3am Playlist #15: Cover Up For The Planet

October 01, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

JP Maurice has put together an awesome show that will take place next week on October 7th - Vancouver bands covering Vancouver bands!

The show will benefit Creatively United for the Planet, a "not-for-profit society dedicated to empowering communities and individuals to take better care of the Earth".

The list of musicians performing is impressive, and we asked JP to pick some songs by the bands that will be covered. You'll still have to guess which songs will actually be performed the night-of, as the playlist is just a warm up on the sounds of the night.

Performers include: Head Of the Herd, The Matinee, Bestie, Savvie, Jasper Sloan Yip, The Wild Romantics, Goodwood Atoms, Mindil Beach and others, covering songs by Mother Mother, Yukon Blonde, Gay Nineties, Said The Whale, Black Mountain, Bend Sinister and more!

You can get your tickets online HERE or at the door on the day of, but don't wait, with an all-star roster like this one, it's sure to be a busy night! Click the image above, or HERE to hear the playlist!

Song Of The Day: October 01, 2015 - "Rope of Sand" by Miranda Mulholland

October 01, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I do not know if flame-haired singer/fiddler Miranda Mulholland is a fan of the cancelled-too-soon animated show Clone High or not, but the name "Rope Of Sand" always makes me think of that.

BUT BESIDES THAT, the song is a gorgeous showcase of Miranda's voice, and a love letter to one of her "musical heroes, Kate Bush." It's out on her own label, Roaring Girl Records.

Song Of The Day: September 30, 2015 - "Zzyzx" by Library Voices

September 30, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I yelled "SAXAMAPHONE!" so loud when this song started. I'm already completely obsessed with this track, and am more excited than ever for the new Library Voices album, Lovish, out Nov 6th.

The new song feels like one part Huey Lewis & The News (maybe "Hip To Be Square"?) meets The Romantics' "What I Like About You", but totally Library Voices.

Now to sit patiently for a) the album, b) to hear this live. Click below to enjoy!

September 28, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart have released the video for their song "In Touch" from their, self-titled, collaborative album.

The video features digitally altered video footage from a trip/show in Lebanon, and pairs well with the moody vibes of the song.

Take a listen below!

P.S. Jerusalem In My Heart perform at the Media Club on October 13th.

REGAL is a new collaborative music experiment by some of Vancouver's finest musicians, with members from Dominique Fricot, The Matinee, and The Devin Townsend Project.

They recently released their first EP which you can download now for FREE! The main single is called "Don't Stop" and you can hear it below. Two thumbs up from me!

Song Of The Day: September 24, 2015 - "Hopeful" by Bear Mountain

September 24, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

"Guys! New Bear Mountain! New Bear Mountain!", this was literally my out-loud reaction when I saw the new release from Bear Mountain called "Hopeful".

Needless to say, I've been patiently waiting (aka asking them every time I saw them) for a new release, and the day has finally come. There will be a video for the track soon to follow, and the sophomore release will be in early 2016.

The band says of the song: "We made it thinking about the future, and being hopeful for what's to come despite the past."
I'm thinking there will be a killer album in our future. Listen below:
