have got to change.

so maybe if we all sing out-
if we all speak out- for peace. for equality. for justice. for an end to the violence...then perhaps we can together change the world for the better-
create a world of true peace, love, and acceptance where our differences are celebrated because we realize they are in fact all just shades of the same wondrous human rainbow.

dare to dream. dreams can come true.

no one said it better than Dr. King:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
here is a wish from us to you for peace, love, understanding, and an end to the violence.

we hope you enjoy this song that basically says
there can be a solution...
but none of us can do it alone.
we have to get together.

peace and love,
my morning jacket

Song of the Day: July 10, 2016 - "We Were One" by Plants & Animals

July 10, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Plants & Animals recently released a new video for "We Were One" off their excellent album Waltzed In From The Rumbling.

Director Frédérique Bérubé explained of the video "buried in my computer, old hidden memories. From your childhood, of our island. And of this clear blue water, calm but violent, that was surrounding us. This water that was running across your cheeks when you were young, that used to calm us down and in which we slowly drowned. Those waves are still reflecting the light of our memories.”

July 09, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

One of the big headliners of today's Khatsahlano street party is Mounties, who are taking a quick break from working on their second album to play a free show at the stage on West 4th and Macdonald today!

You can/should catch them, rain or shine, at 7pm (before wishing Khatsahlano had invested in a Tube Transport System to get you all the way to Burrard for Hannah Georgas at 8.)
