Song of the Day: February 14, 2016 - "Long Way Out" by Royal Wood

February 14, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Just in time for Valentine's Day! It doesn't get much more romantic than Royal Wood!

His new album, Ghost Light, is set to be released on April 22nd and the first single, "Long Way Out" is now out!

The video for the song was released last week (see below) as well, and every week he'll be releasing a version of the songs on the album for his Pledge Music Campaign - see THIS for more info.

If this song is any indication of the direction of the album, I'm super excited. Guest artists include Hannah Georgas and Felicity Williams (Bahamas), but Royal Wood performed about 90% of the album himself. Check out this single below.

Song of the Day: February 13, 2016 - "Too Low" by Rosemary Fairweather

February 13, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

A notification popped up on my Facebook the other day informing me that a page I follow changed it's name: from Rosie June to Rosemary Fairweather. This was well timed, because it alerted me that a new song was coming out at the same time!

I had seen Rosie perform on a handful of occasions before and loved her voice and stage presence. In reviews of her work and EP from last fall the comparisons to Grimes were all over the place. While they couldn't be more opposite in persona, I agree that she has more than the potential to see the same success, as her power is in her wonderful songwriting.

Check out the new track "Too Low" below and keep an eye out for her.

Song of the Day: February 12, 2016 - "Vampire" by Mu

February 12, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Vancouver duo Mu has released their sophomore album, II, (appropriate title!) today and we've selected their single "Vampire" as the Song Of The Day.

The band will be performing next week, opening up for Dralms at the Fox Cabaret on February 18th.

Mu description of “Vampire” is that it's “an ode to the ones that vandalize our spirits and dine on the effervescence of thinkers, romantics and creators - to those that cannot dream.”
Keep that in mind while listening below:

3am Playlist #33: SAVVIE & Friends!

February 11, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

SAVVIE it's your birthday! Happy Birthday SAVVIE!

This week's playlist is all too fitting, coinciding with the birthday of Savannah Leigh Wellman (of SAVVIE) and her celebratory show tomorrow (Feb 12) at Guilt & Co.

SAVVIE will be performing along with friends JP Maurice, and Jody Glenham and some more local faces. We asked the birthday girl to put together a list of SAVVIE's friends for this week's list of tunes. Who knows, maybe some of them will be there tomorrow as well! You'll just have to show up and find out.

Click the image above, OR HERE, to have a listen!

Song of the Day: February 11, 2016 - "Swooner" by The Zolas

February 11, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If The Zolas keep releasing songs at this rate, we're gonna hear the whole album before it even comes out!

Just a month ahead of the release of Swooner, we get an aural taste of the title track. Zach Gray says:

"Swooner is about those high-functioning women we all know who somehow manage to be the quarterback of their squad and the best at their job and politically engaged and the most fun person to have real talk with over beers. I don't know how you do it but we salute you.”

Pick up Swooner March 4th on Light Organ Records.

February 10, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

If you didn't pick up the new Jason Collett album this past weekend, maybe this song will convince you.

And not only did Collett release a new video, but he also announced a tour! He'll be joined by Kalle Mattson, and his backing band will be none other than the mighty Zeus. They'll be here in Vancouver at the Fox Cabaret on April 26th, and you can check out the rest of the dates here.

Song of the Day: February 09, 2016 - "Capsized" by Andrew Bird

February 09, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

While he hasn't necessarily been silent since '012's Break it Yourself, it's been a while since the last "proper" album from Andrew Bird. But just the other day he dropped the first single from his new one Are You Serious -- contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills -- due out April 1st.

"Capsized" is a bit more bluesy and soulful than you might expect from Bird, but still manages to feel familiar. I am really interested to hear the rest of the album and see the direction he takes with it.

Song of the Day: February 08, 2016 - "Stay" by Plants & Animals

February 08, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I have been waiting so long for new Plants & Animals, and now we finally have something!

"Stay" is the first single off their new album Waltzed In From The Rumbling, which is out April 29th on Secret City Records, and I am just going to sit here and listen to it on repeat all day.
