Songs of the Week: February 14 - 20, 2022

February 21, 2022 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

“Pretenders” and “Snowy Owl” by Stars

Drop everything, there’s brand new music from Stars! It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Montreal group (unless you subscribe to their Patreon, where they frequently post demos and teases) and now we have not one, but two brand new songs to hype their upcoming album, Capelton Hill.

The pair of tunes encapsulates the band perfectly, with “Pretenders” being a raucous, high energy love letter written from Amy Millan to the rest of the band; and “Snowy Owl” a more tender, acoustic track, with Amy and Torquil Campbell trading off vocals.

Capelton Hill comes out May 27th, or if you want more new music from Amy or Torq, both have been taking personalized commissions(!) on their respective twitter accounts, if you have a spare $1000.

“RIP To Us” by Kelland & Willa

I’ve missed hearing Willa’s voice so much - although I do hear it almost daily with those Rogers commercials - but I was so excited to see she collaborated on a new track with (Vancouver-based artist) Kelland.

“RIP To Us” is a danceable banger of a break-up song, and the two artists compliment each other nicely.
I’d be down for a whole album between these two!

“Parade” by Frontperson

When Frontperson released their debut album in 2018, I was really hoping the collaboration between Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers, Immaculate Machine) and Mark Hamilton (Woodpigeon) (also, no relation) would not be a one-off.

So I was very happy to hear the playful pop-tinged “Parade” last week, and even happier to see it was the first single and title track for a new album!

The album was recorded on Vancouver Island, right near where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were staying, though reportedly "attempts to get some guest vocals proved unsuccessful."

Parade will be out April 29 on Calder's own Oscar St. Records!

“Lights Of The City” by Pink Mountaintops

It’s been eight years (yes, EIGHT) since we’ve had any new music from Pink Mountaintops, and quite frankly I thought about this every time the sunset hit the mountains on the North Shore…
But that all ends now!
”Lights of The City” is the first new track from the band (created by Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean), and the new album, Peacock Pools, is set to be released on May 6th!

If you want to hear from McBean’s brain on what happens in the video below, here you go:
“Lincoln Heights hilltop sunrise riff’n’bang sparks spree of vengeance by disgruntled ex-bass player turned cyborg tinkertronic handsome man, Ken The Walnut.

Obsessed with Pink Mountaintops demise The Walnut’s sinister plot almost succeeds in a Don McClean sized wave of rock’n’roll destruction.

Thankfully, Emily Rose’s Phantom of The Park summoned superpowers save the band group combo and with some collective post-dress rehearsal concert magic the former low frequency fiend is defeated. Let the rock prevail!”

“Stay” by The Bros. Landreth

Last week The Bros. Landreth dropped a brand new single, “Stay”.

The lead single off their upcoming album Come Morning, Joey Landreth says "Stay playfully explores a difficult topic for artists — wanting to settle and put some roots down. Though written from the perspective of a touring musician, anyone who’s looking to shift gears can relate."

Have a listen below, and mark down May 13th for the album’s release.

Song of the Day: November 3, 2018 - "Cause You Did" by WILLA

November 03, 2018 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

WILLA just gave us a new, highly dance-able, break up anthem - and it’s her first new single in a long time!

I really hope this means even more music is coming from this talented girl, and maybe a tour, because I miss having her in Vancouver…lucky Toronto.

Check out “Cause You Did” below!

Song of the Day: March 15, 2016 - "Swan" by WILLA

March 15, 2016 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Ali Milner's pop outfit WILLA has released another single ahead of her debut album Criminals & Dreamers (set for May 6th), titled "Swan".

I've heard her do this one live several times and it's always captivating, and now we have a recording of it!

WILLA is currently in the Toronto/Ontario area for most of March, performing at in and around the city. And hopefully we'll get a music video from her soon as well (I know one is coming because I got to be in the background).

Song of the Day: January 22, 2016 - "Dreamers" by Willa

January 22, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

A little over a year ago, singer-songwriter Ali Milner transformed into the dark synth-pop Willa and released the song "Stay The Night". Now she's back with another brand new single, an anthemic electro-pop ear-worm called "Dreamers".

No word on an album or EP that these are leading up to, but based on the two songs, I am looking forward to hearing what's next.

(Also, while posting this I stumbled across a cover that Willa did of The Cardigan's "Lovefool" that I never knew existed, and now I am so glad it is in my life.)

Song of the Day: December 06, 2015 - "Focus" by P'ARIS

December 06, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The mysterious P'ARIS are back with a heartwrenching new tune. In keeping with their stream of guest vocalists, "Focus" features the powerful pipes of Willa soaring over twitchy synthpop.

And while the duo's secret identities are still known only to a few, they were very open on the song's meaning:

‘Focus' is a song about two people experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. There’s a very particular type of gentle empathy that both partners must offer each other when going through a miscarriage. It’s a strange type of loss, especially from a pragmatic standpoint - you haven't so much lost something as you have lost the idea of something. So in a way you’re mourning the loss of control over your own future, control over your body, your biology. And you’re also faced with the fact that you have failed at the one thing humans exist on earth to do. ‘Focus’ is about making sure the relationship doesn’t suffer while you’re each processing things in your own way

3am Playlist #7: Phil 'Er Up!

August 06, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in 3am Playlist

[CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE PLAYLIST]

Next week (August 12), another cover night hits the Biltmore Cabaret, but this time it will feature the music of Phil Collins and support the wonderful #SingItFwd program.

Performances will feature members of Hey Ocean, Dear Rouge, Bend Sinister, Rococode, Twin Bandit, Star Captains as well as: Jordan Klassen, JP Maurice, Dominique Fricot, WILLA, and Tonye Aganaba.

I've compiled a playlist of music by the artists, so you can start listening and think about which Phil Collins song you'd like to hear them sing.

And I've also done that myself, and asked Kirk and Jess for their ideal pairings as well.
