Songs of the Week: January 26 - February 01, 2026

February 02, 2026 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Not Sorry” by Softcult

Ontario sibling duo Softcult officially released their debut full-length album When A Flower Doesn’t Grow, last week.

I’ve listened to some of the tracks that have been released so far, and with the addition of “Not Sorry” I’m excited to dive into the full album.
Of which the press release tells us that it was “written during a period of personal upheaval and self-discovery, the record traces a path through trauma, disillusionment, empowerment, and eventual liberation. The title itself comes from a quote that struck Mercedes at a pivotal moment: “When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” That perspective threads through the album’s ten tracks, which explore cycles of oppression, abuse, and conformity, while championing the courage it takes to break free.

They will be playing a few headlining shows coming up, before hitting the road in support of LIGHTS. Right now there’s no Vancouver date announced, but there’s a nice little gap in gigs between Calgary and Seattle that hopefully we’ll see filled!

“The Hunt in Edson” by The Rural Alberta Advantage

As they’re about to embark on a quick jaunt through around The States, The Rural Alberta Advantage have dropped a brand new single!

“The Hunt in Edson” is a slow-burn that was inspired by two separate events that happened to singer Nils Edenloff recently, as he elaborates:
“I’m always surprised how the small events in life worm their way into our songs, or even multiple moments that seem unrelated at the time. Several years ago on a beautiful summer morning, my wife woke me up with a jolt when she realized that our cat Edson had brought a mouse into our bed. As surprised as I was, the mouse in Edson’s jaw was even more surprised when it was dropped and hit the bed, having been granted a new lease on life. From there, the mouse scurried up my leg trying to make a break for freedom and ended up behind the bed. The next several minutes involved a comical level chaos between us all, before I managed to trap the mouse and release it back into the yard.
Around the same time, a friend let me know that they had received some life changing news, and opened the conversation with a quote I was unfamiliar with … 'nothing concentrates the mind like a noose around your neck'. Somehow, both of these unrelated events kept popping up in my head as I was working on this song, wondering what the mouse must have thought about his unlikely escape that summer morning and how much it differed from what was going through my own mind in that morning.”

No word yet on their next album, but it’s always exciting to hear new RAA!

“Days Of Our Lives” by Mise En Scene

Winnipeg duo Mise en Scene is back with a brand new single that heralds their next full length album, Drive-Thru Confessional.

“Days Of Our Lives” is a direct & emotional song, as lead vocalist & guitarist Stef Johnson explains it’s “about realizing you have reached a dead end in a relationship. Nothing’s changing, it’s the same arguments over and over, and you ask yourself ‘is this my life now?’ Producing this song was so fun, we knew we wanted to keep the earthy qualities of the acoustic guitar in it, but make it a grunge anthem with some Beatles harmonies.”

The new album was written by Johnson and drummer & vocalist Jodi Dunlop in a remote 100 year old family cabin in Gimli, Manitoba with producer Micah Erenberg, and you can check it out when it drops on March 6th!

“Fabulous” by MEEK

Earworm alert!
I’ve had “Fabulous” by British artist MEEK stuck in my head since the press release landed in my inbox.
The singer is anything but her namesake, and proves the fabulous in the music video for the song.
I listened to the other two tracks she’s released (“Brixton” and “I Want Love, But Not That Much”) and she gives big Chappell Roan meets Adele vibes. She’s one to watch out for in 2026!

Peacelands by My Morning Jacket

Last week, My Morning Jacket announced they were standing alongside the citizens of Minneapolis with the release of an acoustic album, featuring stripped down versions of MMJ and Jim James solo tracks (like “I’m Amazed” and “Here In Spirit”) as well as some covers of iconic songs by Bob Dylan (“Blowin’ In The Wind”), The Velvet Underground (“I Found A Reason”), Brian Wilson (“Love and Mercy”), and more.

All proceeds from Peacelands will benefit nonprofit organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Doctors Without Borders, and the International Rescue Committee.

In Jim James’ own words:

“Peacelands” is a word and concept created by visionary Louisville artist Mark Anthony Mulligan. An imaginary land of peace, friendship, and equality he created in his artwork - a place where folks listen to each other and find a way to get along in peace, friendship, and togetherness - despite their differences.

I think about this word “Peacelands” in our world all of the time, especially in troubled times, and we believe that it’s still possible for us to achieve Mark’s vision of Peacelands - a world of love and friendship - if only we can learn to listen, love, and forgive in paths of peace, acceptance, and tolerance.

We stand with the people of Minnesota and everywhere else affected by the horrors of ICE brutality and lack of human decency or transparency from this administration.

There is room for everyone to be safe and free and at home in this vast world and we need to find a new path together to safe and humane immigration policy and reform rooted in peace and love… safety and equality… and new systems of fairness, freedom, and transparent justice for all.

ALL PROCEEDS from “Peacelands,” an album of mostly unreleased, acoustic peaceful protest songs - some covers and some of my own - that we released today exclusively on Bandcamp, will go to organizations like American Civil Liberties Union fighting for our safety and freedoms here at home, as well as Doctors Without Borders and International Rescue Committee - organizations working hard to help heal the horrors of war and terror around the globe… working around the clock to help move us all towards “Peacelands.”

Artwork artist is unknown and comes from a handmade wood carving I found years ago at a second-hand store in Missoula called Circle Square.

You can grab Peacelands from Bandcamp now, and for an additional directory of activists providing crucial efforts on the ground in Minneapolis and elsewhere, you can visit Stand With Minnesota.

Songs of the Week: January 13 - 19, 2025

January 20, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Keep It Coming” by Two Hours Traffic

Holy crap there’s new Two Hours Traffic!!!

Over a decade ago, the PEI band played what was to be their last concert, and while they have come out of ‘retirement’ and played sporadic shows over the past few years, I was definitely not expecting new music from them.

But last week they dropped “Keep It Coming”, a classic THT jam that will instantly get stuck in your head. According to the band, the song was written during a pretty tough year when ‘keep it coming’ became “a bit of a mantra, as well as a reminder not to worry about every little thing in the future and to trust that you will be able to deal with whatever comes your way,” says guitarist Andy MacDonald, with singer Liam Corcoran adding that the song has “the kind of arrangement we’ve tried to develop over the years, with lots of empty space on the recording and a focus on the groove and the rhythms. Our friend Dan Griffin (Teen Ravine) added keys and synths which ended up being the glue that made the recording really work.”

You can check out the lyric video below, and true to the title, the band has promised more to come!

“I See The Same Things” by Frog Eyes

Vancouver’s Frog Eyes have dropped another new single, “I See The Same Things”, ahead of the release of their upcoming album The Open Up, which is set to come out on March 7th.

Of the song “taps into a central theme for the band of eschewing digital trappings and convenience culture, and when feeling enclosed by an increasingly fever-paced world, they turn toward their reverence for warm tones, historical rich reverie and storytelling art spaces, like The Western Front in Vancouver.”

Guitarist and singer Carey Mercer continues: “The concept for the video is to show Shyla, our keyboard player, digitizing and archiving performance-art pieces that mostly took place on the top floor in the Luxe Hall.  The video then shows us playing in the Luxe Hall.  It’s a conversation, as all art is, with the art of the city that you live in. We are all just doing the same things, day in, day out, it’s how the art gets made, I think.”

“Disco Polo” by Basia Bulat

We’re about a month away from Basia’s Palace, the new album from Basia Bulat, and last week we got our latest taste with the third single, “Disco Polo”.

The gorgeous song is named after a genre of Polish dance music, beloved by Basia’s late father, and honours her parent’s musician influence on her life. Bulat elaborates, “This is an homage to what I feel like is the two sides of my musical lineage–my mother was a classically trained piano and guitar teacher, and my father’s favourite genre was Disco Polo. About the only thing we could all agree on was the oldies radio station that was the peacemaker of our home when I was a child. I wanted to write something that felt like a folk tale about those genres and how they still influence me after all this time–even now every time I sit down at the piano all those different musical worlds swirl around each other and try to dance together in my mind.”

You can check out the fantastic video below, directed by Nora Rosenthal, and pick up Basia’s Palace when it’s out February 21 on Secret City Records.

“Time Waited” by My Morning Jacket

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from Kentucky’s My Morning Jacket, but they recently announced their tenth(!) studio album, along with the brand new single, “Time Wasted”

The new tune is perfectly chill and literally dreamy, as Jim James explains: “I made a loop of that piano intro and listened as I went for a walk, and all these melodies started coming to me. For a long time, I didn’t have lyrics, but then I had a dream where I was in a café and a song was playing, and the lyrics to that song became the lyrics to ‘Time Waited’ – the melodies just fit perfectly. And the lyrics are about how flexible time is, how we can bend and warp time, especially if we are following our hearts, the universe and time itself can flow to work with us.”

The new album, simple titles is, drops on March 21 and you can check out “Time Waited” below!

October 05, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

The members of My Morning Jacket have been pretty busy of late. Not only did they release a new album last year (with the tease of another one coming shortly after), but guitarist Carl Broemel recently put out a solo album, and now there's a new solo album on the horizon for frontman Jim James.

The fierce protest song "Same Old Lie" is the first tease of the album, titled Eternally Even, out November 4th.

Song of the Day: July 11, 2016 - "Magic Bullet" by My Morning Jacket

July 11, 2016 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

My Morning Jacket has reacted to all the recent violence in the news with a new song called "Magic Bullet". Below is what they had to say, regarding the new song:

violence is never the answer.
only love.
we all need to be a part of the discussion.
part of the solution.
how long will it take before we realize-
we are all the same.
this is not idealistic dreaming.
this is a fact-
we all want only to love and be loved.
to nuture and protect those we love.

hate comes from the illusion that we are separate and cut off from
one another by factors like race and religion but this simply is not true.

it does not matter your race/creed/sexual orientation we are all filled with the same beautiful blood- a mix of old and new generations... past present and future...we are all in there somewhere...in the blood lines together...all of humanity.

a beautiful mix of male and female and all the colors rolled up into this wonderful gift we call life.
a gift that should be celebrated like the beautiful rainbow that it is- not riddled by bullets and cut to pieces spilling and wasting that precious blood.

I don't pretend to think that a song can fix or change the world instantly, and I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the political landscape and proper gun control legislation-
BUT if we say nothing then nothing will ever change.
and things have got to change.

so maybe if we all sing out-
if we all speak out- for peace. for equality. for justice. for an end to the violence...then perhaps we can together change the world for the better-
create a world of true peace, love, and acceptance where our differences are celebrated because we realize they are in fact all just shades of the same wondrous human rainbow.

dare to dream. dreams can come true.

no one said it better than Dr. King:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
here is a wish from us to you for peace, love, understanding, and an end to the violence.

we hope you enjoy this song that basically says
there can be a solution...
but none of us can do it alone.
we have to get together.

peace and love,
my morning jacket
