Song of the Day: November 25, 2015 - "Tonton Alain Michel" by TOTORRO

November 25, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I almost didn't pick this band for song of the day because my brain kept trying to write TORONTO instead of TOTORRO. I'm bound to mess it up while I'm in France, apologies in advance boys.

The first few bands I started looking into on the Trans Musicales festival artist lineup were all electronic, and I was beginning to get a little worried about what I was walking into. I saw these guys on a list of bands not to miss, and when I started to listen to what became today's Song Of The Day, "Tonton Alain Michel", I actually said "Holy crap!" out loud.

It took me until about halfway through the song to realized there weren't going to be any lyrics, I was that mesmerized by it. Shades of Broken Social Scene's (esp "KC Accidental"), We Are The City, and Aidan Knight for sure. I seriously cannot wait to hear this one live. Listen below:

Song of the Day: November 23, 2015 - "Primitive" by The Katherines

November 23, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

604 Records artist The Katherines have released a new single called "Primitive" from their upcoming album To Bring You My Heart.

The song was was co-written with Steve Bays (Mounties, Hot Hot Heat) and Charlie Kerr (JPNSGRLS), and I'm sure you'll hear the band perform it at a few of the holiday shows in Vancouver, including the Lovecoast Christmas Benefit Dec 11th.

Click below to hear the song, and you can download it from iTunes by clicking here.

Song of the Day: November 22, 2015 - "I Can Swing A Hammer" by The Wet Secrets

November 22, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Everyone's favourite marching-band-uniform-clad Edmontonians The Wet Secrets are back with "I Can Swing A Hammer"! Out on Six Shooter Records, the ridiculously catchy alt-pop song is a tease for the upcoming album, The Tyranny of Objects, due out next Spring.

AND! The band will be performing this song at the  CFL West Final today, complete with the Edmonton Eskimo Cheer Team’s choreographed dance moves. That's gonna be one hell of a half-time show.

Song of the Day: November 20, 2015 - "Trish's Song" by Hey Rosetta!

November 20, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

After an amazing performance here in Vancouver on November 6th with Yukon Blonde, I immediately started wondering when I'd get to see Hey Rosetta! perform again. Lucky for us they released a video for "Trish's Song" which was unexpected. It's best explained in the video details below:

"The video was shot in Villafranca del Bierzo, Spain in September following the band’s appearance at the Evento Sarmiento. Band member Phil Maloney directed the video which features Tim, Mara, Kinley and Josh performing a gorgeous, live off the floor version of “Trish’s Song”.

Says songwriter Tim Baker: “We’d been hesitant to create a video for such an intensely personal piece, and long ago ruled out any sort of narrative ideas. But the ancient, echoey rooms of Europe brought the thought of an intimate performance video to life. This room in particular had such a beautiful feel to it - so rosy and ornate and Spanish and sort of wonderfully feminine. We hope you enjoy it. And go tell your mother you love her. Wherever she is.”"

Check out the beautiful song and video below and if you're in the rest of Canada, check out the schedule for the rest of the tour, including at Massey Hall tonight.

3am Playlist #21: I'm Not Crying - A Peak Performance Project Retrospective

November 19, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

MOMMY! It's OVER!

Has it really been SEVEN years of the Peak Performance Project? Millions of dollars and many lives changed and tonight is the last night of the project.

JP Maurice, Bed Of Stars, and Van Damsel will all take the stage tonight at the Commodore Ballroom and one will win $102,700! (Though I'd also take $50,000 or $75,000 any day!).

I've been along for the ride in different capacities since year one, and watched as bands grew and developed, and am so happy for all of them.

THUS, I have created a playlist today of the Top 3 bands from each year of the finales, and it's quite a mix of sounds. Click the image above, or HERE to take a listen!

I'm not crying...it's just been raining on my face.

Song of the Day: November 19, 2015 - "Goodbye" by JP Maurice & The Wisers

November 19, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

As it is the last Top 3 finale for the Peak Performance Project this evening, I decided a fitting SOTD would be the winning collaboration from the Hello/Goodbye records from bootcamp.

JP Maurice (who is in this year's Top 3) and The Wisers from Alberta's PPP, wrote their song "Goodbye" and took home the honours for songwriting.

You can download ALL of the songs from the theme by clicking here, and be sure you have your ticket for tonight as it's going to be a great party - more info here.
