Song of the Day: February 07, 2016 - "Sacred Sites" by Well Sister

February 07, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

High fives and bonus points to Dave Thiel from For Esmé for bringing this talented artist to my attention.

Winnipeg musician Jaymie Friesen aka Well Sister released her debut album Sacred Sites in November of 2015, and a video for the title track came out last month.

The ethereal tune is set over scenes of Jaymie cutting her hair and digging into the landscape around her. Check the video out below and the rest of the EP by clicking here.

Song of the Day: February 06, 2016 - "Comes A Time" by Matthew Barber & Jill Barber

February 06, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I can't imagine how proud a parent must be to have one child grow up to be a succesful musician, but two, who made names for themselves independant from one another? That's just amazing.

As is the case for Matthew Barber & Jill Barber, who for the first times in their careers have come together to create an album. The Family Album will be out on April First, and contains a selection of originals and cover songs.

I had a sneak peek and a few of the songs this summer at the Folk Fest, and I am really looking forward to hearing more of how their amazing talents blend.

Song of the Day: February 05, 2016 - "Paradise" by Animalia

February 05, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I stumbled across this song the other day and was immediately drawn in by the dark, cinematic sound of Animalia.

The songwriter is originally from Hobart, Tasmania, but now lives in Toronto, by way of Ireland, and her upcoming album is called (dissonance). She says she wrote the album with "each song focusing on a different element of my relationship with the world around me."
"Paradise", in particular, "was written after what seemed like an endless news stream of young people losing their lives through gun violence."

The album comes out in April on Culvert Music, and I can only hope it is as captivating as this single.

Song of the Day: February 4, 2016 - Smash Boom Pow

February 04, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Smash Boom Pow are performing tonight at the Media Club in Vancouver along with Derrival and Torontonians, Modern Space (fresh off their two performances with Arkells at the Commodore) so we decided to have their song "Regrets" as today's Song Of The Day.

And I'm sure that's what you'll have if you don't check out this show.

The band has a new EP coming in May, so if we're lucky we'll hear some of the new material tonight as well. Check the song out below and be sure to head to the Media Club this evening!

Song of the Day: February 03, 2016 - "Brother's Bothers" by Magnolia

February 03, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

You may know Stephanie Chatman from playing violin with Jasper Sloan Yip, as part of the Four on the Floor String Quartet, or you may have heard her solo EP Compass Rose.

But now Stephanie has released the first song from her brand new project Magnolia, which also features The River and The Road's Andrew Phelan on drums, electric guitar, backing vocals, as well as Marcus Abramzik from Jasper Sloan Yip, The Matinée, and Lydia Hol (among others) on the upright bass.

"Brother's Brothers" is a warm and intimate song, about family (as you may have guessed from the title) and you can hear it below.

Song of the Day: February 02, 2016 - "DVP" by PUP

February 02, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

It's been a hot minute (2 years almost) since PUP released any new music...touring extensively and putting out awesome music videos...but we finally have a new tune.

"DVP" has been performed live by the band since 2014, and now there's a recording of it!
[For those not from Ontario/Toronto, DVP is short for Don Valley Parkway - which is mentioned in the song. Though how someone could ever do 180 on that is beyond me.]

The new album is said to be coming "later this spring", so we'll have to keep our eye out for it (and surely for more tour dates supporting it to follow). Check out "DVP" below:

February 01, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Another full length debut has been announced, this time it's Operators, with their album "Blue Wave", coming out on April 1st (no joke, I hope).

The first single, "Cold Light" premiered recently, and between that, the announcement that Wolf Parade are working on new music, and Operators tour this Spring (Vancouver stop on April 5th at Fortune Sound Club), Dan Boeckner has been busy.

Check it out below!
