Song of the Day: October 09, 2015 - "The Love Within" by Bloc Party

October 09, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The good news is, Bloc Party has returned from hiatus.

The bad news is, they have returned without bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong.

The good news is, they are teasing their fifth album, with new members Justin Harris (bass, glockenspiel) and Louise Bartle (drums), with a new song called "The Love Within".

The bad news is, their yet-to-be titled album doesn't come out until early 2016.

Song of the Day: October 08, 2015 - "Classy" by Chersea

October 08, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A couple years ago, during a Peak Performance Project showcase, I was introduced to a random musician. I only talked to her for a few minutes, but something about her made me remember to look her up when I got home. And I am sure glad I did.

That musician was Chersea, and the first video I found was a song called "Classy" filmed live at the Alibi Room by our pals at Green Couch. It showcased both her looping talents and her amazing voice, and I was immediately awed.

Two years of hard work later, you can see Chersea on stage at Fortune tonight for her very own Peak Performance Project showcase, alongside Mike Edel and Little India.

(She also has a charity show fundraiser coming up next Tuesday, at Lux Lounge that you can/should check out)

Song of the Day: October 07, 2015 - "Drag Me Down" by Walk Off The Earth ft. Arkells

October 07, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I never would have thought in a million years I'd be putting a One Direction song up as our Song Of The Day, but that time has come.
Can you blame me when it involves the Arkells though, (remember this?), alongside Walk Off The Earth?

Honestly I've never heard the original, and I think I'm going to keep it that way. This one-shot, 10-camera video is pretty cool, and I won't spoil one of the best parts at the end, you'll just have to watch and see.

If you're into covers, be sure to check out JP Maurice's show at the Biltmore tonight called Cover Up For The Planet, which will feature BC artists covering other BC bands songs. Guaranteed good time.

Song Of The Day: October 06, 2015 - "That's Chemistry" by Young Rival

October 06, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Young Rival just released another single titled "That's Chemistry", off of their upcoming album Interior Light. The band has produced another earmworm that will have you swaying in your seat (and hopefully at a venue near you soon - they play the Imperial on November 21st).

The album comes out on the 16th of October, and will be the band's first since 2012. So far the wait has been worth it between this single and, the title track off the album, it's shaping up to be a doozy. Take a listen below.

Song Of The Day: October 04, 2015 - "Land You Love" by Hey Rosetta! and Yukon Blonde

October 04, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

With just over 2 weeks to go until election day, and with advanced voting starting up on Friday, today's Song Of The Day came at a great time.

Written by Tim Baker, performed by both Hey Rosetta! and Yukon Blonde (conveniently on tour together soon), and shot at two different locations, "Land You Love" is about the upcoming election, and our country.

Click here to see the lyrics as a whole.

There have been a LOT of election-related musical events in Vancouver over the last few days, and on Saturday the 10th, there is another one. "Voting #InAdvance" will host bus-based concerts with the likes of Dan Mangan, Shawn from The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, and more, that will shuttle people to advanced voting locations, to cast their votes. - Check out the event by clicking here, and please remember to vote!

Song of the Day: October 03, 2015 - "Got You Well" by Gabrielle Papillon

October 03, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Gabrielle Papillon is one of those artists that I have always been aware of, but never really delved into. But after listening to "Got You Well", that is going to have to change.

It's a haunting song that builds with a chilling intensity, taken from her album The Tempest of Old, which was out earlier this year. Papillon recorded it with producer Daniel Ledwell at Echo Lake studio in Nova Scotia.

Song Of The Day: October 02, 2015 - "Bitter Memories" by Bahamas

October 02, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

One of my favourite albums of 2014 was Bahamas Is Afie (by Bahamas, obviously), and I LOVE the song "Bitter Memories".

Lucky for us, there's a new video out featuring thousands of drawings of Bahamas singing the song. It's quite beautiful and I can only imagine the time and work that went into creating it. Take a look and listen below.
