Song of the Day: November 18, 2015 - "LaLaLaLa" by The Chikitas

November 18, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The second "LALALALA" by The Chikitas started I built a fantasy show in my mind with them, Mobina Galore, and The Pack A.D. Three all girl rock duos? Shut up an take my money!

The Chikitas are from Geneva, and will be part of the Trans Musicales festival I'll be attending next month in France. I was scrolling through the giant list of artists that I hadn't heard of, and the twosome jumped out at me, and I'm glad I clicked.

Check out the track "LALALALA" from their 2014 (amazingly named) album Distoris Clitortion.
Actually, check out the whole album here, it's great.

Song of the Day: November 17, 2015 - "I Mean Something" by Peaches ft. Feist

November 17, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

"Is that Margaret Cho?"
YUP!

Peaches has been releasing videos for each of her songs on her album Rub, and just put out the one for MY favourite track from the album: "I Mean Something".

It's colourful and full of burlesque legends, and is everything you'd expect from a video from Peaches. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: November 16, 2015 - "I Wanna Be Your Man" by Yukon Blonde

November 16, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I've had this song stuck in my head all week, actually since I got the album it earworms it's way in, but after the stellar show by Yukon Blonde (and Hey Rosetta!) on the 6th, it's been there, cheerfully singing its way through my brain.

And now we're got a video for it!

I honestly had NO idea what was going on in it...but luckily the director, Mac Boucher (who did their video for Saturday Night as well) explained it all:
"[The video] playfully makes fun of the male gaze and traditionalism. Satanic symbolism and the de-robing of religious uniform denounces the role of some patriarchal figurehead. The chopping of wood and digging of holes represents violent penetration compared to the rhythmic movements in the peach orchard...it's supposed to be a video that looks beautiful, is edited with humour, and makes absolutely zero sense to the passive observer."

I'd say he nailed it!

Song of the Day: November 13, 2015 - "Show Me How To Move" by The Elwins

November 13, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

This!

The Elwins released a new music video for their song "Show Me How To Move", and it's just the best. Who doesn't love awkward dad dancing (not that my dance moves are much different than this).

Watch/listen below and be sure to come to the Fox Cabaret tonight to see The Elwins live, with Rich Aucoin performing as well.

3am Playlist #20: Knock On Wood

November 12, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

Tomorrow is Friday The 13th, so today's playlist is full of luck (good and bad, and artist-name), superstitions, and even Friday itself.

I'm not sure if you believe in Friday the 13th being bad luck, but I will forever remember the year in middle school where I had an entire fountain pop fall into my lap at lunchtime. And there's nothing worse luck-wise to a teenage than being embarrassed at school.

Tell us your Freaky Friday stories in the comments or on our social media pages, and if you have a good addition to the playlist (click here to listen), let us know as well and we'll add it in.

Avoid those ladders, and don't open your umbrellas inside!

Song of the Day: November 12, 2015 - "All Day" by A Tribe Called Red ft. Kool A.D. & Chippewa Travelers

November 12, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

This will definitely wake you up today and get you out of bed and want to dance even before you have your first hit of caffeine.
A Tribe Called Red has released a new track called "All Day" which features Kool A.D. and Chippewa Travelers, as they gear up to head out on an Australian tour.

They said the song was a summer jam, but missed a NA release, so while we enter into winter, and they're heading towards summer, picture yourself on a beach somewhere while you listen.

Song of the Day: November 11, 2015 - "You Shook Me All Night Long" by Steve'N'Seagulls

November 11, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Once a week, until I leave for France, I'm going to pick a Song Of The Day from some of the bands performing at Trans Musicales in Rennes.

Like I said in my initial announcement, I wanted to see this band based on the name alone, Steve'N'Seagulls, and then I saw what they performed: metal & rock songs, folk-ified.
Who doesn't want to hear "Thunderstruck" performed on a banjo!?

When researching them, I even found a cover they did for the A.V. Club of Beastie Boys' "Sabotage"! But my pick for the SOTD is their cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" because they play hockey against the Finnish Women's team in the video. Check it out:

Song of the Day: November 10, 2015 - "With You" by CAIRO

November 10, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

While CAIRO may be based out of Toronto, lead singer Nate Daniels is actually from Vancouver. It just so happens that their new video for their song "With You" was shot just outside of our fair city, and if you listen to the lyrics he mentions his "first love in British Columbia".

The video and song are beautiful and sad at the same time, and also makes me want to go on a fall roadtrip on a motorcycle.

Check it out below:
